SUMMARY:It's a Wonderful Life screening (2017-Dec-10 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen It's a Wonderful Life (Frank Capra\, U.S. 1946\, 130 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Capra\, Holidays series. \nIn one of the most inspirational films of all time\, James Stewart and Donna Reed find their way through rough times in Bedford Falls (modeled after nearby Seneca Falls\, New York) by way of a loving\, dedicated relationship and a little heavenly intervention. As Stewart's and Capra's first work after their military service\, the film takes the postwar malaise often seen in film noir and turns it on its head\, constructing a narrative of faith and perseverance. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-4]

SUMMARY:Secrets of Spanish Florida — A Secrets of the Dead Special screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Secrets of Spanish Florida — A Secrets of the Dead Special (U.K. / U.S. 2017\, 56 min.) followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Donald Grinde. \nThe first permanent European settlement in the United States was founded in 1565—two generations before the settlements in Jamestown and Plymouth—not by English Protestants\, but by the Spanish and a melting pot of people they brought with them from Africa\, Italy\, Germany\, Ireland and even converted Jews\, who integrated almost immediately with the indigenous tribes. Secrets of Spanish Florida — A Secrets of the Dead Special uncovers one story of America's past that never made it into textbooks. Follow some of America's leading archaeologists\, maritime scientists\, and historians as they share the story of Florida's earliest settlers. It's a story that has taken more than 450 years to reveal. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Dec-4]

SUMMARY:Prelude to War\, The Nazis Strike\, Divide and Conquer film screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Prelude to War (Frank Capra\, U.S. 1942\, 51 min.\, 16mm)\, The Nazis Strike (Frank Capra\, Anatole Litvak\, U.S. 1943\, 40 min.\, 16mm)\, and Divide and Conquer (Frank Capra\, Anatole Litvak\, U.S. 1943\, 56 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Capra series. \nFrank Capra was one of the many Hollywood luminaries who felt it was their duty to enlist as soon as the United States officially entered World War II. As one of the most celebrated Hollywood filmmakers at that time\, and already in his mid-forties\, he was spared the front lines and assigned directly to U.S. Army Chief of Staff George Marshall. It was Marshall's idea for Capra to produce and direct a series of documentary propaganda films that would clearly explain to both the public and soldiers why U.S. involvement in the war was absolutely necessary\, as well as the values the United States and its allies were defending. The first three parts of the series known as Why We Fight explained the global geopolitical situation that led to World War II and covered the first military conquests of Nazi Germany. Prelude to War won an Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1942. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-4]

SUMMARY:Sho o suteyo MacHi e deyou (Throw Away Your Books\, Rally in the Streets) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sho o suteyo MacHi e deyou (Throw Away Your Books\, Rally in the Streets\, Shûji Terayama\, Japan 1971\, 137 min.\, 35mm\, Japanese w/ subtitles) as part of the Terayama series. \nShûji Terayama's debut feature Throw Away Your Books\, Rally in the Streets\, an adaptation of his eponymous novel and play\, is a playful\, energetic\, psychedelic\, visually hypnotic critique of contemporary Japanese society's descent into ruthless materialism. The story focuses on a teenager in hopeless search of identity within a highly dysfunctional family and a fractured world that both threaten to devour the boy—demanding everything and not really caring at all. A masterpiece of subversive cinema. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-4]

SUMMARY:Mr. Smith Goes to Washington screening (2017-Dec-14 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Frank Capra\, U.S. 1939\, 129 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Capra\, Holidays series. \nAnyone who equates "Capraesque" with "corny" or "naively idealistic" may be surprised by the clear-eyed\, pessimistic tone of this political comedy about a country rube turned U.S. senator (James Stewart) who singlehandedly faces down a corrupt political machine. After a prerelease screening in Washington\, it was condemned as being anti-American and pro-Communist. Guided by Capra's sure hand\, Stewart's performance—particularly his celebrated filibuster scene—made him a major star. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-11]
