SUMMARY:Demonstration Against Racism\, Islamophobia\, and War
DESCRIPTION:Don't let the Paris attacks be used as a pretext for war and racism! Right wing politicians and their supporters\, both nationally and locally\, are whipping up a racist\, Islamophobic\, anti-immigrant hysteria. They are trying to use the tragic killings in Paris as a way to spread fear and prejudice\, and to justify violations of human rights and civil liberties for all of us. They are trying to involve the U.S. In a wider war in Syria. They would like to distract the people of the U.S from the problems of police brutality\, racism\, and growing economic inequality here at home. Let us stand together in solidarity with students and youth\, and the Black Lives Matter movement\, against institutionalized racism and police violence in our communities. We are in solidarity with immigrants and refugees from Syria\, Iraq\, Afghanistan\, and occupied Palestine; from every place ravaged by war and poverty. Say No to Criminalizing Migrants! Say No to War in Syria! \n [source: Rochester Indymedia website\, 2015-Nov-30]

SUMMARY:¡Qué Locura! (Such Craziness!) (2015-Dec-5 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of ¡Qué Locura! (Such Craziness!) as part of the Puerto Rican Festival Inc. \nAn original and very funny play about Latino families and their issues. Play is written in English with some Spanish words and expressions throughout the dialogue. "Such Craziness!" ("¡Qué Locura!") is a peek into a family's life that presents a full spectrum of emotions as the characters confront their hopes for tolerance\, empathy\, compassion and mostly\, love. SUMMARY:Kill Bill: Vol. I screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Kill Bill: Vol. I (Quentin Tarantino\, U.S. 2003\, 111 min.\, 35mm). \nBy the time Quentin Tarantino approached Kill Bill: Vol 1\, he had tackled and mastered the gangster and Blaxploitation genres. The Kill Bill saga combines the samurai\, kung fu\, and yakuza genres to construct a hyper-stylized modern take\, which refreshingly exchanges the tired samurai role for a fierce female assassin in a sleek yellow leather jumpsuit. Reuniting Tarantino with Uma Thurman\, who also collaborated on the story\, the film stars Thurman as the Bride\, who\, having fled life as an assassin\, is pregnant and set to marry when she is viciously attacked and sent into a coma. She wakes four years later to the realization that the only possible opportunity for a normal life has been stolen from her. She pledges to take revenge on her former colleagues and their leader\, Bill. In typical Tarantino fashion\, Kill Bill is packed to the brim with cinematic references and wild\, over-the-top violence. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Nov-30]

DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ziegfeld Follies (Vincente Minnelli\, Lemuel Ayers\, Roy Del Ruth\, Robert Lewis\, Merrill Pye\, George Sidney\, and Charles Walters\, U.S. 1946\, 110 min.\, 35mm). \nWilliam Powell\, once again as Florenz Ziegfeld\, looks down from the heavens and orchestrates a grand Technicolor musical-comedy review in the tradition of his glorious stage shows. The magnificent assemblage of MGM contract performers includes Judy Garland\, Lucille Ball\, Lena Horne\, Red Skelton\, Esther Williams\, and best of all\, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly in their only on-screen pairing until That's Entertainment in 1974. \n[source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Nov-30]

SUMMARY:The Armor Of Light screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The Armor Of Light (Abigail Disney\, Kathleen Hughes\, U.S. 2015\, 88 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nDocumentary producer Abigail Disney's directorial debut follows the journey of Reverend Rob Schenck\, an evangelical minister who finds the courage to preach about the toll of gun violence in America. An anti-abortion activist\, Schenck questions whether being pro-gun is consistent with being pro-life\, much to the discomfort of his colleagues. He eventually meets Lucy Mcbath\, also a Christian and the mother of Jordan Davis\, an unarmed teenager who was murdered in Florida and whose case has become a landmark in the fight against "Stand Your Ground" laws. Through their stories\, intercut with revealing footage underlining the marriage between the religious right and the NRA\, The Armor of Light asserts that even in the face of heartbreak\, outrage\, and political affiliations\, it is possible for people to evolve their opinions\, and potentially come together to find common ground. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Nov-23]

SUMMARY:Big Business\, The Valiant screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Big Business (Leo Mccarey\, James W. Horne\, U.S. 1929\, 19 min.\, 16mm)\, and The Valiant (William K. Howard\, U.S. 1929\, 61 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nSilence and sound shakily coexisted in the American film world of 1929\, but as we all know\, the latter won out in the end. This shift is displayed in tonight's program\, first featuring silent Laurel and Hardy in one of their defining films\, Big Business\, in which their salesmanship "abilities" run up against the world's most unwilling and stubborn prospect. Then\, we see speaking Paul Muni in his film debut as The Valiant\, a mysterious condemned prisoner who intensely guards his secrets against all prying. Laurel\, Hardy\, and Muni all went on to even greater successes once the "talkie revolution" had settled down\, but it is fascinating and entertaining to see these three legends coming into their own in what turned out to be a cataclysmic year. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Nov-30]

SUMMARY:Far From Poland screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Far From Poland (Jill Godmilow\, U.S. / Poland 1984\, 106 min.\, 16mm). \nIn Jill Godmilow's Far From Poland\, reenactment\, melodrama\, and self-reflexive address complicate our understanding of truth in documentary. Inspired by her experiences in Poland shortly after the start of the solidarity movement\, Godmilow conceived of this film upon returning to New York with the intention to raise funds for an expository take on the workers' struggle. After a denied travel visa foreclosed the possibility of executing her original idea\, however\, she broadened the investigation to include the formal parameters of truth-telling in nonfiction cinema. Far From Poland offers viewers the opportunity to examine their relationship to history as it is mediated by filmmaking. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Nov-30]

SUMMARY:Une Danse des Bouffons (A Jester's Dance) screenings (2015-Dec-10 @ 11 a.m.)
DESCRIPTION:During the day today\, the MAG will be screen Une Danse des Bouffons (A Jester's Dance\, Marcel Dzama\, U.S. / Canada 2013\, 19 min.) \nThis 2013 film by Canadian artist Marcel Dzama is a fictionalized account of the ill-fated affair between Dada artist Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins. Rife with art historical references to the work of Duchamp\, Francisco Goya\, Francis Picabia and Joseph Beuys\, among others\, the 30-minute production is an exciting and often bizarre exploration of the surreal. \n [source: MAG website\, 2015-Dec-7]
