SUMMARY:American Graffiti screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen American Graffiti (George Lucas\, U.S. 1973\, 110 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Fourth of July series. \nAs influential for launching so many careers as it was for inspiring a new subgenre of nostalgic film and television\, George Lucas's first commercial feature was turned down by four studios before finding a home at Universal. A soundtrack of more than forty vintage songs accompany Ron Howard\, Richard Dreyfuss\, Harrison Ford\, Cindy Williams\, Mackenzie Phillips\, Charles Martin Smith\, Candy Clark\, and Paul Lemat as they cruise around 1962 Modesto\, California\, post—high school and pre—real life. Balancing the tragic and the comic—and decidedly differentiating his film from the exploitative "teens and cars" movies of the 1950s and '60s—Lucas pulled from his own experiences to craft a moving portrait of the transition to adulthood. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jul-1]

SUMMARY:Food Insecurity and Food Deserts in Rochester
DESCRIPTION:At least since the "War on Poverty\," politicians have gone back and forth between saying that the answer is\, on the one hand\, more aid\, such as that offered by publicly and privately funded food programs\, or on the other hand\, that aid should be cut off such that those in need do not become reliant on it. \nHowever\, as "food insecurity" and the proliferation of "food deserts" have become common place\, those who are intent on truly solving the problems facing poor and working people in the U.S. and around the world\, must begin to look beyond symptoms to root causes. \nEastern Service Workers Association's (ESWA) organizers and members will present their analysis of the causes of poverty\, hunger and inequality in Rochester as well as throughout the Nation and will discuss their strategy of uniting the region's lowest-paid workers in organizing and running mutual aid programs while building an independent voice with which to fight for permanent solutions to poverty by holding government agencies accountable to the interests of the most vulnerable in our communities. \n\n [source: Abundance Food Co-op events page\, 2019-Jul-1]

SUMMARY:America\, America screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen America\, America (Elia Kazan\, U.S. 1963\, 174 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Fourth of July series. \nElia Kazan gives cinema perhaps its most poignant portrait of the immigrant experience in this epic adaptation of his own book inspired by his uncle's trying journey from Turkey to the United States. Kazan's use of non-actors and Haskell Wexler's cinematography coalesce in a Neorealist flavor that captures the essence of the migration experience. The confluence of Kazan's classic mastery with Wexler's cutting-edge vision results in a synthesis neither too maudlin nor abstract\, but a genuinely moving experience. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jul-1]

SUMMARY:Amos Oz: The Nature of Dreams screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Amos Oz: The Nature of Dreams (Yonathan and Masha Zur\, Israel 2009\, 86 min.\, English\, Hebrew w/ subtitles) as part of the Rochester Jewish Film Festival. \nAmos Oz\, who died in December 2018\, was a bestselling Israeli writer\, intellectual\, and peace advocate. This gorgeous documentary covers a two-year period in Oz's life during an international book tour for his wildly successful memoir\, A Tale of Love and Darkness\, published in 2005. The film takes viewers on a journey from pre-war Europe to the State of Israel's beginnings to a peace demonstration where Oz delivers a profoundly moving\, historic speech on the choices facing Israel. We see Oz\, the veteran Peace Now activist walking in Jerusalem with Palestinian writer Sari Nusseibeh\, visiting the cafes\, bus stops and beaches of Tel Aviv\, all the while asking whether reconciliation is possible. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jul-1]

SUMMARY:Chasing Portraits screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Chasing Portraits (Elizabeth Rynecki\, USA\, Canada\, Israel\, Poland 2018\, 78 min.\, English\, Polish w/ subtitles) followed by a video discussion with Elizabeth Rynecki as part of the Rochester Jewish Film Festival. \nBefore he died in the Holocaust\, Polish artist Moshe Rynecki created close to eight hundred paintings and sculptures detailing the everyday lives of his Polish- Jewish community. When Poland was invaded by the Nazis\, he left his works with friends for safekeeping. Yet after the war\, his family found only a small number of them; the rest had been scattered around the world. Decades later\, his great-granddaughter Elizabeth enlists the help of historians\, curators\, and art collectors to try to recover his extraordinary legacy. Written and directed by Elizabeth herself\, spanning three decades of her life and three generations of her family\, Chasing Portraits is a deeply moving documentary about the triumph of art over war and loss. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jul-1]

