SUMMARY:The Hate U Give screening (2019-Apr-27 @ 1 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen The Hate U Give (George Tillman Jr.\, U.S. 2018\, 133 min.) "Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor\, mostly black\, neighborhood where she lives and the rich\, mostly white\, prep school she attends. SUMMARY:Changing Cities: A Changing Climate

In the coming decades\, the effects of a changing climate will leave no part of our lives untouched. Bookchins Communalism offers a framework by which these challenges can be addressed on a local level. \n [source: Flying Squirrel website\, 2019-Apr-22]

SUMMARY:Live Film Score; The Biggest Little Farm screening
DESCRIPTION:In Room EEW 415 of the Eastman School of Music is a Live Film Score during a screening of The Biggest Little Farm (John Chester\, U.S. 2018\, 91 min.) with composer Jeff Beal followed by a discussion moderated by Jack Garner. \nIn testament to the complexity of nature\, the film follows two dreamers on an odyssey to bring harmony to their lives and the land. John and Molly Chester make a choice that takes them out of the city and into the foothills of Ventura County\, naively endeavoring to build one of the most diverse farms of its kind in complete coexistence with nature — on land depleted of nutrients and suffering from a brutal drought. The film chronicles eight years of daunting work and outsized idealism as they attempt to create the utopia they seek. They realize that to survive they will have to reach a greater understanding of the intricacies of nature\, and of life itself — a call to arms to those who wish to follow in her footsteps. \n [source: One Take Film Festival website\, 2019-Apr-25]

SUMMARY:White Privilege: Helping in the Black Struggle
DESCRIPTION:Our Founder Miquel Powell\, BSW believes that in the pursuit of the liberation of black folks\, there have been many white folks since the Civil Rights Movement who were instrumental in helping black folks during parts of the struggle. We would like to build on that. SUMMARY:Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am (Timothy Greenfield-Sanders\, U.S. 2019\, 119 min.) followed by a Panel Discussion with Women of Color (WOC) Art Collaborative members Tamara Leigh\, Tianna Mañón\, and Delores Jackson Radney as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nAn artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the acclaimed novelist. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain\, Ohio to '70s-era book tours with Muhammed Ali\, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers\, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race\, America\, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. \nInspired to write because no one took a "little black girl" seriously\, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a collection of literature and personality\, the film includes discussions about her acclaimed works\, her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature\, and her time teaching at Princeton. \nWith this rich compilation of interviews and artwork\, along with troves of archival and historical material\, The Pieces I Am crafts a wondrous portrait of Morrison that is both intimate and reverent. As in her writing\, Morrison leaves audiences feeling recognized\, seen\, and acknowledged. \n\n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2019-Apr-22]

SUMMARY:Easter Parade screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Easter Parade (Charles Walters\, U.S. 1948\, 107 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Holiday Favorite! series. \nWhen Fred Astaire is dumped by partner Ann Miller\, he picks unsophisticated and uncoordinated Judy Garland out of a chorus as her replacement. One of the most successful musicals from MGM's famed Freed Unit\, the only pairing of Garland and Astaire (who came out of retirement just for the opportunity to work with Garland) showcases their incredible talents performing a score composed by Irving Berlin. Astaire's innovative slow-motion number "Stepping Out with My Baby" and the elaborate backlot recreation of New York's Fifth Avenue on Easter Sunday remain awe-inspiring technical achievements. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-22]

SUMMARY:American Movie screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen American Movie (Chris Smith\, U.S. 1999\, 107 min.) as part of the Saturday Night Rewind series. \nThere may be no more heroic journey from a more delusional character\, thus no more American a story\, than American Movie. Tracing Mark Borchardt's laudable\, drive to craft his independent horror film Coven — the hoped-for sales profits from which would go toward the financing of his pet project\, the feature-length drama Northwestern. \nChris Smith's film is sympathetic and revealing of the madness that is artistic drive. Smith's gift is to never overly chide his subject\, simply letting the events that transpired during the making of this witchy indie film play out. Along the way\, we meet a veritable menagerie of dreamers and enablers that provide the documentary with much of its charm. \nA testament to fortitude\, and a genuinely entertaining film\, American Movie remains a peerless documentary. Twenty years after its initial release\, it remains a vital part of the non-fiction canon\, a warm look at artistic folly that speaks to the delusional dreamer in all of us. \n\n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Apr-22]

