{"id":487,"date":"2009-12-05T20:00:43","date_gmt":"2009-12-06T00:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayceland.com\/blog\/?p=487"},"modified":"2009-12-09T17:15:52","modified_gmt":"2009-12-09T21:15:52","slug":"house-and-living-organics-at-the-dryden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayceland.com\/blog\/archive\/2009\/12\/05\/house-and-living-organics-at-the-dryden\/","title":{"rendered":"House and Living Organics at the Dryden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I headed over to the <strong>Dryden Theater<\/strong> at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastmanhouse.org\/\">George Eastman House<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=900+East+Ave,+Rochester,+NY&amp;ll=43.15138,-77.58015&amp;spn=.01,.02&amp;hl=en\">900 East Ave.<\/a>) to catch the films screened there.  Starting out was a short film called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1553685\/\">Living Organics<\/a><\/strong> which was a series of animated, abstract vignettes depicting how modern culture works to remove humanity from the living world it is part of.  It was fitting introductory piece to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0076162\/\">Hausu<\/a> <em>(House)<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There really is no way to explain what happens in the movie.  It's rooted in a nightmare horror scenario where members of a party disappear one at a time.  Its execution &#8230; well, that's another story.  My friend Albert commented afterward that it was very dreamlike &mdash; so perfectly so, in some ways, that we were having a hard time remembering the events that transpired.  It's supremely bizarre narrative.  I guess it makes a little more sense from a Japanese perspective, as there are some cultural references &mdash; but even then, it's dominated so much by this dreamy nightmare motif that it's really hard to explain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I headed over to the Dryden Theater at George Eastman House (900 East Ave.) to catch the films screened there.