SUMMARY:The Accountant of Auschwitz screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Accountant of Auschwitz (Matthew Shoychet\, Canada 2018\, 80 min.\, English\, German w/ subtitles) followed by a discussion with producer Ric Esther Bienstock as part of the Rochester Jewish Film Festival. \nIn 2015\, 94-year-old former German SS officer Oskar Gröning\, nicknamed "the accountant of Auschwitz\," went on trial in his home country. He was charged with complicity in the murder of 300\,000 Jews at Auschwitz in 1944. The trial made headlines around the world as a frail old man took the stand to face his former victims. Gröning's trial reflects not only one frail bookkeeper's penitence\, but the world's responsibility to hold the worst of human horrors forever to public view. The Accountant of Auschwitz constructs a stark reminder that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jul-1]

SUMMARY:Redemption screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Redemption (Joseph\, and Boaz Yehonatan Yacov\, Israel 2018\, 104 min.\, Hebrew w/ subtitles) as part of the Rochester Jewish Film Festival. \nMenachem\, a former front man for a rock band\, is now a widower and a religious Jew. His dilemma: His six-year old daughter Geula is ill and he must find a way to fund the expensive treatments. His choice: Reunite the band for one last tour. The film digs into Menachem's existential and everyday turmoil and the tensions between his past secular life and his current religious one. But saving his daughter (whose name is Hebrew for "redemption") is a goal that supersedes all else. Finding a new connection to his past and to his music can pave the road to his own redemption—and his daughter's hope for a future. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jul-1]

SUMMARY:Riso Nights
DESCRIPTION:Do you love the look of screen printing or lithography\, but crave a time and cost-effective way to produce your work? Maybe you're a graphic designer who loves the saturation of layered color but aren't getting desired results with an inkjet or laser printer. \nThe Flower City Arts Center now has a Riso\, giving you a unique solution to your printmaking needs. Although similar to printers\, Risos are considered digital duplicators. Developed in the 1980s\, the Riso layers colors one at a time\, creating a vibrant final image. \nTo do this the Riso creates a "master\," which works similarly to a screen in screenprinting\, from the artist's work. This master is wrapped around a drum in the Riso. One color of ink is pressed through the master as the drum rotates. When the first color is complete\, the master is discarded and the process is repeated with remaining colors until the print is finished. \nThis eco-friendly option uses affordable soy-based inks that are not fused to the paper using heat. The final product can be printed on using other processes if the artist desires. Books\, zines\, cards\, posters\, and brochures are just some of the things that can be created using a Riso. \n\n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2019-Jul-1]

SUMMARY:Meeting Gorbachev screening (2019-Jul-9 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Meeting Gorbachev (Werner Herzog\, André Singer\, U.K. / Germany / U.S. 2018\, 95 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nNow 87 and battling illness\, the visionary Mikhail Gorbachev\, former General Secretary of the U.S.S.R\, has mellowed and slowed down. Still\, gently but resolutely\, he is pushing towards his goals. Herzog\, as on-screen interviewer\, does not disguise his affection\, celebrating Gorbachev's three remarkable accomplishments: negotiations with the U.S. to reduce nuclear weapons; cessation of Soviet control of Eastern Europe and the reunification of Germany; and the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc. All of this in six years! One German diplomat sums up Gorbachev's approach: "The process went so quickly that … opponents were overcome by the reality of the situation." Herzog and Singer remind us of the drastic and unforeseeable way the world changes. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Jul-8]
