SUMMARY:Popiól i diament (Ashes and Diamonds) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Popiól i diament (Ashes and Diamonds\, Andrzej Wajda\, Poland 1958\, 103 min.\, 35mm\, English w/subtitles) as part of the Wajda series. \nWajda's first bona fide masterpiece and the conclusion of his informal "war trilogy\," Ashes and Diamonds bravely depicts the uneasy Polish political realities in the immediate aftermath of the World War II. The protagonist of the film is a former Home Army soldier Maciek\, now tasked with assassinating a high-ranking communist leader. But instead of a straightforward thriller\, Wajda delivers a proper film noir\, and at the same time a uniquely bleak\, socialist riff on disturbed-youth classics such as Rebel Without a Cause or The Wild One. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Oct-16]

SUMMARY:Artist's Reception\, HOAG/25 Years
DESCRIPTION:The Dyer Arts Center at NTID will host an Artist's Reception for HOAG/25 Years\, celebrating the 25th anniversary of William "Lee" Hoag's first art show. It is on display through November 18. \nHoag's first exhibit\, "Eleven: Recent Mixed-Media Sculptures from Bill Hoag\," debuted in 1992 in what was the White Room Gallery at the downtown Rochester nightclub Carpe Diem. Today\, it's the location of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. Hoag is the son of Ralph Hoag\, who worked in the U.S. Department of Education under former presidents Kennedy and Johnson and played an instrumental role in the establishment of NTID. The elder Hoag was also a former superintendent of the Rochester School for the Deaf. William "Lee" Hoag\, who lives and works in Rochester\, is a 1992 graduate of RIT's Master of Science for Teachers in visual arts-all grades (art education) program and recently retired after a long career as a sign-language interpreter. He was formerly artist-in-residence at Freiluftgalerie Stotteritz in Germany and his artwork has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout Rochester and the region. He lectures locally and has been featured in several publications including City Newspaper\, Lake Effect Magazine\, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle and Chenango Valley News. He has also had commissioned artwork displayed at Highland Park and Village Gate Square and he has won several grants and awards for his pieces. \n [source: NTID website\, 2017-Oct-16]

SUMMARY:An Evening of Mystery and Mayhem featuring The Black Bird of Death
DESCRIPTION:Do you love 1940s dramas and lm [sic] noir? Then mark your calendar! The Maltese Falcon\, Casablanca\, and other cinematic classics serve as the inspiration for The Black Bird of Death\, a sidesplitting mystery-themed reception and dinner to be hosted by the Eastman Museum Council. The evening will start at 6 p.m. with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the museum's Potter Peristyle\, where guests will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with an exceedingly curious cast of colorful characters. Dinner will follow in George Eastman's Conservatory in the historic mansion. But be forewarned\, your fine dining will be accompanied by—murder! The ensuing performance by the Mystery Company and associated mayhem will include all the hallmarks of a true detective thriller as well as the hilarity of a good comedy. Guests will be asked to help solve the "crime" and identify the murderer. The Black Bird of Death is a well-crafted spoof of hard-boiled detective thrillers and film noir including unlikely romantic attachments. This interactive whodunit will keep everyone guessing and laughing. Period attire from the 1940s or black-and- white cocktail attire of today is encouraged. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Oct-16]

DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen In Dubious Battle (James Franco\, U.S. 2016\, 110 min.\, DCP) as part of the Labor Film Series. \nThe first of John Steinbeck's dustbowl novels\, In Dubious Battle chronicles the struggle of migrant apple-pickers for decent wages and better working conditions. A native of California's central valley\, Steinbeck understood well the conflict between itinerant workers\, led by Wobblies and Communists\, and the wealthy growers.
