SUMMARY:Who Will Write Our History screening (2019-Jan-27 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Who Will Write Our History (Roberta Grossman\, U.S. 2018\, 95 min.\, English\, Yiddish and Polish w/subtitles) as part of the L'chaim: Celebrating Jewish Life series and in honor of International Holocaust Awareness Day. \nIn November 1940\, days after the Nazis sealed 450\,000 Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto\, a secret band of journalists\, scholars\, and community leaders decided to fight back. This clandestine group vowed to defeat Nazi lies and propaganda not with guns or fists but with pen and paper. For the first time\, their story is told\, mixing the writings of the Oyneg Shabes archive with new interviews\, rarely seen footage\, and stunning dramatizations with the voices of Adrien Brody\, Joan Allen\, and more. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jan-21]

SUMMARY:Barnes Science and Faith Symposium: Ten Reasons the Science and Theology Dialogue Matters
DESCRIPTION:Albert Einstein famously said "science without religion is lame\, religion without science is blind." But Einstein was a novice theologian. And contemporary science has changed in drastic ways since Einstein. What should we say about the relationship between science and theology today? Dr. Thomas Jay Oord\, Northwest Nazarene University professor\, offers ten reasons why this often volatile dialogue is more important now than it was in Einstein's time. \n [source: Rochester City Newspaper events calendar\, 2019-Jan-23]

SUMMARY:Reversal of Fortune screening (2019-Jan-29 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Reversal of Fortune (Barbet Schroeder\, U.S. 1990\, 111 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Glenn Close series. \nNarrating the film from her comatose state\, Sunny von Bülow (Glenn Close) tells the story of her husband\, Claus (Jeremy Irons)\, their unhappy marriage\, and her hypoglycemic condition. After Sunny falls into a coma twice within a year\, Claus is convicted for attempted murder\, since he stands to inherit $14 million from his wife. He seeks out Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz (Ron Silver) to handle his appeal. Dershowitz\, believing him guilty\, charges him a large amount of money\, which would allow him to defend two youths in a separate case. As he becomes more involved with the von Bülow case\, however\, Dershowitz sees that things are not as clear-cut as he had imagined\, and he must wrestle with his own conscience and morality. Based on Dershowitz's own memoir\, this film garnered Academy Award nominations for Best Actor (Irons)\, Best Director\, and Best Adapted Screenplay. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jan-21]

SUMMARY:La vie de Bohème screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La vie de Bohème (Albert Capellani\, U.S. 1916\, 71 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Winter Romance series. \nHewing closer to Henri Murger's original 1851 text than the Puccini opera that made the story famous\, this film uses high production values to tell the tale of young people living in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the mid-1800s. Mimi\, who had been abandoned as a baby to a convent\, takes a job as a barmaid and falls in love with Rudolphe\, a poet from a well-to-do family\, but both friends and family strive to keep them apart. French filmmakers working in the United States bring excellent set and costume design\, as well as cinematography and direction to this classic tragic romance. A young Alice Brady (My Man Godfrey) surprises in one of her earliest extant films. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jan-21]

SUMMARY:Lost Lost Lost: A Tribute to Jonas Mekas
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we collectively celebrate the life and mourn the death of Jonas Mekas\, a champion of experimental cinema\, who passed away on January 23rd at the age of 96. Mekas emigrated to the U.S. in 1949 after fleeing his native Lithuania during the second world war\, and with the help of his brother Adolphas\, began documenting his life through the lens of a Bolex 16mm camera. Mekas was an avid participant in the early avant-garde film scene in NYC not only as an artist\, but also as a curator\, critic and co-founder of the influential journal Film Culture. Mekas also co-founded the Filmmaker's Cooperative in 1962 and Anthology Film Archives in 1964\, and made well over 50 films in his lifetime. \nWe will show a selection of Mekas' films found in the VSW film collection\, including Notes on Circus (1966)\, with live readings from his writings for Film Journal and the Village Voice. Refreshments will be served as we raise a glass to the life and work of one of experimental cinemas' greatest visionaries. \n\n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:Rockstar screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Rockstar (Imtiaz Ali\, India 2011\, 159 min.\, 35mm\, Hindi w/subtitles) as part of the Bollywood and Beyond! series. \nWith music by Academy Award—winning composer and songwriter A. R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire)\, Rockstar is considered to be the best film of director Imtiaz Ali. Janardan Jakhar Jj (Ranbir Kapoor) has musical talent\, but he believes "music comes from a broken heart"—and because of his middle-class upbringing\, he thinks he hasn't suffered enough pain to be really great. Convinced by his buddies to go see Heer Kaul (Nargis Fakhri) dance "a heartbreaker\," he transforms from an innocent young man to an angry rockstar. This film takes us from Delhi\, Kashmir\, Mumbai\, and Dharamsala\, India\, to Prague. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:Hva vil folk si (What Will People Say) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Hva vil folk si (What Will People Say\, Iram Haq\, Norway/Germany/Sweden/France/Denmark 2017\, 106 min.\, DCP\, Norwegian\, Urdu w/subtitles). \nSixteen-year-old Nisha leads a double life. Out with her friends\, she's a typical Norwegian teenager. At home with her family\, she is the perfect Pakistani daughter. But when her father catches her alone with her boyfriend\, Nisha's two worlds brutally collide. To set an example and escape the judgment of their peers\, Nisha's parents send her to live with extended family in a small town in Pakistan. There\, in an unfamiliar country surrounded by people she barely knows\, Nisha must adapt to a rigid culture that denies her the freedoms she once enjoyed. A tense and moving drama about women's rights\, immigrant identity\, and familial duties\, the film is based on director Iram Haq's own experiences as a young Pakistani woman in Norway. Eighteen-year-old Maria Mozhdah makes an astounding debut as Nisha and veteran actor Adil Hussain (Life of Pi) turns in a nuanced performance as her father. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jan-28]
