SUMMARY:La La Land screening (2017-Apr-9 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen La La Land (Damien Chazelle\, U.S. / Hong Kong 2016\, 128 min.) "Mia\, an aspiring actress\, serves lattes to movie stars in between auditions and Sebastian\, a jazz musician\, scrapes by playing cocktail party gigs in dingy bars\, but as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair\, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart." SUMMARY:Histoire(s) du cinéma screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Histoire(s) du cinéma (Jean-Luc Godard\, France 1989—98\, digital\, 266 min.\, French w/subtitles) as part of the Holocaust: Affect and Absence series. \nJean-Luc Godard transformed the face of cinema with his prolific\, influential\, and revolutionary body of work (Breathless\, Weekend\, and Contempt\, to name just a few). But Histoire(s) du cinéma is probably the towering achievement of a singular creative career spanning sixty years. Made over a decade\, Histoire(s) du cinéma is an extraordinary look at the medium through the eyes of this unique filmmaker. Hugely ambitious in scope\, the series covers a wide range of topics from the birth of cinema to Hollywood to Italian neorealism and beyond. A dazzling montage of sight and sound\, Histoire(s) du cinéma features a diverse array of film extracts\, the voices of—among others—Juliette Binoche and Alfred Hitchcock\, and an eclectic music soundtrack ranging from Beethoven to Leonard Cohen. It ultimately boils down to a bitter indictment of the medium that has\, according to Godard\, betrayed its historical promise because it failed to confront the horror of the Holocaust by recording its images. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-3]

SUMMARY:Brute Force screening (2017-Apr-10 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Brute Force (Jules Dassin\, U.S. 1947\, 98 min.\, 35mm) as part of the 12 Postcards from Prison series. \nIn this atmospheric film noir from the director of Rififi and The Naked City\, Burt Lancaster plays tough-hearted Joe Collins\, a prisoner locked up in a penitentiary under the watch of cruelly sadistic Captain Munsey (Hume Cronyn). Fed-up with Munsey's fascistic tactics\, Collins plans the ultimate escape\, putting both his and his fellow prisoners' lives at stake. Though its portrayal of violence may pale in comparison to films today\, Brute Force maintains its position as one of the first honest and revealing portraits of prisoner hardships. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Mar-27]

SUMMARY:Spotlight screening\, reception\, discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Curtis Theatre in the George Eastman Museum will host a Reception prior to the screening of Spotlight (Tom McCarthy\, U.S./Canada 2015\, 128 min.\, DCP) in the Dryden. The screening will be followed by a Panel Discussion of child abuse in partnership with Bivona Child Advocacy Center moderated by Todd Butler. \nUnder the direction of new editor Marty Baron (Liev Schreiber)\, the Boston Globe's elite investigative team\, known as Spotlight\, is tasked with delving into decades' worth of child-abuse claims against the Catholic Church. Led by Walter "Robby" Robinson (Michael Keaton)\, the journalists begin to uncover a massive scandal involving sexual abuse and the willful ignorance perpetrated by the Church within the city of Boston. Facing political opposition and resistance from the far-reaching in uence of the Church\, the reporters put together an explosive exposé on a corrupt system. Based on the true events of the 2002 investigation by the Globe\, the star-studded Spotlight also features Rachel McAdams\, Mark Ruffalo\, John Slattery\, Billy Crudup\, and Stanley Tucci. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-3]

SUMMARY:Sacred screening\, discussion with Bill Baker
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Sacred (Thomas Lennon\, U.S. / Japan / France / Canada / Spain / India / Netherlands / Philippines / Russia / Poland / China / Israel / Egypt / Pakistan / Ukraine / Peru / Lebanon / Nepal / Kenya / Haiti / Saudi Arabia / Ethiopia / Myanmar / Madagascar / Sierra Leone / Botswana 2016\, 87 min.) followed by a discussion with executive producer Bill Baker as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nShot by more than 40 filmmaking teams around the world\, the film immerses the viewer in the daily use of faith and spiritual practice. At a time when religious hatreds dominate the world's headlines\, this film explores faith as primary human experience: how people turn to ritual and prayer to navigate the milestones and crises of private life. The film's director commissioned or sourced footage from top independent filmmakers from more than 25 countries — and a wide range of religious traditions — each team contributing a single scene. The film\, sweeping in its global reach\, yet intensely intimate\, is a tour de force that unifies these scenes into a single work\, told without narration\, without experts and\, for long stretches\, without words at all. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Apr-7]

SUMMARY:Shock Corridor screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Shock Corridor (Samuel Fuller\, U.S. 1963\, 88 min.\, 35mm) as part of the 12 Postcards from Prison series. \nJohnny Barrett\, a reporter obsessed with winning a Pulitzer Prize\, goes undercover in a mental hospital in order to solve a murder\, only to cross the line between sanity and madness. This is a film of literal and psychological interiors\, a striking presentation of Fuller's storytelling. His combination of a bold use of footage shot for other films and a variety of rule-breaking visual effects (intense close-ups\, shock cutting\, inexplicable camera movements) made Shock Corridor one of the most audacious B-movies of the 1960s. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-3]

SUMMARY:Shock Corridor screening (2017-Apr-11 @ 7:30 p.m.)

SUMMARY:The Maelstrom: A Family Chronicle\, Aufschub (Respite) screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Maelstrom: A Family Chronicle (Péter Forgács\, Netherlands 1997\, 60 min.\, digital\, Dutch w/subtitles)\, and Aufschub (Respite\, Harun Farocki\, Germany/Netherlands 2007\, 39 min.\, digital). \nThe Maelstrom makes extraordinarily artful use of a considerable cache of home movies shot in the Netherlands before and during World War II. Information is conveyed through subtitles and a soundtrack of period sound—mostly radio broadcasts—and brooding\, disturbing jazz by Tibor SzemzÅ'. We see a Jewish family first living unknowingly in the shadow of the Holocaust and then trying to cope with it\, still unaware of what it will finally mean. A shot of the film's photographer\, Max Peereboom\, and his family cheerfully sewing and doing general preparation for a trip to a "work camp"—when their destination was the nightmare of Auschwitz—adds a devastating dimension to our understanding that no Hollywood movie\, no other documentary\, has been able to provide. Respite consists of silent black-and-white films shot at Westerbork\, a Dutch refugee camp established in 1939 for Jews fleeing Germany. In 1942\, after the occupation of Holland\, its function was reversed by the Nazis and it became a "transit camp." In 1944\, the camp commander commissioned a film\, shot by a prisoner\, photographer Rudolf Breslauer. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-3]
