DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen High Society (Charles Walters\, U.S. 1956\, 107 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Parties series. \nIce-cold heiress Tracy Lord's (Grace Kelly) attempts to remarry are thwarted by her musician ex-husband Dex (Bing Crosby) and Mike Connor (Frank Sinatra)\, a reporter covering the wedding. This musical remake of The Philadelphia Story in CinemaScope and color has a sparkling cast and a Cole Porter score to die for that includes "Did You Evah?" SUMMARY:Sarah Shook and The Disarmers musical performance
DESCRIPTION:When Sidelong\, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers' debut album\, was released in early 2017\, it quickly earned kudos for its blast of fresh\, fierce honesty and sly wit. It was a welcome new voice in a genre too often mired in the staid and conventional. And while that record may have come to many as a surprise\, their new CD Years solidifies the point: Sarah Shook and the Disarmers have moved from getting people's attention to commanding it. The album—with its sharpened songwriting\, unique perspective\, deepened sound and roll-up-your-sleeves attitude—will grab you by the collar and put a defiant finger to your chest. It is resolute\, blunt\, and unflinching. \n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2018-Aug-13]

SUMMARY:Introduction to Home and Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:This introductory course will teach about systemic factors that lead to chronic displacement and homelessness in our community and its intersection between race\, class\, gender\, and other urban factors. Students will unpack the concept of home and actions we can take to push city leaders to change policies that affect what is considered a dwelling and where we should be able to live. What actions can we collectively and individually take to end this community epidemic. Let's talk about it! \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-Aug-13]

SUMMARY:Our Dancing Daughters screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Our Dancing Daughters (Harry Beaumont\, U.S. 1928\, 83 min.\, 16mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Parties series. \nJoan Crawford's whirlwind performance in this film (her first major role) now seems the epitome of Bright Young Things of the Jazz Age—bootleg hooch\, good lovin'\, and dancing\, dancing\, dancing without a thought for tomorrow. Our Dancing Daughters is not only a reflection of the Roaring Twenties\, but a kind of unconscious valedictory to the period\, shifting from wild parties to remorseful melodrama in a way that foreshadows the effects of the impending stock market crash of 1929 upon American society. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-13]

SUMMARY:Izgnanie (The Banishment) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Izgnanie (The Banishment\, Andrey Zvyagintsev\, Russia 2007\, 150 min.\, DCP\, Russian w/subtitles) as part of the Andrey Zvyagintsev series. \nMuch like Zvyagintsev's critically acclaimed debut The Return\, the director's second feature investigates bonds of family\, this time tackling the relationship between a husband and wife. A trip to the pastoral countryside reveals a dark\, sinister reality for a family from the city. Eschewing easy answers and tackling a wide array of themes\, The Banishment poetically renders the persistent human state of exile from our surroundings. Based on the novel The Laughing Matter by William Saroyan. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-13]

SUMMARY:My Darling Clementine screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen My Darling Clementine (John Ford\, U.S. 1946\, 97 min.\, 35mm) as part of the War\, Myth\, Desire series. \nJohn Ford told of knowing Wyatt Earp in his early days in Hollywood\, and yet\, when it came time to tell the story of Earp's shining moment at the O.K. Corral\, Ford chose to take liberty with the story. Remember\, this filmmaker later had a character say\, "When the legend becomes fact\, print the legend." The results are fabulous; this is one of Ford's most lyrical and evocative films\, a Henry Fonda gem\, and one of the very finest westerns in the history of this popular genre. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-20]

SUMMARY:I Am Not Famous Anymore: Erin Dorney Reading
DESCRIPTION:Erin Dorney's writing has been featured in Day One\, Passages North\, Bone Bouquet\, Juked\, Hobart\, Paper Darts\, The Found Poetry Review\, The Pinch\, Painted Bride Quarterly\, and Birdfeast\, among other publications. Her debut collection of poetry\, I Am Not Famous Anymore: Poems After Shia Labeouf\, is out now from Mason Jar Press. "When at its best\, the art of the erasure is not the simple removal of language\, but the work of finding the threads resting underneath what already exists. In I Am Not Famous Anymore\, Erin Dorney is both puzzle-maker and puzzle-solver\, chipping away at Shia Labeouf and making something newer\, and more glistening." —Hanif Abdurraqib\, author of They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us \n [source: Writers and Books website\, 2018-Aug-20]

SUMMARY:Bedoune Tarikh\, Bedoune Emza (No Date\, No Signature) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Bedoune Tarikh\, Bedoune Emza (No Date\, No Signature\, Vahid Jalilvand\, Iran 2017\, 104 min.\, DCP\, Persian w/subtitles). \nThe forensic pathologist Dr. Nariman (Amir Aghaee) has a car accident with a motorcyclist and injures the motorcyclist's 8-year-old son. Dr. Nariman offers to take the child to a clinic nearby\, but the father refuses help and money. A few days later\, in the hospital where he works\, Dr. Nariman finds out that the little boy has been brought in for an autopsy after a suspicious death. Dr. Nariman is facing a dilemma: is he responsible for the child's death due to the car accident\, or did the child die of food poisoning according to other doctors' diagnoses? Winner of the Orizzonti Award for Best Director and Best Actor at last year's Venice Film Festival\, No Date\, No Signature is a masterful\, suspenseful examination of the questions of guilt and class\, reminiscent of the finest works by Asghar Farhadi and Krzysztof Kieslowski. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-20]

DESCRIPTION:If you've heard of Thomas the Tank Engineâ„¢\, this is his real life cousin! For the first time since the 1950s\, the hills will once again echo with steam whistles when the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum hosts real steam train rides on August 18-19 and 25-26. The museum will host Viscose Co. No. 6\, a vintage steam locomotive that once operated for the American Viscose Co. in Roanoke\, Virginia. Enjoy a ride in our new open-air touring car so you can experience all the sights and sounds of the steam locomotive as it works hard to pull against the steep grades. Seats are also available inside our caboose if you prefer a quieter ride. Thanks to the cooperation of the neighboring New York Museum of Transportation\, visitors will be able to enjoy an extended two-mile round trip through our bucolic museum grounds. Live entertainment will be provided by banjo player Mike Kornrich. Visitors will also enjoy a live blacksmithing demonstration while they tour our museum exhibits and our large collection of historic trains.
