SUMMARY:Lost Horizon screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Lost Horizon (Frank Capra\, U.S. 1937\, 97 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Capra series. \nJames Hilton's beautiful\, melancholy novel Lost Horizon introduced the world to Shangri-La\, a place of peace and contentment\, and it became an equally popular film under the guidance of director Frank Capra. Set in a troubled world on the brink of a cataclysmic global war\, a small group of individuals are given the opportunity to lead lives rich with meaning through the extension of time. Ronald Coleman is perfectly cast as Conway\, the sad-eyed and weary golden boy of the British Civil Service. A reluctant hero\, Conway has seen too much; his soul bears enough sadness to last a lifetime. Shangri-La offers him a chance for emotional\, spiritual\, and physical renewal—and a long life of unimaginable peace and happiness—if only he can break the ties that bind him to the past. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Nov-27]

SUMMARY:Resisting State Repression in the Trump Era
DESCRIPTION:The first Monday of every month the Flying Squirrel hosts an event that seeks to examine the role that our community space can play in creating positive social change. This month we will be examining what new trends in political repression mean for us and how we can resist their influences. Beginning his first day in office\, Trump and his appointees have attempted to squash resistance to their regime by demanding prosecuters and DAs seek the most extreme possible charges against protestors. This month\, we will dive deep into the intricacies of the state's strategies against popular resistance and begin to examine what the best movement response to this repression would be. Helping us in this investigation will be Heidi Reynolds Stenson\, a sociologist who has studied the effects of state repression on social movements\, Erik\, a protester arrested on J20 who is facing 60 years in prison in the wake of this repression. \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Nov-27]

SUMMARY:Reimagine RTS "Meeting in a Box"
DESCRIPTION:Members of local non-profit organizations with an interest in mass transit / sustainability are invited. The meeting is open to the public. The Reimagine RTS is a planning process that will study and explore changes to the RTS fixed-route transit system to better meet the changing needs of the region. For this meeting\, we will be provided with guidelines by RTS's "Meeting in a Box". The "Reimagine RTS" process provides a rare opportunity to improve the public transit system in Rochester\, thereby significantly reducing green-house gas emissions\, providing more equitable transportation options for low-income residents\, increasing mass transit ridership\, and providing a stimulus for urban revitalization in downtown Rochester. \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Nov-27]

SUMMARY:The Love Parade screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Love Parade (Ernst Lubitsch\, U.S. 1929\, 107 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nMaurice Chevalier became an overnight film sensation in his first sound feature Innocents of Paris; his sophistication\, insouciance\, overwhelming charm\, and natural comedic ability made him the first international star created by the new medium of talking pictures. Whereas Innocents of Paris had only a few songs created for Chevalier centered on a thin plot\, Paramount went all out for his second film\, The Love Parade. Ernest Vajda and Guy Bolton (whose collaborations with humorist P. G. Wodehouse had revolutionized musical theatre) wrote the script; multi-talented Victor Schertzinger (who had come to Hollywood to compose music for silent films but then became a major film director) wrote the score; brilliant newcomer Jeannette MacDonald made her screen debut; and the great director Ernst Lubitsch (who was also a trained musician) was assigned to bring everything together as his own first talkie. The result was cinema's first truly witty musical\, which rolls along with incredible fluency and ingratiating sauciness. Many of the songs became instant hits ("Paris\, Stay The Same\," "Dream Lover\," "Nobody's Using It Now\," and the title song)\, and Lubitsch even gave secondary couple Lillian Roth and Lupino Lane a spectacular showcase in their wild "Let's Be Common" number\, which is not to be missed! \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Nov-27]

SUMMARY:Fight for $15: Take action for fair scheduling!
DESCRIPTION:Act in solidarity with food service workers demanding fair scheduling! We'll be gathering to support hourly workers in calling attention to Governor Cuomo's Fair Scheduling Act\, which fast food workers have already won in New York City! This call to action will be supporting that victory and fighting for the same economic justice for food workers all across New York State. If passed through the Department of Labor\, the Fair Scheduling Act would require employers to give their workers at least two weeks notice on their schedule\, four hours pay for any shift lost within 72 hours\, and extra pay for last minute call-in shifts. This gives workers the more predictable and dependable schedule they deserve. For example\, employees with children or dependents would be better able to secure care. Therefore\, a statewide fair scheduling act would continue to tackle industry-wide abusive practices. So please join us on December 6th to show your support for fair scheduling and make sure restaurant owners respect their workers' rights! \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Nov-27]

SUMMARY:Schlafkrankheit (Sleeping Sickness) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Squeaky Wheel will screen Schlafkrankheit (Sleeping Sickness\, Ulrich Köhler\, Germany / France / Netherlands 2011\, 91 min.) \n"This remarkably assured third feature by the young German director Ulrich Köhler—winner of Best Director at this year's Berlin Film Festival—transports us to Cameroon\, where German doctor Ebbo (Pierre Bokma) and his wife have spent two decades combating an epidemic of sleeping sickness in the local villages. Soon\, they will return to Europe and to lives long ago put on hold\, and this has created a crisis for Ebbo\, who\, like Joseph Conrad's Kurtz\, has spent too much time up river to ever come back down. Meanwhile\, a young black doctor—a Frenchman born to Congolese parents—travels to Africa to evaluate the efficiency of Ebbo's program. But when he arrives\, nothing goes according to plan\, and despite his heritage\, he feels very much a stranger in a strange land. Finally\, the two subjects of this haunting meditation on Africa's past and future dovetail—effortlessly\, seamlessly—and the cumulative impact is stunning." — Film Society of Lincoln Center \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2017-Nov-27]

SUMMARY:It's a Wonderful Life screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen It's a Wonderful Life (Frank Capra\, U.S. 1946\, 130 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Capra\, and Holidays series. "Special introduction by Karolyn Grimes and Jimmy Hawkins\, who portrayed Zuzu and Tommy Bailey in the film. The actors will share behind-the- scenes stories of the making of this beloved classic." \nIn one of the most inspirational films of all time\, James Stewart and Donna Reed find their way through rough times in Bedford Falls (modeled after nearby Seneca Falls\, New York) by way of a loving\, dedicated relationship and a little heavenly intervention. As Stewart's and Capra's first work after their military service\, the film takes the postwar malaise often seen in film noir and turns it on its head\, constructing a narrative of faith and perseverance. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Nov-27]

SUMMARY:Om Shanti Om screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Om Shanti Om (Farah Khan\, India 2007\, 162 min.\, 35mm\, Hindi and Urdu w/subtitles) as part of the Stories of Indian Cinema: Abandoned and Rescued series. \nMusic! Romance! Drama! Suspense! The greatest box office triumph in the history of Indian cinema at the time of its release is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Bollywood in its most popular and beloved form. Spanning three decades—from the 1970s to the new millennium—this cinematic extravaganza is about the magic of love\, filmmaking\, and reincarnation. Directed by the most acclaimed female director and choreographer of the Indian film industry of modern times\, the film stars screen legend Shah Rukh Khan and features no less than 42 celebrities in the musical set piece of the film's climactic sequence. Its sources of inspiration are two classics: Bimal Roy's Madhumati (1958) and Rishi Kapoor's Karz (1980); Kapoor himself is seen dancing in the opening sequence of this exhilarating tribute to cinematic illusion. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-4]
