Researching the Daguerreotype is on display through February 29\, 2016.  \nIn 1839\, Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre unveiled one of the world's first successful photographic mediums: the daguerreotype. The process transformed the human experience by providing a means to capture light and record people\, places\, and events. The University of Rochester is leading groundbreaking nanotechnology research that explores the extraordinary qualities of this photographic process. A new exhibition in Rush Rhees Library showcases the results of this research\, while bridging the gap between the sciences and the humanities. DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Snow White (J. Searle Dawley\, U.S. 1916\, 73 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli.  \nParamount Pictures' first special Christmas release was this legendary and long-thought-lost version of Snow White starring Marguerite Clark\, who had played the part on Broadway. Clark's popularity in the 1910s rivaled Mary Pickford's\, but almost all of Clark's films (unlike Pickford's) are lost today. This enchanting film was the direct inspiration for Walt Disney's 1937 version\, and such was Disney's enthusiasm and respect for the earlier telling that he brought Clark to the Hollywood premiere of his film. In this 1916 version\, the interior sets were brought from the Broadway production to the New York studio and made even more fanciful. DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Het Witt Kasteel (White Castle\, Johan van der Keuken\, Netherlands 1973\, 78 min.\, 16mm\, Dutch w/ subtitles).  \nIn the second installment of Johan van der Keuken's North-South trilogy\, the rhythmic interplay of documentary sequences produces a sordid image of the First World. Segments depicting migrant laborers at work in the Netherlands\, tourists off the coast of Spain\, and disenfranchised youth outside Columbus\, Ohio\, intertwine to reveal both the effects of and the complex relationships within global capitalism. In contrast to many documentaries of its time\, The White Castle is more poetic than political. SUMMARY:S. Blazier Quartet musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Swiss trombonist S. Blazier first played the Bop Shop in 2008 as a member of the improvising trio Animal Forum. Talking with him\, he mentioned he was just coming out with the first release under his own name\, Seventh Heaven on Between the Lines. We heard it\, liked it and made tentative plans to book him in the future. Although we made several attempts to connect\, we were unable to link up due to schedules. That is\, until now\, 7 years later. But in that time\, Blazier has gone from strength to strength releasing a number of strong recordings with his quartet\, trio\, a series of duo recordings (including one with Swiss proto free jazz drummer Pierre Favre) and two recordings with his group Consort In Motion\, a group that interprets pre-Bach music with a modernist's twist and included the great drummer Paul Motian as a member. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2015-Dec-7]
