SUMMARY:Masterclass: Art and the Documentary Turn with Rachael Rakes and Leo Goldsmith
DESCRIPTION:Led by Workspace residents Rachael Rakes and Leo Goldsmith\, this lecture\, processual seminar considers the post-1990s "documentary turn" within contemporary art\, taking on coextensive pivots in non-fiction cinema towards a language of video art and installation\, from a variety of historical\, curatorial\, and critical perspectives. In addition to looking at examples in moving-image media\, the seminar touches upon artists working with still images\, objects\, performance\, sound\, interactivity\, and activism as documentary practice. Rakes and Goldsmith will discuss the relative discourses of documentary media and the art world\, consider the relationship between the traditions of art\, documentary\, archival research\, and journalism\, and raise issues of presentation\, contextualization\, and preservation for curators and artists alike in the current regime of contemporary art and neoliberal politics. The seminar will touch upon issues of production and exhibition of all forms of documentary art practice\, and also consider the politics and ethics of art-making in the social realm. This event should be of of interest to artists\, filmmakers\, curators\, activists\, writers\, and anyone interested in media and social practice. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2017-Aug-7]

SUMMARY:The Rise and Fall of the Clash screening
DESCRIPTION:The MAG will screen The Rise and Fall of the Clash (Danny Garcia\, U.K. 2012\, 90 min.) \nA personal glimpse into the juggernaut band The Clash\, and their meteoric trajectory through rock 'n'roll history\, The Rise and Fall of The Clash features previously unseen footage of the band at work and at play as well as interviews with the individual band members and with those who knew them well. This is not a film that pulls any punches\, nor does it overlook the life-changing effect that The Clash brought to so many. The Rise and Fall of The Clash paints the fascinating inside story of rivalries\, treachery\, betrayal and the internal band dynamics and managerial interference that ultimately led 'the only band that matters' to self-destruct. \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Aug-14]

SUMMARY:The Trump Card theatrical performance
DESCRIPTION:Support your favorite green with a fund raiser event put on by the Bread and Water Theater. This is a one man show that is well done\, fun and\, will help fund the campaign. In Mike Daisey's show "The Trump Card" Donald Trump is torn to shreds. This show pays full attention to The Donald in a way that enlightens you to the psychological disorders of the man. It tells his truth about Trump's tainted roots in a way that even Marvin Gaye could understand what's going on. The Trump Card is really a psychological deep dive into the mindset of a man who has taken America by storm\, just like the misogynistic beauty pageant that helped make him famous. Peppered with laugh-to-keep from-crying humor\, The Trump Card trumps anything you have seen or heard about Donald Trump and it's done with brutal candor\, profound insight into the workings of the dangerously competent and comedic genius. \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Aug-14]

SUMMARY:The Bad and the Beautiful screening (2017-Aug-17 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Bad and the Beautiful (Vincente Minnelli\, U.S. 1952\, 118 min.\, 35mm) as part of the National Endowment for the Arts series. \nWith characters loosely based on Hollywood players such as David O. Selznick\, Diana Barrymore\, and Val Lewton\, The Bad and the Beautiful hits home in the backstage drama department. Bolstered by Minnelli's clear\, insightful direction and a first-rate cast—Kirk Douglas\, Dick Powell\, Gloria Grahame\, Gilbert Roland\, and Lana Turner in probably her best performance ever—the film peels back the complicated layers of one producer's life and work and the love/hate relationships that sustain him. Selfishness\, generosity\, and psychological manipulation are all just tricks of the movie business trade. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Aug-14]

SUMMARY:Clarissa Street Reunion
DESCRIPTION:The Clarissa Street Reunion is an annual festival that takes place in one of the most culturally rich neighborhoods of Rochester. The event celebrates a neighborhood known for producing renowned jazz musicians in the 1940's\, 1950's\, and 1960's. Clarissa Street\, which is located in the southwest quadrant of Rochester and the old 3rd Ward\, was a true melting pot which brought together people of Black\, Italian\, Irish\, and Jewish descent. Streets were made of cobblestone and trolley cars were a familiar sight. The Clarissa Street Reunion\, held annually since 1996\, is a wonderful celebration of the memories and the relationships that were formed in the neighborhood. \n [source: Flying Squirrel website\, 2017-Aug-14]

SUMMARY:Steam Trains Return to Rochester (2017-Aug-19 @ 10 a.m.)
DESCRIPTION:If you've heard of Thomas the Tank Engineâ„¢\, this is his real life cousin! For the first time since 1955\, the hills will once again echo with steam whistles when the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum hosts real steam train rides on August 19-20 and 26-27. The museum will host Viscose Co. No. 6\, a vintage steam locomotive that once operated for the American Viscose Co. in Roanoke\, Virginia. Enjoy a ride in our new open-air touring car so you can experience all the sights and sounds of the steam locomotive as it works hard to pull against the steep grades. Seats are also available inside our caboose if you prefer a quieter ride. Thanks to the cooperation of the neighboring New York Museum of Transportation\, visitors will be able to enjoy an extended two-mile round trip through our bucolic museum grounds. Live entertainment will be provided by banjo player Mike Kornrich. Visitors will also enjoy a live blacksmithing demonstration while they tour our museum exhibits and our large collection of historic trains. Refreshments will be available for purchase\, including a full grill menu. Our museum gift shop is stocked with many railroad souvenirs for any train buff. \n [source: Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum website\, 2017-Aug-14]

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Arleen Thaler: We are Plastic
DESCRIPTION:In the Photography Gallery of the Flower City Arts Center is an Artist Talk with Arleen Thaler: We are Plastic. \nArleen Thaler\, a Rochester based documentary photographer\, will discuss her experience documenting plastic waste in Upstate New York with her husband\, Daryl. As an artist-in-residence at Flower City Arts Center\, Arleen has focused her lens on litter – plastic in particular. Sharing facts and photos\, she will explore how plastic affects the earth and what steps you can take in reducing your plastic consumption\, not an easy task! In 2012 and 2013 Ngo 5 Gyres sampled areas of Lake Ontario\, they recorded levels of plastic as high as 1.1 million particles per square km. Alex Mifflin of Now Toronto states\, "Just like the infamous garbage patches of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans\, our own backyard has been turned into a plastic soup – only our lakes have even higher concentrations of plastics than the biggest ocean garbage patches." Being a visual artist collecting and capturing plastic along the shores of Lake Ontario and parks in and around Monroe County has inspired action within the community. While raising her own family's awareness\, Arleen is hopeful in raising an awareness in you Join her as she engages you on the alternatives while sharing her artist activism. \n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2017-Aug-14]
