Events for Thursday, March 14, 2013 through Wednesday, March 20, 2013

Here's what's going on this week:
Thursday, March 14

  • Today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wilson Commons Hartnett Gallery on the University of Rochester Campus is a exhibit of Being Here by Janice Jakielski.

Using ceramics, fabric, and paper, Jakielski creates headdresses and wearable appendages that allude to Victorian-era hats and to technological devices that facilitate communication. Jakielski displays these works in colorful, immersive environments, and for the Hartnett Gallery she will be transforming the space into multi-color display room reminiscent of a millinery shop.

  • [Ok, what is it about lunchtime today?] Over at the Eastman House from 12:15 to 1 p.m. in the Curtis Theatre is a Focus 45 Lunch Series with Joe R. Struble.

Daguerreian studios were established in Rochester as early as 1841 and many thrived here at the "lion on the Genesee" until nearly 1860. Thousands of daguerreotype portraits were made here of the wealthy Pioneer families as well as of ordinary citizens of the community. Archivist Joe R. Struble will show slides of many of these notable images, as well the first known photographic image of Rochester, an 1852 full-plate daguerreotype of the corner of Main and State streets.

While driving from Colorado to Los Angeles to deliver his latest manuscript, Sheldon's car careens off the road during a blinding snowstorm. Friday, March 15

  • Tonight at 7 p.m. at the Baobab is a screening and discussion of Ethnic Notions (Marlon Riggs, U.S. 1986, 57 min.)

Loyal Toms, carefree Sambos, faithful Mammies, grinning Coons, savage Brutes, and wide-eyed Pickaninnies roll across the screen in cartoons, feature films, popular songs, minstrel shows, advertisements, folklore, household artifacts, even children's rhymes. These dehumanizing caricatures permeated popular culture from the 1820s to the Civil Rights period and implanted themselves deep in the American psyche.Narration by Esther Rolle and commentary by respected scholars shed light on the origins and devastating consequences of this 150 yearlong parade of bigotry. Ethnic Notions situates each stereotype historically in white society's shifting needs to justify racist oppression from slavery to the present day. The insidious images exacted a devastating toll on black Americans and continue to undermine race relations.

  • The Dryden will screen East of Eden (Elia Kazan, U.S. 1955, 115 min.) tonight at 8 p.m.

John Steinbeck's classic novel (the author himself secretly collaborated on the screenplay) comes to life in this vivid adaptation by the highly influential and equally controversial Elia Kazan. Shot with sweeping widescreen photography on the California coast and introducing American audiences to heartthrob James Dean, this poignant tale of a devout father and the two sons who vie for his love and approval has become one of the most recognizable and beloved films of the 1950s. An incredible achievement of cinematic style, powerful acting, and gripping storytelling, East of Eden is truly an American treasure.

  • The Rochester Community Players and Irish Community Players present Is Life Worth Living? by Lennox Robinson tonight and tomorrow at 8 p.m. at the MuCCC, on Sunday at 2 p.m., and continuing Fridays and Saturdays through March 30.

This 1933 comical farce deals with a small seaside town in Ireland where the locals decide, innocently enough, to switch from their usual annual circus and try theater instead. Serious theater. Heavy serious theater. Strindberg. Tolstoy. Checkov. Stuff that would make even a cheeky Irishman question if life is, well, worth living.
