SUMMARY:Books Sandwiched-In: Veronica Volk reviews "The Death and Life of the Great Lakes" by Dan Egan
DESCRIPTION:In the Kate Gleason Auditorium of the Bausch and Lomb Library Building\, Veronica Volk will present a Books Sandwiched-In review of The Death and Life of the Great Lakes by Dan Egan. \nThe Death and Life of the Great Lakes is prize-winning reporter Dan Egan's assessment of factors that jeopardize the health of the Great Lakes\, and an outline of ways we can restore and preserve them. According to the journalism collaborative Great Lakes Today\, Hurricanes Harvey and Irma serve as a warning for cities to the north – such as Rochester – as climate change is expected to increase the number of storms crossing the country. \n [source: Friends & Foundation of the RPL e-mail\, 2017-Sep-14]

SUMMARY:Within the Quota theatrical performance
DESCRIPTION:TableTopOpera will perform Within the Quota in the Dryden Theatre. \nThe United States may be a nation of immigrants\, but it is also a nation of quotas. For more than a century\, Congress has imposed laws to control the influx of immigrants. Written between 1922 and 1923\, the ballet Within the Quota by Gerald Murphy and Cole Porter is a biting critique of the Emergency Quota Act (1921). TableTopOpera's new arrangement juxtaposes images and film clips from Porter's time with material pertaining to current US immigration policies and their effects on the nation. \n [source: George Eastman Museum \, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:Secret Agent screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Secret Agent (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.K. 1936\, 86 min.\, 16mm) as part of the WWI series. \nComing immediately on the heels of Hitchcock's early masterpiece The 39 Steps\, this adaptation of two spy stories by W. Somerset Maugham is an unfairly overlooked entry in the master's British filmography (that The Lady Vanishes comes soon after doesn't help). Judged on its own merits\, this film is a taut and twisty thriller about a WWI-era novelist turned secret agent (John Gielgud) who is given a new identity\, a deadly assistant (Peter Lorre)\, and a beautiful\, thrill-seeking "wife" (Madeleine Carroll\, arguably the coolest of Hitch's cool\, elegant blondes). \n [source: George Eastman Museum \, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:Joey Molland musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Badfinger was the most successful recording act ever signed to The Beatles' label\, Apple Records. Joey Molland joined the original lineup of Pete Ham\, Tommy Evans and Mike Gibbins in late 1969 when The Iveys transformed into Badfinger. The group would go on to produce such Top 10 hits as "Come and Get It"\, "No Matter What"\, "Day After Day"\, "Baby Blue" (featured in the series finale of Breaking Bad) and "Without You" — a song covered by both Nilsson (1972) and Mariah Carey (1994)\, both of which went to #1. The band interacted in various ways with each member of The Beatles\, including their solo careers. Paul McCartney wrote and produced the band's first single — "Come and Get It". Joey and Tommy played acoustic guitars on John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" and "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier\, Momma" on his Imagine Lp. Pete and Tommy lent backup vocals on Ringo Starr's "It Don't Come Easy". And the entire original Badfinger lineup contributed to George Harrison's landmark triple-Lp set\, "All Things Must Pass" and the equally groundbreaking fundraising event\, Concert for Bangladesh. Expect to hear some exclusive\, "behind the scenes" stories while attending a Joey Molland solo performance! \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:On Beauty screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen On Beauty (Joanna Rudnick\, U.S. 2017\, 32 min.) followed by a discussion with film subject Rick Guidotti. \nThe documentary\, from Emmy-nominated "In The Family" filmmaker Joanna Rudnick and Chicago's Kartemquin Films\, follows fashion photographer Rick Guidotti\, who left the fashion world when he grew frustrated with having to work within the restrictive parameters of the industry's standard of beauty. SUMMARY:The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp screening (2017-Sep-21 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (Michael Powell\, Emeric Pressburger\, U.K. 1943\, 159 min.\, 35mm) as part of the WWI series. \nFamous for being the film that infuriated Winston Churchill\, this gorgeously shot satirical view of British military life traces the consequences of political ignorance and emotional blockage from the Boer War to Hitler\, with the density and structure of an epic novel. Deborah Kerr shines in perhaps her best role\, as three different women in a long and adventurous life of a professional soldier Clive Candy (equally great Roger Livesey). \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Sep-18]

SUMMARY:Birth of a Movement screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Birth of a Movement (Bestor Cram\, Susan Gray\, U.S. 2017\, 56 min.) \nIn 1915\, Boston-based African American newspaper editor and activist William M. Trotter waged a battle against D.W. Griffith's technically groundbreaking but notoriously Ku Klux Klan-friendly The Birth of a Nation\, unleashing a fight that still rages today about race relations\, media representation\, and the power and influence of Hollywood. Birth of a Movement\, based on Dick Lehr's book The Birth of a Movement: How Birth of a Nation Ignited the Battle for Civil Rights\, captures the backdrop to this prescient clash between human rights\, freedom of speech\, and a changing media landscape. Griffith originally titled his three-hour epic The Clansman\, based on a novel and play of the same name\, but changed it to The Birth of a Nation to reflect the director's belief his work gave the true story of America's "Reconstruction." Set during the Civil War\, it was told from a point of view sympathetic to the Confederacy\, and its portrayal of African American men was controversial even then\, painting them as unintelligent and sexually aggressive\, while members of the KKK were shown as valiant heroes protecting the innocent. (The film's release led to a spike in membership for the Klan.) Birth of a Nation was one of the first motion pictures screened at the White House\, and white film audiences made it a box office hit\, but in each city it traveled to it was also met with protests by African Americans\, including by the newly formed NAACP which attempted to ban the film. These protests were led by Trotter\, the first African American Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard University and editor of The Guardian newspaper. A Northern intellectual and contemporary of W.E.B. Dubois\, Trotter was positioning himself as a leading voice in a fractured civil rights movement. Birth of a Movement features interviews with Spike Lee (whose NYU student film The Answer was a response to Griffith's film)\, Reginald Hudlin\, DJ Spooky\, Henry Louis Gates\, Jr.\, and Dick Lehr\, while exploring how Griffith's film — long taught in film classes as an innovative work of genius — motivated generations of African American filmmakers and artists as they worked to reclaim their history and their onscreen image. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Aug-28]
