SUMMARY:The Chinatown Mystery\, Episodes 1–3 screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Chinatown Mystery\, Episodes 1–3 (J. P. Mcgowan\, U.S. 1928\, 82 min.\, 35mm) with piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nThis winter the Dryden will be screening the newly restored thrill busting silent serial The Chinatown Mystery\, starring legendary strongman and circus acrobat Joe Bonomo. Written by and co-starring Francis Ford (John Ford's older brother\, who had introduced John to filmmaking)\, this serial is filled with daring stunts\, death-defying situations\, and a rather offbeat sense of humor in the form of deceptively placid heroine Ruth Hiatt\, who had previously starred in numerous silent comedies. If you're looking for searing drama that shows life's grim realities\, we suggest driving in a Rochester blizzard; if you're looking for wide-eyed melodrama\, people being hurled every which way\, deep-dyed villainy\, and satisfying explosions\, join us for this exciting excursion into fiendish fun. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:Cheung foh (The Mission) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Cheung foh (The Mission\, Johnnie To\, Hong Kong 1999\, 84 min.\, 35mm\, Cantonese w/subtitles). \nAfter narrowly escaping assassination\, triad boss Lung (Eddy Ko) hires five of Hong Kong's most consummate henchman to protect him and track down his would-be killers. While the mission of these "brothers" is clear\, the task of the film itself proves to be of an altogether more ambiguous nature. For those familiar with To's work\, it would come as little surprise that Time Out New York dubbed The Mission one of the 100 best action films of all time. But while excitement is its generic promise\, much of To's film takes place in the time between what we usually think of as "action": preparations are made\, alliances are formed\, and discourse (often wordless) is conducted. Much of the rest consists in waiting. But to emphasize the cerebral tendencies The Mission is not to deny its capacity to thrill. Indeed\, the suspense and freneticism of the film are made all the more palpable by To's willingness to dwell in the everyday workings of these characters' lives. As viewers\, our only mission is to be captivated by what unfolds. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:Rochester Documentary Filmmakers January Members Meeting\, The Story of the A. C. Gilbert Company screening
DESCRIPTION:At the Rochester Documentary Filmmakers January Members Meeting is a screening of The Story of the A. C. Gilbert Company (Thomas B. Barker\, 2013\, 30 min.) \nCelebrate the 100th Anniversary of the introduction of the Erector Set. This is the story of that event and the man and the company behind Erector and many other scientific toys. Witness the era of the heyday of that company and the toys it made. Understand how these toys inspired generations of American engineers and scientists to follow their careers and build the industrial complex of this country. Watch the decline of this company and then its demise with insights into how sociological changes and poorly conceived products lead to that event. Written\, directed\, and photographed by Thomas B. Barker who has been a leading historian of The A. C. Gilbert Company for over 40 years and a filmmaker for over 60 years. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-Jan-18]

DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Child of Resistance (Haile Gerima\, U.S. 1972\, 36 min.\, 16mm)\, and Bush Mama (Haile Gerima\, U.S. 1975\, 96 min.\, 16mm). \nInspired by a dream Haile Gerima had after seeing Angela Davis handcuffed on television\, Child of Resistance is an abstract and symbolic film that follows a woman imprisoned as a result of her fight for social justice. \nBush Mama is Haile Gerima's powerfully moving look at the realities of inner city poverty and systemic disenfranchisement as experienced by Dorothy\, a pregnant welfare recipient in Watts\, played by the magnetic Barbara O. Jones. Motivated by the incarceration of her partner T. C. (Weathers) and the protection of her daughter and unborn child\, Dorothy undergoes an ideological transformation from apathy to action. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-18]

SUMMARY:Jane: An Abortion Service screening
DESCRIPTION:The Flying Squirrel will screen Jane: An Abortion Service (Kate Kirtz\, Nell Lundy\, U.S. 1995\, 60 min.) \nThis fascinating political look at a little-known chapter in women's history tells the story of "Jane"\, the Chicago-based women's health group who performed nearly 12\,000 safe illegal abortions between 1969 and 1973 with no formal medical training. As Jane members describe finding feminism and clients describe finding Jane\, archival footage and recreations mingle to depict how the repression of the early sixties and social movements of the late sixties influenced this unique group. Both vital knowledge and meditation on the process of empowerment\, Jane: An Abortion Service showcases the importance of preserving women's knowledge in the face of revisionist history. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-Jan-18]

SUMMARY:Cold Sweat 2.0 musical performance
DESCRIPTION:"Then there's a quartet like Rochester's Cold Sweat\, a straight-up\, straight-ahead blues band. Sure\, there are detours into Latin rhythms and rockabilly jump\, but this is a heavy\, rockin' blues quartet\, pure and simple. Obviously influenced by heavy blues cats like George Thorogood and Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Cold Sweat — Steve Casilio\, guitar and vocals; Ray Sciaratta\, bass and vocals; Mike Giugno\, drums; and the newest kid to the line-up\, Roger Reddy\, keyboards — exhibits little wasted flash in its execution. There are no histrionics\, the music does the talking. And Cold Sweat's bluesy chatter is rough-hewn and glass-pack raw\, due in part to Casilio's killer guitar tone and Sciaratta's lyrics…"-Frank De Blase\, City Newspaper 8/7/2013 \n [source: Bernunzio Uptown Music website\, 2016-Jan-18]

SUMMARY:Confessions Of A Nightingale theatrical performance (2016-Jan-22 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:He was one of the great twentieth century American playwrights\, and Tennessee Williams' private persona is shown to have been just as fascinating as his plays in this delightful\, moving\, and incisive ninety minute drama. The play is structured as an interview with a reporter\, to whose unheard questions Williams responds directly to the audience as if they are doing the asking. We learn of the struggles of his early years\, his first successes\, the price of his fame and his later years of dissolution and decline\, all in Williams' delightfully witty style. Part of the Rainbow Theater Festival. \n [source: Bread and Water Theatre website\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:The Amen Corner theatrical performance (2016-Jan-22 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of The Amen Corner\, a play by James Baldwin. \nJames Baldwin was an American author\, whose literary work spanned multiple genres\, including plays\, novels\, short stories and non-fiction. Baldwin's essays as collected in Notes of a Native Son (1955) explore palpable\, yet unspoken\, intricacies of racial\, sexual and class distinctions in western societies\, most notably in mid-twentieth century America. His work inspired a generation of people who sought a voice\, an analysis\, and an articulation of their humanity and peoplehood. The relevance of his work and the truths that flowed from his pen still resonates in a profound and poignant way even today. His influence on other major writers is seen\, most especially\, in the literature of Toni Morrison and August Wilson. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Jan-11]
