Scrooge screening (2019-Dec-20 @ 7:30 p.m.)
2019-Dec-20 @ 19:30 - 20:56
The Dryden will screen Scrooge (Brian Desmond Hurst, U.K. 1951, 86 min., 35mm) as part of the Holidays, and Canon series.
No holiday season would be complete without an adaptation of Charles Dickens's yuletide classic, and this is one of the best (released in the United States simply as A Christmas Carol). Alastair Sim's portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge is often cited as the quintessential, even nearly seventy years later. Though readily available on many inferior 16mm prints, VHS, and DVD (both black-and-white and colorized), this title is hard to find in a good 35mm print. Closely hewing to the original text, the film follows nineteenth-century miser Scrooge as he has a change of heart over Christmas Eve, having been visited by the Spirits of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come.
