Thursday, July 4

• Today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is a Restore the Fourth Amendment Rally starting at Washington Square Park and continuing to the Federal Building.
  

  Concerned citizens and real patriots will meet at Washington Square Park and march to the Rochester Federal Building on July 4th, 2013 to demonstrate their contempt for the federal government's surveillance programs. The recent leak of the NSA's request for millions of Americans cell phone data, the discovery of the PRISM program, and countless other abuses proves that the government is violating our rights on a daily basis in the name of fighting terrorism. We know that true patriotism is resisting tyranny even when its inconvenient not caving to tyranny for the illusion of safety.

• Tonight at 7 p.m., the Dryden will screen Willie Nelson's 4th of July Celebration (Yabo Yablonsky, Us 1979, 100 min., 35mm).
  

  While Woodstock is the quintessential counter-cultural concert film of the peace and love generation, Yablonsky's document of Willie Nelson's second annual "picnic" offers a far-out view of a different sort of hippie culture. Mesmerizing and tranquil, this seldom-screened film of the three-day concert that drew 25,000 people captures the sun-soaked, beer-drenched, smoky affair with candor and admiration for the audience and the performers. Deemed a "national treasure" by the Library of Congress, the film features footage of greats such as Leon Russell, Waylon Jennings, and Doug Kershaw, among others.

  There are many things that beggar belief in drive-in cinema, and The Giant Claw represents nearly all of them: a ridiculous, semi-mobile puppet monster; actors who can barely maintain a straight face while delivering goofball dialogue; and special effects that are not so much employed as avoided altogether. A film so absurd it feels like a postmodern parody of itself, The Giant Claw is the tale of a—wait for it—giant turkey from outer space that comes to Earth to terrorize humankind. Perhaps the most unbelievable part? A 35mm print exists, and we'll be screening it!

• The Cinema's 9 p.m. film this week is Fast and Furious 6 (Justin Lin, U.S. 2013, 130 min.) In case you don't want to just see cartoonish car chases, here's the elaborate plot summary to fill you in on the prior films in the series:
  

  Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of all-stars as the global blockbuster franchise built on speed races to its next continent in Fast and Furious 6. Reuniting for their most high-stakes adventure yet, fan favorites Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and Elsa Pataky are joined by badass series newcomers Luke Evans and Gina Carano. Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian's (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin's empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete. Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again. Building on the worldwide blockbuster success of Fast Five and taking the action, stunts and narrative to even greater heights, Fast and Furious 6 sees director Justin Lin back behind the camera for the fourth time. He is supported by longtime producers Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel, who welcome producer Clayton Townsend back to the series.

  Immerse yourself in the stages of a fashion collection with an ideal setting of projected video and dark music spun by some of Rochester's best DJs. Local fashion designer Katrina Elliott will be showing muslin "rough draft" samples of a science fiction inspired runway collection.

• Later tonight at Writers and Books — starting after dark around 9:30 p.m. — is the First Festival of Sound and Light.
  

  Beginning in the fall of 1915, with an event that took place in Highland Park, Rochester Architect Claude Bragdon dramatically transformed his architectural work by designing theatrical events and settings, which he called Festivals of Light and Song. These projects were staged throughout New York State, including Rochester, Buffalo, and New York City. These night-time events were transformative experiences for the participants, caught up by music and lights that embraced them as they moved through previously familiar parks, transfixing the participants as if they occupied a wholly new world. A festival in New York City's Central Park attracted crowds of over 60,000. Drawing upon this past, Writers and Books will be staging a rebirth of the Festival of Light and Song. This initial event, will take place on Friday, July 5, at 9:30 p.m. at Writers and Books. with images projected on the façade of our, quite fittingly, Claude Bragdon-designed building at 740 University Avenue. This first show will be a tribute to Claude Bragdon, involving his images, words, and a selection of music he used in his own Festival events a century ago.

  Although Harold Lloyd enjoyed great popularity in the 1920s, his legacy as a master of silent comedy is often eclipsed by his more recognizable contemporaries. An immensely involved actor and producer, Lloyd presented some of the most artfully executed sequences in all of silent cinema. In his most celebrated effort, Lloyd stars as "The Boy" who sets off to find success in the big city but instead finds only trouble. His madcap adventures culminate in a now-iconic climb up a clock tower, a testament to Lloyd's physical and cinematic talents. Join us for the screening of this new restoration from Janus Films, with a new score by famed composer Carl Davis.

  Please join NOFA-NY for a workshop entitled Scaling Up the Beginning Farm with Innovation and Appropriate Technology with a potluck to follow. On-farm equipment hacks and energy efficiency are effective strategies to increase output and scale up the farm, but how does the smart farmer prioritize projects and maintain a low cost for making such improvements? At Juniper Hill Farm, the answer has been a mixture of DIY ingenuity to hone just the right infrastructure and tools, along with taking advantage of incentives and grants to implement the costlier infrastructure needed to run the farm well.

• Tonight at 7 p.m. at the Little is a screening of One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das (Jeremy Frindel, U.S./India 2012, 74 min.) as part of the One Take Doc Series. The screening will be followed by a Skype discussion with director Jeremy Frindel.
  

  The film tells the story of young musician Jeffrey Kagel, who walked away from the American dream of rock 'n' roll stardom, turning down the lead singer slot in the band that would become Blue Oyster Cult. He sold all his possessions and moved from the suburbs of New York to the foothills of the Himalayas in search of happiness and a little-known saint named Neem Karoli Baba (or Maharajji).

• At 8 p.m., the Dryden will screen Jazz on a Summer's Day (Aram Avakian, Bert Stern, U.S. 1959, 85 min., 35mm). (Note that this is Member's Movie Night, so Eastman House members are admitted free.)
  

  Jazz comes out of dark clubs and into the sun in this compelling documentary on the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. Billed as "embarrassingly intimate," the film captures the thriving spirit of this truly American art form. Featuring extended performances by jazz giants Thelonious Monk, Sonny Stitt, Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, and more, Aram Avakian and Bert Stern's document belongs next to Woodstock, Monterey Pop, and The Last Waltz as one of the great concert films.

  In one of his best performances, Henry Fonda plays the titular lawyer who would become president. The story follows Lincoln from his Kentucky home and young love, Ann Rutledge, to his legal practice in Illinois, where he defends two brothers on trial for murder. Part courtroom drama, part historical romance, the film explores how one of our greatest leaders was molded. Released in the "Greatest Year in Movie History," the film was also a high point for Ford, who released Stagecoach and Drums Along the Mohawk the same year.
