SUMMARY:Western screening (2018-Mar-10 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Western (Valeska Grisebach\, Germany/Bulgaria/Austria 2017\, 119 min.\, DCP\, German\, Bulgarian w/subtitles). \nAn intense\, slow-burning thriller\, Western follows a group of German construction workers installing a hydroelectric plant in remote rural Bulgaria. The foreign land awakens the men's sense of adventure\, but tensions mount when Meinhard\, the strong\, silent newcomer to the group\, starts mixing with the local villagers. The two sides speak different languages and share a troubled history. Can they learn to trust each other\, or is the stage being set for a showdown? The third feature by Valeska Grisebach—arguably the most original and perceptive European filmmaker of the 21st century—was well worth waiting the eleven years since her previous masterpiece\, Longing. In an era of global mass migration and growing cultural clashes\, Western thoroughly explores the fundamental question of peaceful coexistence of different traditions. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Mar-5]

SUMMARY:The Sunset Limited theatrical performance (2018-Mar-10 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of The Sunset Limited. \nFrom the mind of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men\, The Road) comes a play about what happens when a person is saved — and they wish not to have been saved at all. A black man has stopped a white professor from throwing himself in front of a train\, and takes him to his apartment in Harlem. The two men find themselves in a philosophical discussion on the purpose of living\, of death\, and all other great matters in between. \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-Mar-5]

SUMMARY:FluidØ screening
DESCRIPTION:Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center will host a screening of FluidØ (Shu Lea Cheang\, Germany 2017\, 80 min.) and a discussion with filmmaker Shu Lea Cheang. \nHallwalls is thrilled and honored to welcome back now Paris-based filmmaker and media artist Shu Lea Cheang\, whose last appearance at Hallwalls was 22 years ago\, December 1\, 1995\, when she presented her then newest film Fresh Kill: An Eco-Cybernoia Film (1995\, 80 min.)\, in partnership with Squeaky Wheel and the Central New York Programmers Group. Fresh Kill's screenplay was by novelist Jessica Hagedorn\, and the cast included Karen Finley\, Robbie McCauley\, Ron Vawter\, Laurie Carlos\, and Sarita Choudhury. Shu Lea's first visit to Hallwalls had been in February 1990\, on the occasion of her audio/visual installation Making News/Making History: Live from Tiananmen Square\, a centerpiece of that year's Video Witnesses: Festival of New Journalism. In between those visits\, her 3-channel video work Color Schemes (1989\, 28 min.) was shown at Squeaky Wheel as part of Hallwalls' Visible Women series (March 1992)\, and Sex Fish (produced by E.T. Baby Maniac: Ela Troyano\, Jane Castle\, and Shu Lea Cheang\, 1993\, 6 min.) was shown in Hallwalls' Mosaics of Desire series\, part of our fourth biannual Ways In Being Gay festival (1994). (Even earlier\, FluidØ's producer\, Jürgen Brüning\, moved from Berlin to Buffalo for two years—1988-1990—to serve as Hallwalls' staff film curator.) FluidØ (pronounced "fluid-zero") is a 2017 German science fiction film [in English] directed by Shu Lea Cheang. It was screened in the Panorama section at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. Set in the 2060s\, the film depicts a world in which HIV/AIDS has been fully eradicated. In some people\, however\, the virus has mutated into a gene that can be extracted to create a new psychoactive drug\, leading to the creation of an extensive underground network of human trafficking to capture the carriers of this mutation in order to manufacture the drug. \n [source: Hallwalls website\, 2018-Mar-5]

SUMMARY:Le mura di Malapaga (The Walls of Malapaga) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Le mura di Malapaga (The Walls of Malapaga\, René Clément\, Italy/France 1949\, 89 min.\, 35mm\, Italian\, French w/subtitles) as part of the Academy Awards at 90 series. \nRené Clément\, the leading post—World War II and pre—Nouvelle Vague French filmmaker\, most famous for his 1952 classic Forbidden Games\, made an international name for himself with this peculiar and highly original mixture of two seemingly incomparable genres: neorealist drama and film noir. Jean Gabin\, the biggest French star of the time\, plays a criminal on the run across Europe who finds shelter in Italian Genoa\, where he falls in love with a local woman. Recipient of the honorary Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1950\, The Walls of Malapaga is one of those films once respected as prime examples of high-quality French cinema\, only to be then quickly (and perhaps unfairly) almost completely forgotten in favor of a much louder\, younger generation of French filmmakers. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Mar-5]

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Neither Living Nor Dead: Documentary photography in the 1970's and 80's with Dana Tyrrell
DESCRIPTION:Join us and our Workspace Resident Researcher\, Dana Tyrrell as we explore documentary photography centered in and around New York City in the 1970's and 80's\, with special focus given to the work of Peter Hujar and David Wojnarowicz. We will look at these artists photographic works as a product of both their impoverished lifestyles and as a reaction to it. The work itself acts as a foil which prefigures and reacts in real time to the HIV/AIDS epidemic during that period of time. We will also touch upon the work of Buffalo documentary photographer Milton Rogovin\, and the differences between straight documentary photography\, and documentary photography cum art object. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2018-Mar-5]

SUMMARY:The Prowler screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Prowler (Joseph Losey\, U.S. 1951\, 91 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Tarnished Badge series. \nSet in a shadowy postwar Los Angeles\, The Prowler focuses on a wealthy but neglected housewife (Evelyn Keyes) who spends her evenings alone\, with only her husband's voice on the radio for company. When she's spooked by a peeping tom\, a calculating cop (Van Heflin) answers the call\, turning her ordered life upside down. The Prowler was the third of five films Losey made in Hollywood\, and the most critically and commercially successful. The following year\, Losey was officially blacklisted and soon embarked on a career abroad\, where he eventually earned a reputation as a European auteur. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Mar-5]

SUMMARY:White Line Fever: Tales Of The Road—Bicycling Cross Country by Tony Nowak
DESCRIPTION:Would you ever consider sleeping in a tent\, in a cemetery or a Bates type motel? Does the idea of spending day after day alone — far from home\, with no cell phone\, appeal to you? Would you relish the thought of physically pushing yourself beyond your farthest dreams in situations where there would be no relief\, no turning back\, and no choice but to push forward? Can you imagine riding a bicycle an average of 94 miles a day for 37 straight days\, over mountains\, in 100 degree heat\, though numerous storms\, with tractor trailers passing within a few feet of you at 60 Mph? If you think about planning such a trip today\, you would expect to hop on the Internet\, research possible routes\, eateries\, camping grounds\, motels\, road conditions\, bike shops\, etc. In 1986\, when Tony planned and set upon his cross-country trip\, he had the help of an Adventure Cycling Association planned route with accompanying maps. Other than that he had his legs\, his bicycle and a "wing and a prayer". \n [source: Adirondack Mountain Club website\, 2018-Mar-5]
