SUMMARY:Sacred screening\, discussion with Bill Baker
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Sacred (Thomas Lennon\, U.S. / Japan / France / Canada / Spain / India / Netherlands / Philippines / Russia / Poland / China / Israel / Egypt / Pakistan / Ukraine / Peru / Lebanon / Nepal / Kenya / Haiti / Saudi Arabia / Ethiopia / Myanmar / Madagascar / Sierra Leone / Botswana 2016\, 87 min.) followed by a discussion with executive producer Bill Baker as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nShot by more than 40 filmmaking teams around the world\, the film immerses the viewer in the daily use of faith and spiritual practice. At a time when religious hatreds dominate the world's headlines\, this film explores faith as primary human experience: how people turn to ritual and prayer to navigate the milestones and crises of private life. The film's director commissioned or sourced footage from top independent filmmakers from more than 25 countries — and a wide range of religious traditions — each team contributing a single scene. The film\, sweeping in its global reach\, yet intensely intimate\, is a tour de force that unifies these scenes into a single work\, told without narration\, without experts and\, for long stretches\, without words at all. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Apr-7]

SUMMARY:James Hard: The Last Surviving Combat Civil War Veteran
DESCRIPTION:James Hard was the nation's last surviving Union Combat Veteran of the Civil War. Hard was a Rochester New York icon through the 1940s and early 50s. He was well over 100 years old and his picture was in the local papers just about every week. Back in the 1950s\, everyone knew who James Hard was. Now only a few people past 70 can remember him. It's time to honor the old man once again. \n [source: Rochester City Newspaper events calendar\, 2017-Apr-5]

SUMMARY:Shock Corridor screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Shock Corridor (Samuel Fuller\, U.S. 1963\, 88 min.\, 35mm) as part of the 12 Postcards from Prison series. \nJohnny Barrett\, a reporter obsessed with winning a Pulitzer Prize\, goes undercover in a mental hospital in order to solve a murder\, only to cross the line between sanity and madness. This is a film of literal and psychological interiors\, a striking presentation of Fuller's storytelling. His combination of a bold use of footage shot for other films and a variety of rule-breaking visual effects (intense close-ups\, shock cutting\, inexplicable camera movements) made Shock Corridor one of the most audacious B-movies of the 1960s. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-3]

SUMMARY:The Maelstrom: A Family Chronicle\, Aufschub (Respite) screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Maelstrom: A Family Chronicle (Péter Forgács\, Netherlands 1997\, 60 min.\, digital\, Dutch w/subtitles)\, and Aufschub (Respite\, Harun Farocki\, Germany/Netherlands 2007\, 39 min.\, digital). \nThe Maelstrom makes extraordinarily artful use of a considerable cache of home movies shot in the Netherlands before and during World War II. Information is conveyed through subtitles and a soundtrack of period sound—mostly radio broadcasts—and brooding\, disturbing jazz by Tibor SzemzÅ'. We see a Jewish family first living unknowingly in the shadow of the Holocaust and then trying to cope with it\, still unaware of what it will finally mean. A shot of the film's photographer\, Max Peereboom\, and his family cheerfully sewing and doing general preparation for a trip to a "work camp"—when their destination was the nightmare of Auschwitz—adds a devastating dimension to our understanding that no Hollywood movie\, no other documentary\, has been able to provide. Respite consists of silent black-and-white films shot at Westerbork\, a Dutch refugee camp established in 1939 for Jews fleeing Germany. In 1942\, after the occupation of Holland\, its function was reversed by the Nazis and it became a "transit camp." In 1944\, the camp commander commissioned a film\, shot by a prisoner\, photographer Rudolf Breslauer. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-3]

SUMMARY:Cool Hand Luke screening (2017-Apr-13 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Cool Hand Luke (Stuart Rosenberg\, U.S. 1967\, 126 min.\, 35mm) as part of the 12 Postcards from Prison series. \nIn this film about prison life and undying spirit\, Paul Newman is Luke\, a loner sent to a chain-gang camp for "cutting heads off parking meters." For his fellow chain-gangers\, Luke offers inspiration\, whether it's digging ditches all night long or eating 50 eggs to win a bet with Oscar winner George Kennedy. First-time feature director Rosenberg's exciting staging and Conrad Hall's superb color photography make a traditional subject—life on a Southern chain gang—seem fresh\, and Newman gives one of his best "loner" roles as the title convict. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-10]

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Unforeseen Structures
DESCRIPTION:At the Flower City Arts Center is the Opening Reception for Unforeseen Structures by Mitch Goldstein\, on display through May 20. \nUnforeseen Structures is artist Mitch Goldstein's examination of emergent form using darkroom photography techniques\, specifically the photogram. Photograms use no cameras or lenses — instead\, objects are placed on or near unexposed photographic paper and briefly exposed to light. This process results in abstract black and white compositions\, which emerge unpredictably from the physical materials used in their creation. Goldstein relinquishes control\, relying instead on intuition and chance to allow form and structure to develop from the process. \n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2017-Apr-10]

SUMMARY:The Illinois Parables screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Illinois Parables (Deborah Stratman\, U.S. 2016\, 60 min.\, 16mm) followed by a discussion with filmmaker Deborah Stratman. \nAn experimental documentary made up of regional vignettes about faith\, force\, technology\, and exodus. Eleven chapters relay histories of settlement\, removal\, technological breakthrough\, violence\, messianism\, and resistance—all occurring in Illinois. The state is a convenient structural ruse\, its histories becoming allegories to explore how humans are shaped by conviction and ideology. The film uses reenactment\, archival footage\, observational shooting\, intertitles\, and voiceover to tell its stories\, and it is an extension of Stratman's previous works in which she questions foundational American tenets. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-10]
