SUMMARY:Panorama Ephemera screening\, Rick Prelinger discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Panorama Ephemera (Rick Prelinger\, U.S. 2004\, 89 min.\, digital) followed by a discussion with director Rick Prelinger. \nPanorama Ephemera is composed of 64 self-contained sequences drawn from a wide variety of ephemeral (industrial\, advertising\, educational\, and amateur) films ranging from 5 seconds to 4 minutes in length. The film's often-skewed visions of conflicted North American landscapes reconstruct a history filled with horror and hope\, unreeling in familiar and unexpected ways. Its cast includes children\, animals\, farmers\, industrial workers\, superheroes\, pioneers heading west\, crash test dummies\, and many others. Many creatures\, objects\, and substances that often seem too familiar to notice take center stage\, including pigs\, corn\, water\, telephones\, fire\, and rice. At first resembling a compilation\, the film soon reveals itself as a journey through American landscape and history\, and the story begins to emerge between the sequences. While other found-footage or archival films speak as if in words or syllables\, Panorama Ephemera speaks in sentences and paragraphs. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-13]

SUMMARY:THX 1138 screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen THX 1138 (George Lucas\, U.S. 1971\, 86 min.) as part of the Mondo Movie Series. \nIn an undefined future\, a dystopian underground society is oriented to production and consumption in the malls. Faceless androids are responsible for the surveillance of the behavior of the dwellers and people pray in Unichapels for their god OMM 0910 that responds through recorded electronic messages. The worker THX 1138 handles radioactive materials in a factory and lives with his roommate LUH 3417. When she decides to stop using drugs\, she becomes lucid and replaces the drugs of her partner for harmless pills. THX becomes emotional again and falls in love with LUH. He plans to escape with LUH to the superstructure\, where they expect to live in freedom. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Jun-13]

SUMMARY:How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can't Change screening (2016-Jun-18 @ 1 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can't Change (Josh Fox\, U.S. 2016\, 125 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nIn How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can't Change\, Oscar Nominated director Josh Fox (Gasland) continues in his deeply personal style\, investigating climate change — the greatest threat our world has ever known. Traveling to 12 countries on six continents\, the film acknowledges that it may be too late to stop some of the worst consequences and asks\, what is it that climate change can't destroy? What is so deep within us that no calamity can take it away? \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-May-23]

SUMMARY:The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years (Penelope Spheeris\, U.S. 1988\, 93 min.\, 35mm). \nThe second installment of Penelope Spheeris's music documentary trilogy\, The Metal Years documents the L.A. metal scene of the late 1980s as a cultural phenomenon\, deviating from the political and ideological motivations of punk rock in Decline I to explore an altogether different kind of musical excess—one in which music is relegated to the background and women are treated as props in pursuit of money\, fame\, booze\, and teased hair. With a deft curiosity and exhilarating fascination\, Spheeris balances her interviews with struggling bands and their fans and groupies with those with metal veterans such as Ozzy Osbourne\, Alice Cooper\, and Chris Holmes—now disillusioned with fame and wrecked by substance abuse. Equally funny and disturbing\, The Metal Years is undeniably the most entertaining of the cult trilogy and can be appreciated by metal fans and its detractors alike. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-13]

SUMMARY:Andy Cohen musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Andy Cohen is a virtuoso fingerstyle guitarist who has been described as "a walking\, talking folk-blues-roots music encyclopedia." He grew up in a home with a piano and lots of Dixieland Jazz records. During the Sixties Folk Revival\, he got hooked on the music of Big Bill Broonzy and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. When Andy was 16\, he heard South Carolina's Rev. Gary Davis perform and the effect on him was profound. He has devoted his life to studying\, performing\, and promoting the blues of the southeastern states. Andy has played with many of the major blues players of the 20th century\, including Rev. Gary Davis\, John Jackson\, Phil Wiggins\, John Cephas\, Hank Duncan\, Honeyboy Edwards\, Mad Dog Lester\, Big Joe Duskin\, Howard Armstrong\, Elizabeth Cotten\, Etta Baker\, John Dee Holeman\, Larry Johnson\, Eugene Powell\, Johnnie Shines\, Jim Brewer\, Rev. Dan Smith\, and many others. He's hung out with even more. Andy has helped to support a number of his mentors — organizing festivals and gigs for them\, and writing about and paying homage to them. As well\, he's taught the tradition to a couple of dozen players who are now professionals. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2016-Jun-13]

SUMMARY:Macbeth screening (2016-Jun-19 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Macbeth (Orson Welles\, U.S. 1948\, 86 min.\, 35mm). \nFilming on leftover Western sets and in bizarre interiors that deliberately emphasize theatricality and illusion\, Orson Welles produced a moody\, highly atmospheric\, and stylized reinterpretation of Shakespeare's play to fit tidily into his oeuvre. As in the original text\, Macbeth is led by a prophecy and his ruthless wife into a bloody act that makes him king but dooms him to guilt and mental instability. In stressing the egocentrism and pride of Macbeth and their role in his rise and fall\, Welles's adaptation diverged from the importance of Lady Macbeth's agency in Shakespeare's verse. As Welles implies in a spoken foreword to the film\, his is a study of the tensions\, the political conflicts\, and the religious troubles of an ancient time. Monstrous\, tortured\, and grotesque attitudes were thus purposely created in both the treatment of the narrative and the portrayal of the characters to convey the vicious moods and ruthlessness of the Scottish warriors in Macbeth's day. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-13]

SUMMARY:Cabaret screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Cabaret (Bob Fosse\, U.S. 1972\, 122 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Summer of Solidarity series. \nChristopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories and John Van Druten's play I Am a Camera served as the source material for the Broadway musical that was brilliantly adapted to film by choreographer-director Bob Fosse. Liza Minnelli\, in her Academy Award-winning performance\, plays Sally Bowles\, a singer caught up in the glitz and decadence of interwar Germany. Two of the film's seven other Oscars went to Fosse and to Joel Grey\, who plays the emcee at the immortal Kit Kat Klub. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-17]
