SUMMARY:Confessions Of A Nightingale theatrical performance (2016-Jan-23 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:He was one of the great twentieth century American playwrights\, and Tennessee Williams' private persona is shown to have been just as fascinating as his plays in this delightful\, moving\, and incisive ninety minute drama. The play is structured as an interview with a reporter\, to whose unheard questions Williams responds directly to the audience as if they are doing the asking. We learn of the struggles of his early years\, his first successes\, the price of his fame and his later years of dissolution and decline\, all in Williams' delightfully witty style. SUMMARY:The Amen Corner theatrical performance (2016-Jan-23 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of The Amen Corner\, a play by James Baldwin. \nJames Baldwin was an American author\, whose literary work spanned multiple genres\, including plays\, novels\, short stories and non-fiction. Baldwin's essays as collected in Notes of a Native Son (1955) explore palpable\, yet unspoken\, intricacies of racial\, sexual and class distinctions in western societies\, most notably in mid-twentieth century America. His work inspired a generation of people who sought a voice\, an analysis\, and an articulation of their humanity and peoplehood. The relevance of his work and the truths that flowed from his pen still resonates in a profound and poignant way even today. His influence on other major writers is seen\, most especially\, in the literature of Toni Morrison and August Wilson. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:The Golden Voyage of Sinbad screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (Gordon Hessler\, U.K. 1974\, 105 min.\, 35mm). \nMissed our New Year's Day screening of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad? No matter: The second installment in Columbia's Sinbad trilogy featuring stop-motion master Ray Harryhausen's spectacular "Dynamotion" technique is a sequel in name only. Thankfully the winning formula—swashbuckling ship captain must voyage to distant\, monster-filled land to save imperiled Arabian kingdom from the forces of darkness—remains exactly the same. This time\, Barbarella's John Phillip Law dons Sinbad's turban and goes head-to-head with gargoyles\, cyclopean centaurs\, and one of Harryhausen's most complex creations: a six-armed\, scimitar-wielding idol which springs to life in inimitable Harryhausen style. Look for Robert Shaw in an uncredited cameo as an all-knowing oracle\, and the lovey Hammer scream queen (and future Bond girl) Caroline Munro as the captain's "true love"— who always seems to vanish in time for the next Sinbad picture. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-18]

SUMMARY:The Chinatown Mystery: Episodes 4–7 screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Chinatown Mystery: Episodes 4–7 (J. P. McGowan\, U.S. 1928\, 82 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nThis winter the Dryden will be screening the newly restored thrill busting silent serial The Chinatown Mystery\, starring legendary strongman and circus acrobat Joe Bonomo. Written by and co-starring Francis Ford (John Ford's older brother\, who had introduced John to filmmaking)\, this serial is filled with daring stunts\, death-defying situations\, and a rather offbeat sense of humor in the form of deceptively placid heroine Ruth Hiatt\, who had previously starred in numerous silent comedies. If you're looking for searing drama that shows life's grim realities\, we suggest driving in a Rochester blizzard; if you're looking for wide-eyed melodrama\, people being hurled every which way\, deep-dyed villainy\, and satisfying explosions\, join us for this exciting excursion into fiendish fun. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-18]

SUMMARY:Kilbourn Concert Series\, Yarn/Wire
DESCRIPTION:Yarn/Wire is a quartet of two percussionists and two pianists. This instrumental combination allows the ensemble flexibility to slip effortlessly between classics of the repertoire and modern works that continue to forge new boundaries. Founded in 2005\, Yarn/Wire is admired for the energy and precision they bring to performances of today's most adventurous music. The results of their collaborative initiatives with genre-bending artists such as Two-Headed Calf\, Pete Swanson\, and Tristan Perich point towards the emergence of a new and lasting repertoire that is "spare and strange and very\, very new." SUMMARY:La Pointe Courte screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La Pointe Courte (Agnès Varda\, France 1955\, 86 min.\, DCP\, French w/subtitles). \nWeighing equally the struggle of a couple to sustain their relationship and the struggle of the impoverished inhabitants of a Mediterranean fishing village to survive\, La Pointe Courte is a seemingly clear extension of Italian Neorealism. First-time director Agnès Varda professed ignorance of the movement and claimed to have seen very few films at that point\, pointing instead to a literary influence in William Faulkner's The Wild Palms. Beyond the use of primarily non-professional actors and on-location shooting\, La Pointe Courte is\, in style\, like nothing else before it. Varda's application of a literary structure to cinematic expression\, with the assistance of editor Alain Resnais\, worked to loosen structural bounds and introduce counterpoint to narrative cinema\, earning it the distinction of what historian Georges Sadoul would call\, "truly the first film of the nouvelle vague." In Varda's own hometown of Sète and on a shoestring budget\, she gave birth to the French New Wave. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-18]
