Broadway Love screening
2016-Mar-08 @ 20:00 - 21:06
The Dryden will screen Broadway Love (Ida May Park, U.S. 1918, 66 min., 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli.
The American film industry had a number of women directors active before the First World War, and perhaps surprisingly, most of them eventually worked for the most prolific of all American film studios, Universal. One of the most determined figures at Universal City, Ida May Park directed 14 features and wrote 48 screenplays for them between 1917 and 1920. She both wrote and directed this racy country-to-footlights tale for four of Universal's then-biggest stars: Juanita Hansen, adventurous Dorothy Phillips, chisel-featured William Stowell, and the rapidly rising Lon Chaney before he acquired all his thousand faces. It is the Eastman Museum's privilege to honor the International Women's Day by showing this extremely rare and entertaining survivor of Park's output in a recent restoration from our Moving Image Department.
