- The Dryden will screen It's a Great Feeling (David Butler, U.S. 1949, 85 min., 35mm) tonight at 8 p.m.
There is no blueprint for breaking into the movie business. Katharine Hepburn attributed her success to good luck and knowing the right people. It's a Great Feeling is an insider's look at what it takes to get ahead in Hollywood, done with great panache and good humor by the extraordinary actors at Warner Bros. in 1949. Doris Day is a natural in her third screen appearance as the lucky young hopeful who gets the break of a lifetime. Watch for cameos by some of Hollywood's greatest stars: Joan Crawford, Errol Flynn, Gary Cooper, Dennis Morgan, Jack Carson . . . but you get the picture!

- Polite Ink Sketch and Improv presents Shaken Not Stirred at the Rochester Association of Performing Arts (RAPA, 727 East Main St.) tonight from 8 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. [source: City Newspaper events calendar, 2014-Sep-8]
- At 8 p.m., the Dryden will screen the very good, eye-opening documentary Workingman's Death (Michael Glawogger, Germany/Austria 2005, 122 min., 35mm).
One of the most memorable labor films we've screened, Glawogger's documentary commemorates the significance of heavy manual labor and its cost in human life. The film's segments on Ukrainian coal miners, Indonesian sulphur miners, Nigerian slaughterhouse workers, Pakistani ship-breakers, and Chinese steelworkers, like the photographs of Sebastião Salgado, both celebrate and lament the labor it depicts. The film throws into question claims about the possibility of a world without work and underscores issues of occupational health and safety. With Glawogger's unexpected death in April, we have lost an astute observer of the globalization of labor.

- The Little will screen Surf Nazis Must Die (Peter George, U.S. 1987, 83 min.) tonight at 9:30 p.m. in conjunction with the release of the score to the film by Strange Disc Records, a new label in Rochester.
Sometimes, it's time to call a spade a spade. This movie is not a good movie. In fact, it's awful. But it fits into that special class of films that are so poorly done that they are fantastically entertaining to watch. We regret nothing. When the grandson of a gun wielding woman is murdered by neo-nazi surf punks in the post-apocalyptic future, this grandma hunts them down for some bloodthirsty revenge.

- The Dryden will screen Borgman (Alex van Warmerdam, The Netherlands/Belgium/Denmark 2013, 113 min., English and Dutch w/ subtitles, DCP) tonight at 8 p.m.
There is something rotten in Holland! The first Dutch candidate to the Palme d'or at Cannes in the last forty years is a beautifully dark fairy tale, reminiscent—but not at all derivative—of David Lynch (Lost Highway), Lars von Trier (The Kingdom), and Luis Buñuel (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie). It has the pulse of a genuine vampire cult thriller, but has no traditional bloodsuckers, nor gory violence; it has a touch of Haneke's Funny Games, but is imbued with an appropriate dose of nasty humor; it has plenty of genuine suspense, but offers no easy solution to its mysteries—you'll be scared, without really knowing why. The bad guys are gentle. The good guys are ugly. You do the rest.

Bob Hoskins was a most unconventional leading man. But, he proved to be a genius at creating characters who could beguile, charm, and tug at your heartstrings without having standard movie-star handsome looks. He was simply a great, in-the-moment actor. To remember Bob Hoskins and his forty-year career, we present two of his most memorable performances that amply display his amazing versatility. In Mrs. Henderson Presents, Hoskins stars as theatre impresario Vivian Van Damm who guides the plucky Mrs. Henderson (Judi Dench) to surprising success in London's West End theatre world. Next, Hoskins stars as the tough but tender George, fresh out of prison and confronted with a world of new trouble in Mona Lisa. He deservedly won top acting honors for this role at Cannes, the BAFTA awards, and the Golden Globes, and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

- The Dryden will screen While New York Sleeps (Charles Brabin, U.S. 1920, 92 min., 35mm) tonight at 8 p.m.
One of the first "portmanteau" films (featuring several stories around a central theme, like Plaza Suite and Dead of Night), While New York Sleeps is also one of the earliest and best films set in and filmed on location in New York City. Three tales—one romantic, one ironic, and one highly dramatic—unfold during one Manhattan night, each with the same stars (Estelle Taylor and Marc McDermott) playing different roles. Glimpses of the Ziegfeld "Midnight Frolic" and an extended chase sequence on the East River highlight this fascinating and entertaining look into a vanished Gotham.

- Today at 2 p.m. and tonight at 7 p.m., the Church of the Assumption (20 East Ave., Fairport) will screen Disruption (Pamela Yates, U.S. / Peru / Colombia / Brazil 2014, 85 min.)
There's no replacement for masses of people standing shoulder to shoulder to demand change. Have you ever felt that energy? If you're looking for hope, there's nothing like it. But we can capture a little bit of that magic with a movie — and now the People's Climate March has one! Here's the brand-new trailer for Disruption, a movie for the climate movement that we're hoping will galvanize a new wave of climate action and climate leadership this fall: Disruption will be released for free online on September 7 — and on that day there will also be independent screenings and house parties around the country to watch the movie in groups.

- The Dryden will screen Charlie Wilson's War (Mike Nichols, U.S. / Germany 2007, 102 min., 35mm) tonight at 8 p.m.
Director Mike Nichols and writer Aaron Sorkin put a smart, zesty spin on the stranger-than-fiction true story of Charlie Wilson (played with great aplomb by Tom Hanks), a hard-partying playboy congressman from Texas who attempts to take down the Ussr through the covert funding of Afghan rebels. But Wilson can't do it alone, and his plan has him cozying up to a pair of strange bedfellows: a nutty right-wing socialite (Julia Roberts), who also happens to be the sixth richest woman in Texas, and a rogue Cia operative (a marvelously shady Philip Seymour Hoffman) who has thrown out the Agency rule book and written his own.
