SUMMARY:Gandhi screening (2019-Oct-13 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Gandhi (Richard Attenborough\, U.K./India 1982\, 191 min.\, 35mm) with a Special Introduction by Arun Gandhi\, grandson of Mohandas Gandhi and founder of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence as part of the Gandhi at 150 series. \nCelebrating the 150th anniversary of Mohandas Gandhi's birth\, the Dryden Theatre presents Attenborough's Academy Award—winning epic for the first time. The film follows Gandhi from his early adulthood\, beginning in South Africa as he becomes a proponent of nonviolent protest through to his efforts to oppose British rule in India. Gandhi's methods inspired great leaders throughout the twentieth century\, including Martin Luther King Jr.\, Lech Walesa\, the Dalai Lama\, and Nelson Mandela\, making him one of the most influential persons of modern times. The film earned eight Oscars in all\, including Best Picture\, Best Director\, and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley's timeless performance. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-7]

SUMMARY:Living Without Waste
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible to live without waste? Come enter the dialogue in this discussion of sustainable living with Zero Waste Coach and Professional Organizer Rebecca Silliman of Spacial Clarity! We will briefly review the theory of a zero-waste lifestyle in all of its complexity\, including privilege\, access\, and barriers to living sustainably and reducing waste. But what good is talk with no action? \nThis presentation will cover the 5 R's of zero waste (refuse\, reduce\, reuse\, recycle\, and rot) and how to implement each principle in daily life. You'll come away with practical methods for reducing waste and starting on a longer-term\, incremental journey towards minimizing waste. \nIn a society set up for waste\, reclaim your power to make a positive change for your life and the world. \n\n [source: Abundance Food Co-op events page\, 2019-Oct-7]

SUMMARY:Trick screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Trick (Jim Fall\, U.S. 1999\, 89 min.\, 35mm) followed by a Discussion with director Jim Fall as part of the ImageOut of the Archives series. \nTrick is truly a boy-meets-go-go-boy Manhattan fairy tale\, but real life intrudes when its would-be lovers have nowhere to do the deed. Christian Campbell plays Gabriel\, a shy aspiring musical-theatre writer who takes a chance on John Paul Pitoc's hunky dancer\, Mark. As they hunt for hookup sanctuary\, they stumble into piano bars and dance clubs and encounter various relationships as they wander the streets of New York City. Could a potential one-night stand lead to something more? In today's Grindr-dominated world\, the film might have been more cynical or its characters more jaded. Instead\, Jim Fall's breezy direction invites you to enjoy every step of Gabriel and Mark's journey while convincing you that these two guys might actually make it after the credits roll. Trick may start with hormones\, but it leaves you with a full heart. To celebrate the film's twentieth anniversary this year\, we are proud to bring Trick back to Rochester as our ImageOut of the Archives selection. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-7]

SUMMARY:Lecture: Sovereignty\, Photography\, and Queen Victoria
DESCRIPTION:Announced only two years into Queen Victoria's reign\, the invention of photography heralded a new form of representation\, one that spoke equally on behalf of the powerful and among the populace. Like many world leaders of the time\, Victoria willingly submitted so many elements of her personal and political life to the camera\, shaping the way her subjects perceived her at home and abroad in the growing Empire. What does it mean when such power embraced this new visual technology\, whose effects quickly spurred novel confrontations in culture between art and enterprise\, tradition and modernity\, sovereign power and democratic practice? \nThis lecture explores the art and politics behind the monarch's embrace of photography in her many portrayals before the lens\, as well as in her patronage together with Prince Albert of photographic artists like Roger Fenton and Julia Margaret Cameron. Jacob W. Lewis teaches nineteenth-century art and the history of photography as Visiting Assistant Professor in Art and Art History. He is currently editing an anthology of essays on the topic of photography's ubiquity for Leuven University Press\, as well as writing a text on genre photography in France during the 1850s. \n\n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2019-Oct-7]

