North Country screening
2018-Nov-03 @ 19:30 - 21:36
The Dryden will screen North Country (Niki Caro, U.S. 2005, 126 min., 35mm) as part of the Labor Film Series.
"Sexual harassment will not be tolerated, but will be graded." These words appeared on signs posted around a Minnesota iron ore processing plant after the state asked plant management to develop a sexual harassment policy. Escalating harassment eventually led to the first class-action sexual harassment lawsuit in the United States, brought against the Eveleth mining company by women workers, members of the United Steelworkers' union. A fictionalized narrative inspired by these events, North Country vividly depicts workplace harassment and women's responses on the job, in the union, and in the courtroom. Strong performances by Charlize Theron, Frances McDormand, Sissy Spacek, and Woody Harrelson anchor the film. The soundtrack features songs by Minnesota's own Bob Dylan.
