SUMMARY:O lună în Thailanda (A Month in Thailand) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen O lună în Thailanda (A Month in Thailand\, Paul Negoescu\, Romania 2013\, 84 min.\, DCP\, Romanian w/subtitles). \n"Paul Negoescu's brilliant film shares with The Unspeakable Act a distinctly Rohmerian vibe (though the resemblance in Negoescu's case is apparently due more to temperamental similarity than to homage)\, and takes its place in a loose 21st-century neo-Rohmerian movement that also includes Celina Murga's Ana and the Others\, Guillaume Brac's A World Without\, and the short films of Sky Hirschkron (who plays the brother in The Unspeakable Act) and Ted Fendt. Negoescu's likeable but somewhat mysterious protagonist Radu pursues the Holy Grail of reclaiming his discarded ex-lover with a Rohmerian conviction that is slowly problematized by the complexity of the emotional landscape he navigates. A beautifully structured and intelligent work\, full of unexpected delights." — Dan Sallitt \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-8]

SUMMARY:Men Without Hats\, China Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The new wave synth pop collective Men Without Hats were formed in 1980 by brothers Ivan and Stefan Doroschuk. Ivan was the leader of the group\, writing the majority of the songs and providing the lead vocals; Stefan was the guitarist; and other members changed frequently throughout the course of the group's career. They independently released their debut Ep\, Folk of the '80s\, in 1980; it was reissued the following year by Stiff in Britain. During 1982\, the band consisted of Ivan\, Stefan\, another brother Colin Doroschuk (keyboards)\, along with drummer Allan Mccarthy; this is the lineup that recorded Men Without Hats' 1982 debut album\, Rhythm of Youth. Taken from their debut\, the single "The Safety Dance" became a major hit\, peaking on the American charts at number three in 1983. Driven by an insistent three-chord synthesizer riff\, the song was one of the biggest synth pop hits of the new wave era. \n[source: Montage Music Hall website\, 2015-Jun-8]

SUMMARY:Yellow Sky screening (2015-Jun-14 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Yellow Sky (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1948\, 98 min.\, 35mm). \nA gang of bank-robbing bandits\, led by the feared outlaw Stretch (Gregory Peck)\, flee from a posse into a desert to find refuge in a ghost town populated only by an ancient gold digger and his tomboy granddaughter (Anne Baxter). "A wonderfully disorienting cinematic experience. Part-western but also part-noir\, style is key in Yellow Sky\, as Wellman highlights the expansive landscapes with disjointed camera angles\, too-close-for-comfort close-ups\, and high-contrast black and white photography. You see and feel the space and\, after a misleadingly jovial theme song that leads into a brief cue from Oh Susanna\, you also hear it\, as Wellman strips the movie of any soundtrack except the uncomfortable sound of silence. Peck\, Widmark\, and any horse caught on camera are at the center of the action\, but it's Anne Baxter that steals the show. As the only woman in the picture\, she's typical of many of Wellman's women of the 1940s and 1950s\, a no holds barred frontier women using her body as a means of achieving a life of her own choosing." — Il cinema ritrovato \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-8]

SUMMARY:Tightrope screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Tightrope (Richard Tuggle\, U.S. 1984\, 115 min.\, 35mm). \nJames Card's famously inclusive approach to film curation was firmly rooted in his own broad personal taste. Case in point: Card's great admiration for Clint Eastwood\, a "genre" actor and filmmaker whose work\, Card realized early on\, often transcended mere formula. Exquisitely shot by Eastwood's longtime cinematographer Bruce Surtees and directed by Richard Tuggle (although it's said Eastwood\, having grown impatient with Tuggle's slow pace\, eventually took over)\, this twisty—and twisted—thriller works as both a gripping neo-noir and a disturbing psychological portrait of a cop who's begun to lose his moral center. Eastwood is excellent as Wes Block\, a tormented New Orleans police detective hunting for a sadistic serial killer in the nocturnal underbelly of the Big Sleazy—a terrain Block knows a bit too well. As the body count rises\, the killer's emerging profile becomes a dark reflection of Block's own distorted desires. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-8]

SUMMARY:Blonde Redhead\, Talk In Tongues
DESCRIPTION:Blonde Redhead has always been a band that innovates with each album. They challenge themselves with each recording situation\, and the results have been stunning every time. Their music is always inspired by the same emotions\, but their tastes and ways they choose to execute those emotions are constantly evolving. It was the early conversations about how to make this record that led the band to work with the up and coming Swedish duo Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid (Henrik von Sivers and Peder Mannerfelt) as producers on the record. Drew Brown (Radiohead\, Beck) also came on board to record the tracks that would eventually be used in Stockholm. \nLos Angeles foursome Talk In Tongues didn't come out of nowhere\, although it sounded that way when their debut single "Still Don't Seem To Care" suddenly appeared online. And it felt that way for them at the beginning\, too\, when each member was a refugee from another band that just wasn't working right. Back then\, they were barely acquaintances—guitarist and singer Mccoy Kirgo remembers seeing his future bandmates at shows in their other bands\, and then at parties after the shows. And if you looked into the music they'd already made\, it didn't quite make sense for them to put a band together. (Future bassist Waylon Rector wrote constantly\, but all his songs were laptop-made synth-pop.) \n [source: Waiting Room website\, 2015-Jun-8]
