SUMMARY:Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present screening
DESCRIPTION:VSW will screen Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present (Tyler Hubby\, U.S. 2016\, 96 min.) \nTony Conrad: Completely in the Present is a non-fiction film examining the pioneering life and works of artist\, musician\, and educator\, Tony Conrad. A great American artist of our time\, Conrad's films and compositions have playfully pushed the avant-garde in new directions\, profoundly influencing artists\, musicians and filmmakers since the early 1960s. Utilizing intimate footage of Conrad and his collaborators shot by the director over the last twenty-two years\, as well as Tony's own archive of recordings and films\, Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present mirrors Conrad's own playfully radical approach to art making. \n [source: VSW website\, 2017-Sep-18]

SUMMARY:Eyes of a Thief screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Eyes of a Thief (Najwa Najjar\, Occupied Palestinian Territory / France / Algeria 2014\, 98 min.) as part of the 2017 Witness Palestine Film Series. \nThe film is based on events in 2002 that took place in the valley between Nablus and Ramallah which gives the film its name. Ten years after being hospitalized during opening scenes of confusion\, which the rest of the film unpacks\, water engineer Tareq (Egyptian actor Khaled Abol Naga) emerges from an Israeli prison in the West Bank. He returns to his family home in search of his missing wife and daughter. He soon finds that his wife is dead\, and he is determined to find if his daughter is alive. Through flashbacks\, the audience learns that his character is harboring a dark secret. Najjar is using this psychological thriller to explore a range of themes which are at once highly specific — the particular social conditions at work in a territory under occupation\, and how such conditions affect people — and universal\, since Najjar\, like other members of the current crop of Palestinian film makers\, is more interested in those people than she is in creating political propaganda. None of the characters are mere ideological mouthpieces\, and nobody is all sinner or saint\, Tareq least of all. One of Najjar's aims is to make audiences reflect upon the fine line separating resistance from terrorism. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Sep-18]

SUMMARY:Occupation of the American Mind screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Occupation of the American Mind (Loretta Alper\, Jeremy Earp\, U.S. 2016\, 85 min.) as part of the 2017 Witness Palestine Film Series. \nIsrael's ongoing military occupation of Palestinian territory and repeated invasions of the Gaza strip have triggered a fierce backlash against Israeli policies virtually everywhere in the world – except the United States. A CNN/ORC poll\, conducted in July of 2014 showed that only four in 10 Americans believed that Israel was using too much force against the population of Gaza. The Occupation of the American Mind takes an eye-opening look at this critical exception\, zeroing in on pro-Israel public relations efforts within the U.S. Narrated by Roger Waters and featuring leading observers of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and U.S. media culture\, the film explores how the Israeli government\, the U.S. government\, and the pro-Israel lobby have joined forces\, often with very different motives\, to shape American media coverage of the conflict in Israel's favor. From the U.S.-based public relations campaigns that emerged in the 1980s to today\, the film provides a sweeping analysis of Israel's decades-long battle for the hearts\, minds\, and tax dollars of the American people in the face of widening international condemnation of its increasingly right-wing policies. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Sep-18]