SUMMARY:Love Me or Leave Me screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Love Me or Leave Me (Charles Vidor\, U.S. 1955\, 122 min.\, 35mm) as part of the In Memoriam: Doris Day series. \nJazz singer Ruth Etting is brought gloriously to life by Doris Day in this biopic. The film follows her career—rising from 1920s taxi dancer to movie star—and troubled marriage to her mobster husband (James Cagney). Etting was a nightclub singer with looks and a great voice\, but it took Chicago mobster Marty "The Gimp" Snyder to make her a star in Hollywood and on Broadway. Simultaneously aided and frustrated by her husband's headstrong ways and pressure tactics\, Etting in her offstage life becomes haunted by fear and violence at the hands of the cruel gangster. Love Me or Leave Me succeeds as both crime drama and musical—the latter greatly enhanced by Day's vocal talent in the film's twelve complete musical numbers. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-7]

SUMMARY:The Langenheim Brothers at Niagara Falls: Photographic Fusions and the Mass Marketing of Photography lecture
DESCRIPTION:Much of the credit or blame for developing mass-marketable forms of photographs in the United States should go to the Langenheim brothers\, Frederick and William\, of Philadelphia. Between 1845 and 1860 they introduced a string of innovations that resulted in landscape stereographs becoming the first variety of photographs to achieve mass distribution. The story of that accomplishment constitutes an important chapter in the development of a mass market in the U. S. for pictures in the broadest sense. \n [source: Rochester City Newspaper events calendar\, 2019-Oct-14]

SUMMARY:Wes Urbaniak and the Mountain Folk musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Wes Urbaniak and the Mountain Folk are an amphipathic resin that stabilizes the emulsion created from genre mixing. That's a mouthful\, right? One part fairytale and two parts science – this mixture defines the band both in songwriting as well as in presentation. The songs twist and contort themselves around conscious themes and common experiences of the most lived-in journey in a way best described as: a new way to say the same thing. Even the instruments Urbaniak builds do this. \n [source: Facebook\, 2019-Oct-14]

SUMMARY:Stephen King's Dollar Babies\, Program 1 screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Stephen King's Dollar Babies\, Program 1 featuring: \n\nHarvey's Dream (Jainardhan Sathyan\, U.S. 2016\, 10 min.)\nDedication (Tyna Ezenma\, U.S. 2017\, 19 min.)\nRest Stop (Paul Mortsolf\, U.S. 2019\, 14 min.)\nInto the Night (Walter Perez\, U.S. 2019\, 33 min.)\nRainy Season (Vanessa Ionta Wright\, U.S. 2017\, 21 min.)\nA Very Tight Place (Stephen Tramontana\, U.S. 2019\, 21 min.)\n\n "After the program\, directors Walter Perez and Stephen Tramontana will take the stage for a Q&A about their films." \nUnnerving\, disturbing tales are Stephen King's specialty\, as evidenced by these six films adapted from his short stories (see October 31 for a second program of Dollar Babies). An aging husband's neurological decline may or may not reveal and unthinkable tragedy; a maid visits a priestess\, who has some unusual advice about her unborn son and the author staying at her hotel; an author must decide how much he relates to the characters he's created; a snowy crash in Jerusalem's Lot causes trouble for a couple of nearby townsfolk; a young couple ignores warnings to leave their summer cottage; and a man's plan for revenge hits a roadblock when he's locked in a portable toilet. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-14]

SUMMARY:That 1 Guy musical performance (2019-Oct-17 @ 9 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Bug Jar will host beat-charged\, experimental extravaganza\, one-man-band <!– 2010-Mar-7: Castaways (Ithaca)-excellent performance with an unclassifiable sound that's related to jam bands\, hip-hop\, rock\, synth-pop\, and novelty acts\, also 2003-Apr-17 Bug Jar-He plays a "magic pipe" which is a custom-built instrument made of drain pipe. It's got a high-note string on one side and a bass string on another. It also has mini drum pads hooked into his sequencer for various effects. His music is a beat-charged experimental extravaganza. I decided that there must be dozens of reasons to see a show: \n\nlike to see Dr. Seuss creations brought to life (according to him\, "apocalyptic Seuss.") \nlove duct tape \nwant to see how to do the one-man-band thing right \nyou've got a thing for the user interfaces on Kai's Power Tools and want to see it built in real-life \nlove of the Rube Goldberg machine \nlike the look of plumbing in a demolished building \nlike to say\, "I saw That 1 Guy and his magic pipe." \n\n –>That1Guy.
