SUMMARY:Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives screening
DESCRIPTION:Brighton Memorial Library will screen Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives (Jeffrey Smith\, U.S. / India / South Africa 2012\, 85 min.) \n[Jeffrey Smith] is a leading consumer advocate promoting healthier non-GMO choices. New evidence points to genetically engineered foods as a major contributor to rising disease rates in the U.S. population\, especially among children. Gastrointestinal disorders\, allergies\, inflammatory diseases\, and infertility are just some of the problems implicated in humans\, pets\, livestock\, and lab animals that eat genetically modified soybeans and corn. This sometimes shocking film may change your diet\, help you protect your family\, and accelerate the consumer tipping point against GMOs. \n [source: Color Brighton Green website\, 2015-Dec-14]

SUMMARY:Chan sam ying hung (A Hero Never Dies) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Chan sam ying hung (A Hero Never Dies\, Johnnie To\, Hong Kong 1998\, 86 min.\, 35mm\, Cantonese w/subtitles). \nBy the time he directed A Hero Never Dies\, Johnnie To had been making films for full twenty years\, and his vast oeuvre consisted of practically everything\, from martial arts fantasies and soap operas to screwball comedies and romantic melodramas—all competent\, entertaining accomplishments\, showing a quiet\, dedicated craftsman at work. But when he first tackled the genre of an action gangster film in 1998 with A Hero Never Dies\, To's truest talent emerged and the history of hardboiled genre opened a brand new chapter. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Dec-28]

SUMMARY:We Come as Friends screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen We Come as Friends (Hubert Sauper\, France/Austria 2014\, 110 min.\, DCP\, diverse languages w/subtitles). \nAcademy Award-nominated director Hubert Sauper's We Come as Friends is a modern odyssey\, a dizzying\, science fiction—like journey into the heart of Africa. At the moment when the Sudan\, the continent's biggest country\, is being divided into two nations\, an old "civilizing" pathology re-emerges—that of colonialism\, the clash of empires\, and new episodes of bloody (and holy) wars over land and resources. The director of Darwin's Nightmare takes us on this voyage in his tiny\, self-made tin-and-canvas flying machine. He leads us into most improbable locations and into people's thoughts and dreams\, in both stunning and heartbreaking ways. Chinese oil workers\, U.N. peacekeepers\, Sudanese warlords\, and American evangelists ironically weave common ground in this documentary\, a complex\, profound\, and humorous cinematic endeavor. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-4]

SUMMARY:Hitchcock/Truffaut screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Hitchcock/Truffaut (Kent Jones\, U.S. 2015\, 80 min.\, DCP). \nIn 1962\, François Truffaut persuaded Alfred Hitchcock to sit with him for a week-long interview in which the great British auteur would share with his young admirer the secrets of his cinema. Based on the original recordings of this meeting—used to produce the seminal book Hitchcock/Truffaut—this film illustrates the greatest cinema lesson of all time and plunges us into the world of the creator of Psycho\, The Birds\, and Vertigo. Hitchcock's singular vision is elucidated and brought vividly to life by today's leading filmmakers: Martin Scorsese\, David Fincher\, Arnaud Desplechin\, Kiyoshi Kurosawa\, Wes Anderson\, James Gray\, Olivier Assayas\, Richard Linklater\, Peter Bogdanovich\, and Paul Schrader. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-4]

SUMMARY:The Man Who Knew Too Much screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Man Who Knew Too Much (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.K. 1934\, 75 min.\, 35mm). \nThe assassination of a British agent\, a kidnapping\, and international conspiracy are just some of the highlights in this tense story created by the Master of Suspense. While on holiday in Saint Moritz\, an ordinary British couple find themselves holding the clue to an impending assassination. When their daughter is kidnapped\, they have to choose between following orders from the abductors or work to prevent an International Crisis. Featuring Peter Lorre in his first English-speaking role as the mastermind behind the conspiracy\, this sharp and witty story gives the movie audience a chance to feel the action from beginning to end. Hitchcock would remake this ingenious thriller two decades later and when interviewed by François Truffaut\, Hitchcock famously said "The first version is the work of a talented amateur and the second was made by a professional." Nevertheless\, we think you will agree this still shines as one of his best. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-4]
