SUMMARY:Lunafest 2015/16
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen short films from Lunafest 2015/16 after a Wine and Cheese Reception. \nThe 2015/16 Lunafest includes six films which will compel discussion\, make you laugh\, tug at your heartstrings and motivate you to make a difference. Incredibly diverse in style and content\, Lunafest is united by a common thread of exceptional storytelling — by\, for and about women. Funds raised from the Lunafest screening will enable Girls on the Run of Greater Rochester to continue to secure program materials\, supplies\, improve outreach to underserved populations and provide scholarships to ensure that all girls have the chance to participate in this transformational program. Additionally\, a portion of the funds raised through this film festival will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund. 100 percent of all net proceeds are donated to charity. Tickets will be available for purchase online at littletheater.org and at Little's box offices. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Oct-5]

SUMMARY:Wet-Plate Collodion Photography demonstration with Jenn Libby
DESCRIPTION:What is wet-plate collodion photography? Invented in 1851\, it is one of the oldest photographic processes\, and it is experiencing a revival in the 21st century. In this class you will learn how a wet-plate image is made\, why it became the dominant form of photography during much of the Victorian Era\, and why it is gaining in popularity today. You will be able to examine samples of modern and antique plates on metal and glass and learn the difference between tintypes\, ambrotypes\, and daguerreotypes. The instructor will also demonstrate the process using her 1920s-era 8×10 Kodak field camera to make a ruby ambrotype. \n [source: Rochester Brainery website\, 2015-Oct-19]

SUMMARY:Keisatsukan (Policeman) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Keisatsukan (Policeman\, Tomu Uchida\, Japan 1933\, 91 min.\, 35mm\, Japanese intertitles w/ English subtitles) as a James Card Memorial Lecture and Screening with a lecture by David Bordwell. \nGeorge Eastman Museum is honored to have David Bordwell\, the Jacques Ledoux Professor Emeritus of Film Studies at the University of Wisconsin—Madison and one of the most authoritative and influential figures in film studies\, present the 2015 James Card Memorial Lecture and introduce Policeman. This recently rediscovered Japanese silent\, shot in wonderfully expressive chiaroscuro\, evokes both the tense urban gunplay of an early Hollywood gangster movie and the dark fatalism of later film noir. In a story of conflicted loyalty and duty\, the Tokyo cop Itami is set against his old childhood friend Tomioka\, now a member of a team of gangsters. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Oct-19]

SUMMARY:New York Portrait I\, II\, III screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen New York Portrait I\, II\, III (Peter Hutton\, U.S. 1978—1990\, 47 min.\, 16mm). \n"Hutton's sketchbook of mid-1970s New York\, edited in three parts over twelve years\, is a chronicle of indelible impressions and an act of urban archeology. The artist evokes the city's delicate rhythms\, tonal contrasts\, and shifts of scale—scrims of white mist and black smoke\, of gauze\, cloud\, and fluttering pennant; the shadowy geometries of tenements and water towers; palimpsests of graffiti\, skywriting\, and painted signs; ecstatic sunlight glinting off the wings of homing pigeons as they traverse a pillowy sky; the slight rustle of a homeless man's shirt; the flowery patterns of rainwater draining from a flooded street; a blimp's lazy progress between two buildings whose balconies resemble film sprockets; and a winter fog rolling over the sandy rivulets of Coney Island\, making of it a lunar park\, removed from time." — MOMA \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Oct-19]

SUMMARY:Shivers screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Shivers (David Cronenberg\, Canada 1975\, 87 min.\, DCP). \nWill they never learn? Playing god triggers the apocalypse once again\, when scientists implanting patients with "helpful" parasites with the hope that they will function as replacements for diseased organs. This being a Cronenberg film\, it goes without saying this bright idea quickly goes from bad to cataclysmic when the parasites begin unleashing the ravenous libidos in their hosts\, who then spread the slimy\, slug-like creatures through sexual contact. Cronenberg's original title\, Orgy of the Blood Parasites\, neatly sums up the venereal mayhem that ensues when the parasites settle into their ideal host colony: an isolated high-rise housing complex filled with '70s swingers. With horror/exploitation icons Barbara Steele and Lynn Lowry in supporting roles\, this early shocker is Cronenberg at his rawest\, and with all the trademark body-horror obsessions that would drive much of his later\, sleeker work already in place. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Oct-26]

SUMMARY:Brian Ulrich's The Centurion opening reception
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Brian Ulrich will be at the George Eastman Museum for the Opening Reception for his exhibit titled The Centurion. \nAs part of its commitment to exhibit new work by contemporary artists\, the Eastman Museum presents Brian Ulrich: The Centurion in the Project Gallery from October 31\, 2015 to February 14\, 2016. Ulrich explores the visual landscape of America's consumption economy\, photographing sites and people associated with extreme wealth. His latest body of work\, The Centurion\, documents three key manifestations of excess: the display window\, where luxury goods are presented as exclusive objects of desire; personal appearance\, in which individuals cultivate eccentricity\, highlight cultural mannerisms\, and flaunt elite fashion in order to set themselves apart; and new residences designed to look like castles\, an emerging trend among the upper class. Ulrich will join Curator in Charge Lisa Hostetler for a conversation in the gallery and a preview of the exhibition. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Oct-26]

SUMMARY:Pride screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Pride (Matthew Warchus\, U.K. / France 2014\, 117 min.\, DCP) after an introduction by Bess Watts. \nPride is inspired by an extraordinary true story. It's the summer of 1984\, Margaret Thatcher is in power\, and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike\, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers' families. Initially rebuffed by the union\, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on\, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Oct-26]

His solution is to enlist the aid of Peter Vincent\, a has-been horror film actor who now hosts "Fright Night\," a local TV show.
