SUMMARY:American Madness screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen American Madness (Frank Capra\, U.S. 1932\, 75 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Capra series. \nIn the pre-FDR days of the Great Depression\, a good-hearted bank president\, played by screen legend Walter Huston\, strives to keep his business solvent for the "little people" who rely upon it. One of Frank Capra's unsung\, pre-Code gems\, this is also one of the most fast-paced and significant of 1930s social dramas. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Nov-13]

SUMMARY:Rocky screening (2017-Nov-24 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Rocky (John G. Avildsen\, U.S. 1976\, 120 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Holidays series. \nRocky Balboa is a Philadelphia club fighter who seems to be going nowhere. But when fate puts him in the ring with a world heavyweight champion\, Rocky knows that it's his one shot at the big time. Along the way\, he finds his true love at a should-be Thanksgiving dinner. Brainchild of ambitious screenwriter and star Sylvester Stallone\, this sleeper hit appeared out of nowhere to receive ten Oscar nominations\, winning three (including Best Picture and Best Director against such heavyweight contenders as All the President's Men\, Network\, and Taxi Driver)\, and mutate into one of the most famous\, profitable\, and beloved international film franchises of all times. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Nov-20]

SUMMARY:Topaz screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Topaz (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.S. 1969\, 128 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Hitchcock in Winter series. \nHitchcock's second venture into the murky world of Cold War espionage is an elaborate yarn of a French intelligence officer who becomes involved both in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and then plays a key role in breaking up an international Soviet spy ring. Unhappy with the experience of working with two superstars on his previous spy thriller (Paul Newman and Julie Andrews in Torn Curtain)\, Hitchcock surrounded himself with a top-notch international cast of slightly less known but equally talented actors\, such as Frederick Stafford\, Michel Piccoli\, and Philippe Noiret. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Nov-20]

SUMMARY:Rocky screening (2017-Nov-26 @ 2 p.m.)

SUMMARY:I Am Not Your Negro screening (2017-Nov-27 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen I Am Not Your Negro (Raoul Peck\, Switzerland / France / Belgium / U.S. 2016\, 95 min.) followed by a panel discussion led by Kevin Hicks with Gary Dewitt Marshall\, Omobowale Ayorinde\, and Debora McDell Hernandez as part of the Indie Lens Pop-Up series. \nIn 1979\, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his new endeavour: the writing of his final book\, Remember This House\, recounting the lives and successive assassinations of his friends Medgar Evers\, Malcolm X\, and Martin Luther King\, Jr. Baldwin was not able to complete the book before his death\, and the unfinished manuscript was entrusted to director Raoul Peck (Moloch Tropical\, Murder in Pacot) by the writer's estate. Built exclusively around Baldwin's words\, Peck's I Am Not Your Negro delves into the complex legacy of three lives (and deaths) that permanently marked the American social and political landscape. Framing the unfinished work as a radical narration about race in America\, Peck matches Baldwin's lyrical rhetoric with rich archival footage of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements\, and connects these historical struggles for justice and equality to the present-day movements that have taken shape in response to the killings of young African-American men including Trayvon Martin\, Tamir Rice\, Mike Brown\, and Amir Brooks. Exploring what it means to be Black in America today\, Peck reflects on the legacy of racial violence that still permeates the country. In Baldwin's words\, "You cannot lynch me and keep me in ghettos without becoming something monstrous yourselves. And furthermore\, you give me a terrifying advantage: you never had to look at me; I had to look at you. I know more about you than you know about me. Not everything that is faced can be changed\, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." By revealing the deep connections between past and present injustice\, I Am Not Your Negro weaves an epic narrative about America's irrational relationship with skin colour — a relationship that would be absurd were it not so tragic. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Nov-22]
