In Gavett Hall #301 on the UofR Campus, Padmini Das will present a lecture on Science and Sustainability titled Is There Any Sustainable Solution for Lead Contamination?.

Padmini Das, Assistant Professor of Biology at Nazareth College, will address the status of situ remediation techniques to remove lead from the environment. Lead is ranked second in a list of national priority pollutants because of its widespread distribution throughout the nation, environmental persistence, and its potent toxicity especially to the children under the age of six. Ex situ clean up measures, which were practiced extensively over the last few decades, were mostly expensive and ecologically disruptive. More sustainable in situ remediation alternatives like chemical immobilization and phytoremediation are in the process of development and testing in the laboratory and field.