SUMMARY:The Proposal screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The Proposal (Jill Magid\, U.S. 2018\, 86 min.) followed by a discussion with Jill Magid as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nCelebrated conceptual artist Jill Magid set her sights on an ambitious new project: an exhibition inspired by the visionary Mexican architect Luis Barragán. The only trouble was\, one woman in Switzerland owns Barragán's entire professional archive. And\, for more than 20 years\, she has kept it inaccessible to the public. \nUnable to execute her original goal\, Magid instead redirected her focus to this spellbinding documentary about her unlikely journey into a legal quagmire and her attempt to question the inaccessibility of Barragán's work. With its measured pacing and haunting ambience\, Magid's hypnotic film is an engaging examination of artistry\, diplomacy\, and posterity at a crossroads. \n\n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2019-Apr-22]

SUMMARY:Garry Winogrand: All Things Are Photographable screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Garry Winogrand: All Things Are Photographable (Sasha Waters Freyer\, U.S. 2018\, 90 min.\, DCP) followed by a discussion with filmmaker Sasha Waters Freyer as part of the One Take Film Festival. \nDescribed as a poet\, an athlete\, and a philosopher of photography\, Garry Winogrand harnessed the serendipity of the streets to capture 1960s and '70s America. His Leica M4 snapped spontaneous images of everyday people\, from the Mad Men era of New York to the early years of the Women's Movement to post—Golden Age Hollywood\, all while observing themes of cultural upheaval\, political disillusionment\, intimacy\, and alienation. Once derided by the critics\, Winogrand's snapshot aesthetic is now a universal language of contemporary image making. Featuring interviews with photographer Tod Papageorge\, writer/producer Matthew Weiner\, and former Moma curator John Szarkowski\, the film covers Winogrand's life\, including selections from the thousands of rolls of film left undeveloped upon his unexpected death in 1984. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-22]

SUMMARY:Words From a Bear screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Words From a Bear (Jeffrey Palmer\, U.S. 2019\, 86 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nWords from a Bear examines the enigmatic life of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Navarro Scott Momaday\, one of Native America's most celebrated authors of poetry and prose. The film captures the essence of Momaday's writings in relation to his unique American experience representing ancestry\, place\, and history. Cinematically this story takes a spiritual journey through the expansive landscapes of the West\, when Momaday's ancestors roamed the Great Plains with herds of buffalo\, to the sand-painted valleys of Jemez Pueblo\, New Mexico\, where his imagination ripened and he showed superior writing skills as a young mission student. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Apr-22]

SUMMARY:The Exploits of Elaine screening (2019-Apr-29 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Exploits of Elaine (Louis Gasnier\, George B. Seitz\, U.S. 1914\, 86 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Finger Lakes Film Trail series. \nTwenty-five years ago\, The Exploits of Elaine became the first serial to be honored with a place on the U.S. National Film Registry. It was also the first serial produced by Ted and Leo Wharton\, working out of Ithaca\, New York. Starring Pearl White\, who did most of her own stunts\, the serial follows Elaine\, who\, with the help of Dr. Craig Kennedy\, the "American Sherlock Holmes\," tracks down her father's murderer\, known only as "The Clutching Hand." The heroic duo use modern and beyond-modern detecting gadgets (including fingerprints!) to ferret out the villain\, inspiring not only numerous serials to come\, but also adventure films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark. These first four episodes highlight a little-known piece of film history residing in Central New York that still resonates with audiences more than a century later. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-22]

SUMMARY:Fuel Change for Electric School Buses presented by Neely Kelley
DESCRIPTION:Mothers Out Front\, in collaboration with Green For All\, Clean Energy Works and Chispa are launching an exciting and scalable campaign to push local school districts to commit to replacing their retiring dirty diesel buses with clean and quiet electric school buses. \nThe first and most important barrier to transitioning to clean electric school buses is the cost. Electric school buses cost 2 to 3 times more than diesel buses. However\, in partnership with the non-profit Clean Energy Works\, this can be overcome! And school districts can save money\, while ensuring their children ride safe and clean buses. This is what's so exciting and makes these local electric school bus campaigns winnable and scalable. \n\n [source: Flying Squirrel website\, 2019-Apr-22]
