SUMMARY:Rochester's Rich History Series\, Women Voted in New York—Before Columbus\, Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner will present a lecture titled Women Voted in New York — Before Columbus as part of Rochester's Rich History Series in the Rundel Auditorium of the Rundel Library Building. \nMarch is Women's History Month! While white women were the property of their husbands and considered dead in the law\, Haudenosaunee women had more authority and status before Columbus than United States women have today. Women of the Six Nation Iroquois Confederacy (the Haudenosaunee) had the responsibility for putting in place the male leaders. They had control of their own bodies and were economically independent. Committing violence against a woman kept a man from becoming Chief in this egalitarian\, gender-balanced society. When women in New York State began to organize for their rights in 1848\, they took their cue from the nearby Haudenosaunee communities\, where women lived in the world that non-native women dreamed. Amazingly\, despite the assimilation policy of the United States\, Haudenosaunee women still maintain much of this authority today. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2016-Mar-21]

SUMMARY:Anton Checkov's The Seagull theatrical performance (2016-Mar-26 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Oresteiaa daring new play is performed on the shore of a lake. Its idealistic young author is devastated when his work is mocked by family and friends. Passions and jealousies surge as his beloved gives her heart away to his older rival. With comic brio and keen understanding\, The Seagull explores our insatiable human desire to live an extraordinary life. When our dreams—and delusions—are dashed\, and all that remains is the excruciating ordinariness of daily living\, how do we find the strength to go on? \n [source: Bread and Water Theatre website\, 2016-Mar-14]

SUMMARY:An Evening with Joan Baez
DESCRIPTION:In Babeville's Asbury Hall is An Evening with Joan Baez. \nMore than 50 years into a storied career\, Joan Baez remains a musical force of nature whose influence is incalculable — marching on the front line of the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King\, inspiring Vaclav Havel in his fight for a Czech Republic\, singing on the first Amnesty International tour and more recently\, standing alongside Nelson Mandela when the world celebrated his 90th birthday in London's Hyde Park. She shined a spotlight on the Free Speech Movement\, took to the fields with Cesar Chavez\, organized resistance to the Vietnam War\, then forty years later saluted the Dixie Chicks for their courage to protest the Iraq war. Her earliest recordings fed a host of traditional ballads into the rock vernacular\, before she unselfconsciously introduced Bob Dylan to the world in 1963\, beginning a tradition of mutual mentoring that continues to this day. \n [source: Babeville website\, 2016-Mar-21]

SUMMARY:The Long Gray Line screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Long Gray Line (John Ford\, U.S. 1955\, 136 min.\, 35mm). \nIn this impeccably designed Technicolor drama\, John Ford cast Maureen O'Hara—one of his favorite female leads—in the role of Mary O'Donnell\, wife of Martin "Marty" Maher Jr. (Tyrone Power)\, an Irish expatriate who joined the United States Army in 1898. Based on Maher's autobiography\, The Long Gray Line recounts his nearly fifty years of service at the United States Military Academy at West Point\, where he began as a dishwasher and rose to the rank of master sergeant\, before serving out the remainder of his years there as a beloved coach. In many respects\, The Long Gray Line is a masterwork of realist cinema. Much of the film was shot on location at West Point\, whose campus and surrounding environment was rendered by Ford and his cinematographers (Charles Lawton Jr. and Charles Lang) using Cinemascope lenses and a muted\, naturalistic color scheme. The film traverses long passages of time through elegant\, barely noticeable cuts and dissolves\, while O'Hara and Power embody their characters at various points in their lives so convincingly that we believe we're seeing them age before our eyes. But even amid these realist tropes\, The Long Gray Line does not shy away from spectacle and exaggeration\, whether in the form of slapstick—power was a genius of physical comedy—or melodrama. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Mar-21]

