SUMMARY:Steam Trains Return to Rochester (2017-Aug-20 @ 10 a.m.)
DESCRIPTION:If you've heard of Thomas the Tank Engineâ„¢\, this is his real life cousin! For the first time since 1955\, the hills will once again echo with steam whistles when the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum hosts real steam train rides on August 19-20 and 26-27. The museum will host Viscose Co. No. 6\, a vintage steam locomotive that once operated for the American Viscose Co. in Roanoke\, Virginia. Enjoy a ride in our new open-air touring car so you can experience all the sights and sounds of the steam locomotive as it works hard to pull against the steep grades. Seats are also available inside our caboose if you prefer a quieter ride. Thanks to the cooperation of the neighboring New York Museum of Transportation\, visitors will be able to enjoy an extended two-mile round trip through our bucolic museum grounds. Live entertainment will be provided by banjo player Mike Kornrich. Visitors will also enjoy a live blacksmithing demonstration while they tour our museum exhibits and our large collection of historic trains. Refreshments will be available for purchase\, including a full grill menu. Our museum gift shop is stocked with many railroad souvenirs for any train buff. \n [source: Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum website\, 2017-Aug-14]

SUMMARY:The Bad and the Beautiful screening (2017-Aug-20 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Bad and the Beautiful (Vincente Minnelli\, U.S. 1952\, 118 min.\, 35mm) as part of the National Endowment for the Arts series. \nWith characters loosely based on Hollywood players such as David O. Selznick\, Diana Barrymore\, and Val Lewton\, The Bad and the Beautiful hits home in the backstage drama department. Bolstered by Minnelli's clear\, insightful direction and a first-rate cast—Kirk Douglas\, Dick Powell\, Gloria Grahame\, Gilbert Roland\, and Lana Turner in probably her best performance ever—the film peels back the complicated layers of one producer's life and work and the love/hate relationships that sustain him. Selfishness\, generosity\, and psychological manipulation are all just tricks of the movie business trade. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Aug-14]

SUMMARY:Movie Crazy screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Movie Crazy (Clyde Bruckman\, Harold Lloyd\, U.S. 1932\, 84 min.\, 35mm) as part of the National Endowment for the Arts series. \nHarold Lloyd was one of the few stars to successfully make the leap from the silent screen to talkies and Movie Crazy is frequently cited as his best sound picture. The film tells the story of a small-town bumpkin who dreams of becoming a famous actor. After a series of mix-ups\, the would-be movie star is summoned to Hollywood for a screen test. Once there\, he proceeds to wreak havoc on the studio lot\, fall in love with the same girl twice\, and of course\, catch the eye of the studio head who reluctantly recognizes his comic genius. This film showcases Lloyd's magical charm and further establishes the actor as one of the greats of early screen comedy. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Aug-14]

SUMMARY:Saratoga screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Saratoga (Jack Conway\, U.S. 1937\, 92 min.\, 35mm) as part of the National Endowment for the Arts series. \nThis horse-racing comedy is best remembered today for the death of its star\, Jean Harlow. Only 26 at the time\, Harlow collapsed on the set of the film and died shortly thereafter. Shooting was completed with a stand-in\, cleverly shot from afar or behind hats\, and the film was released a mere seven weeks after Harlow's death. Despite the tragic history of the production\, the film became one of 1937's biggest successes. Saratoga also stars Clark Gable as a charming bookie and Lionel Barrymore as Harlow's grandfather. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Aug-14]
