SUMMARY:Boogie Nights screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Boogie Nights (Paul Thomas Anderson\, U.S. 1997\, 155 min.) as part of the Mondo Movie Series with an introduction by Erich Van Dussen. \nEddie Adams would have been just another high-school drop-out had he not met the likes of adult film director Jack Horner. Horner transforms Eddie into Dirk Diggler\, a rising-star actor with a special gift. Set in the late 1970s and early 1980s\, the film is a tribute to the decor\, style\, culture\, and social attitudes of the era. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Randle and the Late Night Scandals\, Folkfaces musical performances
DESCRIPTION:A blend of charisma\, sensuality\, serious chops and the ability to make soul\, funk\, r&b and blues commingle in a perfectly seasoned gumbo\, that is Randle and the Late Night Scandals. \nFolkfaces is a group out of Buffalo\, NY that plays a rowdy blend of rootsy folk\, jazz\, and blues-fusing classic forms with contemporary feeling and irresistibly danceable energy. Their inspiration comes from the mountains of Appalachia to the deltas of Mississippi\, the swamps of Louisiana to the concrete jungle of the Rustbelt. Specializing in merriment and sticking it to the system\, Folkfaces make the crowd dance and the hierarchy shatter. \n [source: Abilene website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Nuts! screening (2016-Aug-13 @ 1 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Nuts! (Penny Lane\, U.S. 2016\, 79 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nNuts! is a feature length documentary [directed by Penny Lane] about Dr. John Romulus Brinkley\, an eccentric genius who built an empire in Depression-era America with a goat testicle impotence cure and a million watt radio station. Using animated reenactments\, interviews\, archival footage\, and a hilariously unreliable narrator\, Nuts! traces Brinkley's rise from poverty and obscurity to the heights of celebrity\, wealth and influence in Depression-era America. Along the way\, he transplants tens of thousands of goat testicles; amasses an enormous fortune; is (sort of) elected Governor of Kansas; builds the world's most powerful radio station; invents junk mail\, the infomercial\, the sound-truck and Border Radio; hosts some epic parties; and annoys the heck out of the establishment\, until finally his audacious actions force the federal government to create regulations to stop him. How he does it\, and what happens when it all comes crashing down\, is the story of Nuts! \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Aug-1]

SUMMARY:Rounding Third theatrical performance (2016-Aug-13 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of Rounding Third by Richard Dresser. \nRounding Third\, a hilarious play by Richard Dresser\, introduces us to two Little League coaches — one a veteran\, the other a new recruit — and their markedly different personal circumstances and philosophies about the game. The audience is the stand-in for the team\, so the coaches speak directly to the audience about competition\, character\, punctuality\, and the importance of wearing the right equipment. Don\, played by Jeff Siuda\, is the tough\, blue-collar\, win-at-all-costs veteran coach whose son is the star pitcher. Michael\, played by Ross Amstey\, is a newcomer both to the town and to baseball. He's a corporate executive who agrees to be Don's assistant because he wants a special activity with his son\, who's never played baseball before. Out of these conflicting philosophies\, the real issues of the play emerge: how should we raise our children? Since we live in such a ferociously competitive society\, do we protect our children as long as possible? Or do we prepare them to be tough enough to win? You might be surprised at how you think about these essential questions. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Ran screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ran (Akira Kurosawa\, Japan/France 1985\, 160 min.\, 35mm\, Japanese w/subtitles). \nKurosawa's spellbinding epic of feudal disorder focuses on the alienation brought on by man's lust for power and depicts it with violence set to classical cadences. Shakespeare's King Lear refashioned through samurai stylings\, Ran centers on warlord Hidetora's abdication and decision to divide his holdings between his three sons. Seen on the big screen\, Kurosawa's mass orchestration of movement\, color\, landscape\, and spectacle achieve a jaw-dropping beauty. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Maurice screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Maurice (James Ivory\, U.K. 1987\, 140 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Summer of Solidarity series. \nFollowing his successful adaptation of E. M. Forster's novel A Room with a View\, James Ivory adapted this curiously minor Forster work and created something major. Maurice\, while studying in Cambridge\, finds himself falling in love with his classmate Clive. Succumbing to the pressures of British society\, they are forced to keep their relationship a secret—taking a toll on both their lives. Ivory's beautiful direction\, Pierre Lhomme's unmistakable cinematography\, and the talented cast breathe new life into Forster's novel on the perils of being an outsider in a culture of conformity. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-8]

SUMMARY:Old San Francisco screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Old San Francisco (Alan Crosland\, U.S. 1927\, 88 min.\, 35mm). \nThis film follows several generations of the Vasquez family from the eighteenth century and climaxes with the famous earthquake of 1906. Dolores Costello\, in her first solo-starring role as Dolores Vasquez\, is menaced by the villainous Chris Buckwell (played excellently by Warner Oland) until God's intervention saves her. With trapdoors\, underground passageways\, and nick-of-time rescues Old San Francisco has as much action and melodrama as the best cliff-hanger. Old San Francisco was unseen for many years until restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive in collaboration with the Library of Congress as part of The Dawn of Sound exhibition. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-8]

DESCRIPTION:Our 23rd season of Garden Vibes wraps up with Dom Flemons\, the "American Songster."
