Producer\/director Kevin Costner plays a Union officer during the Civil War who comes to earn the trust and respect of the Sioux, his dark outlook invigorated by their rich culture and down-to-earth lifestyle. The film was a critical darling, winning seven Oscars and netting Best Director honors for Costner.
