SUMMARY:Kimi no na wa. (Your Name.) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Kimi no na wa. (Your Name.\, Makoto Shinkai\, Japan 2016\, 106 min.\, DCP\, Japanese w/subtitles) as part of the Voyages and Discoveries series. \n"Treasure the experience; dreams fade when you wake up." A dazzling body-swap romance filled with pathos\, longing\, and separation\, this recent anime is visually stunning\, at once very simple and extremely complex\, with charming characterizations and beautiful imagery. Taki and Mitsuha are Japanese students in different locations\, who find that from time to time they wake up having swapped bodies. As they try to unravel why this is happening\, they start leaving messages and instructions for each other\, resulting in a bizarre\, intense\, and unique friendship—a literal example of looking at the world with "new eyes." Gradually\, the mystery behind their connection becomes more and more complex. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Dec-2]

SUMMARY:Christof Irniger Pilgrim musical performance
DESCRIPTION:The quintet Pilgrim\, founded by Zurich based tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger\, has become over the years one of the most exciting ensembles in young European Jazz. After the highly praised group's latest studio recording 'Italian Circus Story'\, Pilgrim — driven by enthusiasm and inventiveness — presents the vibrant live album 'Big Wheel'. Pilgrim plays full of verve\, with plenty of room for spontaneity and improvisation and demonstrates on these recordings impressively their pulsating music. Pilgrim's approach needs to prove itself over and again\, and has to constantly develop — The Big Wheel. On the continuum of intentionally persecuting something pre-planned and letting it happen the group clearly and strongly tends to the latter. It leaves each member in a state of mutual trust in each other's originality and experience. The accompanying soundtrack oscillates between enigmatic reflection and wild eruptions\, although the band creates a dense\, all-round sound which is hard to categorise. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2019-Dec-2]

DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Le crime de Monsieur Lange (The Crime of Monsieur Lange\, Jean Renoir\, France 1936\, 77 min.\, DCP\, French w/subtitles) as part of the Labor Film Series. \n"The most humane film ever made about killing your boss" is how one reviewer describes this film. Though not as well known as other Renoir films—the Grand Illusion (1937)\, Rules of the Game (1939)\, The River (1951)—the Crime of Monsieur Lange was much admired by Orson Welles\, who considered Renoir the greatest of all directors. Welles called this an "astonishing\, excusable-homicide comedy-drama." It is also among the earliest cinematic depictions of worker control. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Dec-2]

SUMMARY:Kiss Kiss Bang Bang screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Shane Black\, U.S. 2005\, 103 min.\, 35mm) as part of the A Very Shane Black Christmas series. \nShane Black took the director's seat for the first time in his own adaptation of the 1941 Mike Shayne mystery novel Bodies Are Where You Find Them by Brett Halliday. Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr. are a private detective and an accidental actor\, respectively\, as they find themselves thrown together while Downey is conducting on-the-job research for an upcoming role. When Downey reunites with his middle-school crush\, who asks him to find her missing sister\, he relies on Kilmer to help him solve the mystery. Helmed with a tongue-in-cheek neo-noir pastiche\, this action-comedy provided the perfect platform for Downey to restart his career. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Dec-2]

SUMMARY:The Sound of Music screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Sound of Music (Robert Wise\, U.S. 1965\, 172 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Canon series. \nSweeping helicopter shots owe everything to this widescreen film as the Austrian countryside fills the screen and Julie Andrews's voice fills our ears. This enduring story of a novice turned nanny who wins the hearts of her charges—and their father—while outrunning the burgeoning Nazi threat remains one of the defining works in American film. The songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein are deceptively simple\, reflecting the attitudes of the children\, yet carry sentiments that ring throughout the years. The film was adapted from a stage show that greatly limited the soaring vistas and elegant cinematography evident on the big screen. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Dec-2]
