SUMMARY:The Spy Who Loved Me screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Spy Who Loved Me (Lewis Gilbert\, U.K. 1977\, 125 min.\, 35mm). \nConsidered by many to be the best of the Roger Moore era\, The Spy Who Loved Me was the tenth Bond film to be produced. It is largely a mirror that reflects many elements from other Bond films: Thunderball's underwater action sequences\, a megalomaniacal business mogul similar to the titular villain from Goldfinger (and anticipating the villain from 1997's Tomorrow Never Dies)\, From Russia with Love's globe-trotting escapades with a sexy rival spy\, and You Only Live Twice's plot in which an evildoer tries to play Eastern and Western powers against one another to bring about global chaos. The Spy Who Loved Me lies at the heart of what Bond really is: a pastiche of spy and action tropes with a focus on audience satisfaction. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-2]

SUMMARY:Live and Let Die screening (2016-May-9 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Live and Let Die (Guy Hamilton\, U.K. 1973\, 121 min.\, 35mm). \nIn his six Bond films\, Sean Connery laid a legendary blueprint for the hyper-masculine and impossibly gifted action hero James Bond 007\, leaving behind a lasting cultural legacy. His replacement\, the English redhead Roger Moore\, brings a different brand of sexual charisma and debonair charm to the role\, supplanting Connery's more brutish and rugged character. Live and Let Die kicked off a series of seven consecutive films over twelve years in which Moore played 007—the most of any Bond actor to date. The film features many elements drawn from the then-popular blaxploitation genre and sees 007 once more travel to the Caribbean to thwart a power-hungry villain. Paul McCartney and his new band Wings provide the famous theme song. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Apr-25]

SUMMARY:Hamlet screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Hamlet (Svend Gade and Heinz Schall\, Germany 1921\, 104 min.\, 35mm\, w/ English intertitles) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nMany silent filmmakers turned to Shakespeare for source material\, transforming the Bard's verbal poetry and drama into visual equivalents\, but none more unusually than this project spearheaded by the legendary Danish actress Asta Nielsen. Nielsen\, who takes the title role in this production\, brings more than one kind of ambiguity into her portrayal of the "melancholy Dane\," which also gains weight from being shot at some of the actual settings (such as Elsinore Castle) called for in the play. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-2]