SUMMARY:Our Man in Havana screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Our Man in Havana (Carol Reed\, U.K. 1959\, 93 min.\, 35mm). \nThis irreverent Cold War spy film was the last in a series of exalted collaborations—including The Fallen Idol (1948) and The Third Man (1949)—between director Carol Reed and author Graham Greene. Though it takes place in pre-revolutionary Cuba\, Our Man in Havana was shot on location only two months after the fall of the Batista regime by Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement (Castro even paid a visit to the film's set). Here we find a city teeming with excitement and life\, which spills over even the film's widescreen frame. Against this extraordinary backdrop\, we meet James Wormold (Alec Guinness)\, a British vacuum cleaner salesman who is recruited to spy for the British intelligence agency by a man named Hawthorne (Noël Coward). More keen on benefiting himself than advancing his country's foreign interests\, Wormold puts together a bogus cell of agents and farcical plans for a rocket launch pad consisting of vacuum cleaner parts to convince his employers that he is indeed their man. MI6 eventually provides him with Beatrice (Maureen O'Hara): an adept administrator who comes to harbor suspicion regarding Wormold's abilities. Coward and Greene's Havana is marked by paradox\, their characters by ambivalence and a decidedly comic ineptitude. For Greene in particular\, Havana at this time embodied the absurdities of the Cold War\, leading him to wonder\, "Who can accept the survival of Western capitalism as a great cause?" \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Mar-21]

SUMMARY:The Conversation screening (2016-Mar-28 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Conversation (Francis Ford Coppola\, U.S. 1974\, 112 min.\, 35mm). \nThe quintessential study of Watergate-era paranoia\, Coppola's small-scale follow-up to his Godfather triumphs is one of his tightest and most effective films. Gene Hackman gives a compelling performance as a middle-aged surveillance wizard whose resurgent conscience involves him in a murder/conspiracy. While Coppola's films are notable for their visual style\, The Conversation complements this attribute with a masterfully constructed soundtrack that plays a critical role in the films many startling revelations. It is an assured and infinitely rewarding film that embodies its cultural and political climate like few others. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Mar-21]

SUMMARY:China Girls in Experimental Film
DESCRIPTION:In Hutchison Hall's Hubbell Auditorium on the UofR Campus is a film program and discussion by Genevieve Yue titled China Girls in Experimental Film featuring New Improved Institutional Quality: In the Environment of Liquids and Nasals a Parasitic Vowel Sometimes Develops (Owen Land\, 1976\, 16mm\, 10 min)\, Film in Which There Appear Sprocket Holes\, Edge Lettering\, Dirt Particles\, Etc. (Owen Land\, 1965–66\, 16mm\, 4 min)\, Standard Gauge (Morgan Fisher\, 1984\, 16mm\, 35 min)\, China Girls (Michelle Silva\, 2006\, 16mm\, 3 min)\, To the Happy Few (Thomas Draschan\, Stella Friedrichs\, 2003\, 16mm\, 5 min)\, Killing Lena (Jamie Allen\, 2006\, DV\, 2 min)\, and Releasing Human Energies (Mark Toscano\, 2012\, 16mm\, 5.5 min). \nThe "China Girl\," sometimes called a "China Doll" or "girl head" is a type of reference image used in commercial film laboratories since the late 1920s and continuing in limited used today. The China Girl has appeared in more films than any actress\, though\, outside of the film laboratory\, she is rarely seen. Behind the scenes\, however\, she is essential to setting the appearance of a film\, determining exposure\, image density\, and color balance. While the China Girl is a crucial part of the film production process\, her essential role in film history has been most often overlooked. This program gathers a selection of 16mm experimental films that consider the China Girl from various perspectives\, including that of celluloid materiality\, the behind-the-scenes workings of the film industry\, and the often marginal role of women in film history. The screening is organized and will be preceded by an introduction by film scholar and Humanities Center fellow Genevieve Yue. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-Mar-21]

SUMMARY:Gun Crazy screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Gun Crazy (Joseph H. Lewis\, U.S. 1950\, 87 min.\, 35mm). \nBart Tare (John Dall)\, gun-obsessed even as a youth\, has recently returned from WWII. His life takes a sudden turn when he meets up with carnival sharpshooter Annie Laurie Starr (Peggy Cummings)\, a disturbed woman with a lust for crime. The spree they embark on is darkly manic\, tinged with a kind of sexual energy rarely seen in the Code era. Director Joseph H. Lewis never rose above the dismissive label of "B-Movie director\," but he was able to do a lot with his small budget\, giving the film an innovative feel even as it has many of the trappings of noir—especially the remarkable\, one-take bank heist scene. An undeniable influence on both the French New Wave and New Hollywood. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Mar-21]
