Events in Rochester, NY for Thursday, November 20, 2014 through Wednesday, November 26, 2014

Here's my selection of events in Rochester this week:
Thursday, November 20

  • Updated: Today at 12 p.m. at Savers (1175 Marketplace Dr., Henrietta) is a Rally in support of workers right to organize without retaliation (dress warm!)

Metro Justice has been called on to lend some solidarity to a local worker fired as she engaged in union organizing! Savers workers across the nation have been organizing to join the United Food and Commercial Workers. One of those workers was recently fired and is in need of your support. As we organize around the Fight for 15 with fast food workers, we know that workers often face illegal retaliation for their efforts to improve their lives and those of their families. We can't sit by and let this sort of retaliation go by unnoticed. Corporate bosses need to know that workers have each others' backs in Rochester.

He has done much underwater photography, including helping with Kodak's underwater Colorama. He began making underwater housings for cameras in 1954. Milt also helped photograph Lake Champlain's sunken horse-powered ferry boat in the 1980s. His company, Slide World Associates, produced audio-visual productions for companies and individuals around the world. His collection of about 80 different cameras includes 50 Kodak models dating back to the 1890s.

  • The Dryden will screen Expedition to the End of the World (Daniel Dencik, Denmark/Sweden/Greenland 2013, 90 min., DCP) tonight at 8 p.m.

Our passion for adventure, exploration, and knowledge has not diminished in the 21st century. The group of artists and scientists who set sail on a three-mast schooner prove that discovery of the natural world is still an awe-inspiring experience. Their destination is Northeast Greenland to study and observe the rapidly melting massifs of that region. This expansive and ravishing northern wilderness causes the crew to both lose and find themselves in what has been described as a magnificent documentary about the meaning of life.

If you like Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Social Distortion or Evel Knievel, you'll be eating up Brunett with two giant spoons.

Considered Hou Hsiao-hsien's masterpiece, The Puppetmaster tells the true story of Taiwanese puppeteer and actor Li Tien-lu. Alternating between scenes from Li's life and Li speaking directly into the camera, the film graciously follows him and his battles with the Japanese forces as they attempt to compromise his art for the sake of propaganda. This exploration of life and art and their complex, intertwining connections won the Jury Prize at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.

There may be a logical order to nature, but that doesn't stop one bighearted orphaned pig from aspiring to higher things—like herding sheep. Humans take a backseat in this delightful adaptation of Dick King-Smith's The Sheep-Pig, as barnyard animals converse with each other and tell tales about the "Boss," played by the endearing James Cromwell. The exceptional voice work and blending of live and animated critters are bookended by the impeccable narration of the late, great Roscoe Lee Browne.

Voices Across the Divide follows her personal journey as she begins to understand the Palestinian narrative while exploring the Palestinian experience of loss, occupation, statelessness, and immigration to the U.S. The documentary is both a personal journey to understand the Palestinian narrative as well as the implications and contradictions of deeply held cultural beliefs in the Jewish community.

Then there is the secretary herself, returning to work after a major family crisis. What happens when two lost souls collide in the same room? Aspie Works founder Justin Rielly revisits his one-act drama, first presented last summer.

By interviewing family members, close friends, and mentors, we learn about his transformation from a joyous childhood to the moment he realized the severity of his family's financial problems, and how their struggles changed his outlook on his own life.

  • Tonight at 8 p.m., the Dryden will screen Molly O' (F. Richard Jones, U.S. 1921, 80 min., 35mm), and Should Men Walk Home? (Leo Mccarey, U.S. 1927, 20 min., 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip Carli.

Mabel Normand, the first world-famous screen comedienne, achieved fame as a star and director working for Mack Sennett. Molly O', Normand's best feature film, stars her as an Irish washerwoman's daughter whose inadvertent love for a millionaire is disrupted by her disapproving working-class parents. Normand returned to short films later in the 1920s as a society thief in the delightful Should Men Walk Home?, where she partners Creighton Hale in confusing the living daylights out of Oliver Hardy.

Wednesday, November 26

  • The Dryden will screen The Grapes of Wrath (John Ford, U.S. 1940, 129 min., 35mm) tonight at 8 p.m.

Ford's adaption of John Steinbeck's dustbowl classic remains one of the filmmaker's most admired movies, and it was one of the first films selected for the National Film Registry. Fonda's portrayal of Tom Joad is among the actor's most iconic roles, and John Carradine and Oscar-winner Jane Darwell are also memorable. The liberal leanings of the film thwart efforts to assume Ford's politics were purely conservative. Can there be a more fitting film for Thanksgiving eve?

  • Linda Rutherford & Celtic Fire perform a reunion show titled The Power Will Be On with 3 Mile starting around 8:30 p.m. at The California Brew Haus (402 W. Ridge Rd.)

After 11 long years, we were within minutes of taking the stage on 09/05/14 when a transformer went out and took with it the lights, power and a lot of smiles. All beyond our control, but we felt terrible for all our fans who came out in droves from far and near, so we decided the reunion must and Will Go On. At the same time, we'd like to try and raise some money for the family of recently slain Rochester Police Officer Daryl Pierson. A portion of the proceeds will go to his family, and donations can be made directly to the family when purchasing advance tickets.

  1. Lol. I love your comment about SORCERER and your commitment to film. Warners did a new restoration of the film with the help of director William Friedkin, and the studios don't do films anymore for their restorations. Just DCP. So, if you want to play the new restoration, you have to show it digitally. The film is still out there and being kept safe, so you have the option.
Thanks for the site, Jason. I always check on Thursdays, especially to see if any authors are coming to town…
