SUMMARY:Signal No Signal: Videos from VSW
DESCRIPTION:Signal No Signal is an act of rescuing visions and voices from fragile archived media. It is a survey of wild\, difficult\, and honest experiments in narrative and form found in the videos of the Visual Studies Workshop Film/Video Collection. These videos — spanning 1972-2003 — have been curated and digitized by filmmakers Mary Lewandowski and Nilson Carroll as part of an initiative to shed light on and breathe life into VSW's unique magnetic media collection. Stranded on magnet frequencies of VHS and Umatic tape\, these fervent documents of highly personal commentary\, ritual editing\, and technological exploration are reanimated tonight. \n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2019-Feb-18]

The film follows the story of the crew from sea to land as Ensign Keith and Lieutenant Maryk (Van Johnson) are tried for mutiny by a court-martial. Based on Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize—winning novel\, The Caine Mutiny received seven Oscar nominations\, including for Best Picture and Best Actor (Bogart). \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-18]

SUMMARY:Doctor Zhivago screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Doctor Zhivago (David Lean\, U.S./Italy/U.K. 1965\, 197 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Oscar Week series and theWinter Romance series. \nAn epic romance of doomed love\, Doctor Zhivago is set amidst the tumultuous years encompassing World War I\, the Russian Revolution of 1917\, and the Russian Civil War. Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif) is a married physician and poet who falls madly in love with Lara (Julie Christie)\, a nurse who is also married. The tangled epic of love and war "did nothing less than re-create Moscow and its countryside\," according to Roger Ebert. "Doctor Zhivago\," Ebert continues\, "believes that history should have a lot of room for personal feelings . . . the individual over the state\, the heart over the mind." Banned in the Soviet Union for decades\, Doctor Zhivago won five of the ten Academy Awards for which it was nominated and has continued to garner acclaim ever since. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-18]

SUMMARY:Sim Redmond Band musical performance
DESCRIPTION:The Lovin' Cup will host the Sim Redmond Band (whom I first saw at the Krown almost exactly 17 years ago) and liked enough to keep going to their shows for some time. \nSince their inception almost 20 years ago\, the Sim Redmond Band has been steadily on the rise\, forging new ground in roots music. Traveling around the globe\, playing with the likes of moe.\, the Neville Brothers\, the Wailers\, Jimmy Cliff\, and Habib Koite\, in some of the most beautiful venues in the U.S. and Japan\, the world has taken notice. With 8 tours of Japan under their belt\, Srb's unique blend of roots-rock\, Afro-Carribean\, and reggae music continues to spread like wild fire. \nThey are based in Ithaca\, NY but their magnetic pole is Africa\, particularly the sounds eminating from West and South Africa. This magnetic pole has served as a pivot for the Sim Redmond Band to spring into straight rock grooves and pumping reggae. The vocal teamwork of Sim Redmond\, Jen Middaugh\, and Nate Silas Richardson creates some of the richest harmonies you'll ever hear. \n\n [source: Lovin Cup website\, 2019-Feb-18]

SUMMARY:Mostly Other People Do The Killing musical performance (2019-Feb-23 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:It's hard to believe that Mostly Other People Do The Killing (henceforth referred to as MOPDtK) have been together since 2003 and have been releasing recordings since 2005. (a dozen at last count.) Starting as a quartet (leader Moppa Elliott – bass\, John Irabagon – reeds\, Peter Evans – trumpet and Kevin Shea – drums) they've been through several personnel shifts\, occasionally adding members. At one point they were up to a septet. But no matter the size\, the band has always maintained its distinct freewheeling approach\, high level musicianship\, complex yet accessible compositions and musical antics that have made them so popular. \nWe are pleased to be able to bring MOPDtK back to Bop Shop Records\, something we have been wanting to do for several years. Elliott is bringing a unique edition. This will feature MOPDtK as a piano trio featuring new pianist Ron Stabinsky. On record\, Stabinsky made his first appearance on Blue\, the band's notorious "reworking" of Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue recording. Stabinsky subsequently replaced trumpeter Evans on their most recent record\, Mauch Chaunk. Stabinsky has also recently released his first solo piano record\, the ironically titled Free For One. It's a bracing set of free improvisations that's been well-received. We also have to mention bassist Moppa Elliott's recent solo bass release\, Still\, Up In The Air which has also received favorable reviews. \n\n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2019-Feb-18]
