SUMMARY:Dolina miru (Valley of Peace) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Dolina miru (Valley of Peace\, France Å tiglic\, Yugoslavia 1956\, 88 min.\, DCP\, Slovenian w/subtitles) as part of the Black History Month series. \nIn the middle of World War II\, war orphans Marko and Lotti try to reach the "valley of peace" to find shelter. On their way\, they meet an American pilot\, Jim (John Kitzmiller)\, fleeing after the crash of his plane. Both the German enemy and the allies are racing to find him\, but the heroic GI is slowed down by the two children he has taken under his wing. With Valley of Peace\, France Å tiglic brought Yugoslav film to a world stage: his humanist masterpiece premiered at the 1956 Cannes Festival\, where Kitzmiller won the award for Best Actor. A former GI\, Kitzmiller came to film a few years after landing in Italy\, after a proposal from a director looking for a black soldier. He then starred in a score of movies\, mostly Italian. After Valley of Peace\, his career took off\, and he became known for his parts in Dr. No (1962) and Uncle Tom's Cabin (1965). \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Jan-29]

SUMMARY:Crystal Z Campbell: Go-Rilla Means War Screening and Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:VSW will host Crystal Z Campbell and a screening of her experimental short film\, Go-Rilla Means War (Crystal Z Campbell\, 2017\, 20 min.) \nFeaturing 35mm footage salvaged from a now demolished black civil rights theater in Brooklyn\, New York\, Go-Rilla Means War is an experimental short that merges fact and fiction. The film is a relic of gentrification and highlights the complex intersections of development\, cultural preservation\, and erasure in the form of an intricately spoken parable and celluloid frames weathered by decades of urban neglect. \n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2018-Jan-29]

SUMMARY:What Can We Do about Twenty-First Century Racism?
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Derik Smith. Even as interpersonal and explicit "racism" is on the decline\, institutional racism holds steady and perpetuates old forms of social disenfranchisement in new ways. Many of us are adept at identifying and opposing easily recognized kinds of racism\, but if we want to be on the front lines of the struggle to bring about a more just and equitable society\, we must deeply consider our engagement with the institutions that produce racist outcomes today. \n [source: Rochester City Newspaper events calendar\, 2018-Jan-29]

SUMMARY:The Godfather screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola\, U.S. 1972\, 175 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Academy Awards at 90 series. \nOne of the biggest box office hits of all time\, The Godfather was dubbed "Gone With the Wind of gangster movies." Based on Mario Puzo's best-selling novel\, this epic rejuvenated the genre and can be seen as a metaphor for corruption on a larger scale\, in both government and corporate America. Marlon Brando gives a legendary performance as Don Vito\, the powerful head of the Corleone family\, who takes care of business using whatever means necessary. The Godfather garnered three Academy Awards: Best Picture\, Best Screenplay\, and Best Actor (refused by Brando amid great controversy). \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Jan-29]
