Crossing Delancey screening
2019-Jan-06 @ 19:00 - 20:37
The Dryden will screen Crossing Delancey (Joan Micklin Silver, U.S. 1988, 97 min., 35mm) as part of the L'chaim: Celebrating Jewish Life series.
Izzy Grossman (Amy Irving) is a sophisticated, single New Yorker who has left behind the "old ways" of her Jewish heritage. Working at a Manhattan bookshop where she organizes prestigious author readings, she revels in the society of the intelligentsia and literati who are drawn there. Izzy isn't looking for love, but she does have her eye on a celebrated Dutch writer named Anton (Jeroen Krabbé). Her Upper West Side adult life clashes with her Lower East Side upbringing, however, when her grandmother (Reizl Bozyk) enlists a matchmaker to set her up with the man who runs the pickle shop, Sam Posner (Peter Riegert). Crossing Delancey not only portrays the tension between modernity and tradition, but also paints a rich picture of New York in all its diverse splendor in the late 1980s.
