SUMMARY:Muriel ou Le temps d'un retour (Muriel\, or The Time of Return) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Muriel ou Le temps d'un retour (Muriel\, or The Time of Return\, Alain Resnais\, France/Italy 1963\, 115 min.\, 16mm\, French w/subtitles) as part of the Three Films by Alain Resnais series. \nFollowing two bona fide landmark achievements of cinematic art that brought him international fame and success—Hiroshima mon amour (1959) and Last Year at Marienbad (1961)—Alain Resnais chose to push his already groundbreaking notions of cinematic space\, time\, and trauma even further with Muriel. The elliptic\, elusive\, and fragmented narrative revolves around the ideas of loss\, guilt\, and the passing of time\, and follows a woman haunted by past love and a man tormented by his past misdeeds\, with the French occupation of Algeria providing a context for all the interior drama. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jan-9]

SUMMARY:Marty screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Marty (Delbert Mann\, U.S. 1955\, 90 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Ernest Borgnine series. \nThe second of only two films ever to win both the Palm d'or and the Academy Award for Best Picture\, Marty began as a teleplay by the great Paddy Chayefsky\, who then adapted the script for the big screen. Taking over for Rod Steiger\, extraordinarily great Ernest Borgnine slipped effortlessly into the role of a kindhearted but lonely Bronx butcher who comes to the aid of an equally plain schoolteacher (Betsy Blair) after she is abandoned at a dancehall by her date. Together\, these two lonely hearts share a close encounter with love. Hailing from an era of extravagant Hollywood spectacles\, this unusually smart and humane drama seems almost shocking in its rejection of clichés and its embrace of real life\, and can be seen as America's answer to Italian neorealism. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jan-9]

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Sondra Perry: flesh out
DESCRIPTION:The Squeaky Wheel will host an Opening Reception for Sondra Perry: flesh out with artist Sondra Perry; on display through April 1. \nThe five works included in this exhibition of work by Sondra Perry are critical investigations into the way digital technology gives shape and encompasses representation. netherrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 2.0 (2017) is a video work that establishes a sonority that is articulated throughout the exhibit with an examination of the Windows operating system's "Blue Screen of Death\," the screen that appears when the Windows operating system is frozen in error. A similar shade of blue—a chroma-key paint used for industrial special effects work—covers the gallery except for one wall\, which is covered by a manipulated video projection of the artist's skin titled Wall 2 (2016). The same image of Perry's skin is also used as the backdrop for her digital avatar in Ashes for Three Monitor Workstation (2017)\, a video installation mounted on a manual treadmill. Finally\, our window space features Wet and Wavy Looks—typhon coming on (2016)\, a video piece that features a digitally-manipulated image of Joseph Turner's 1840 painting Slavers Throwing overboard the Dead and Dying—typhon coming on in an ocean modifier\, an ocean simulation tool in the free and open -source 3D computer graphics software Blender. The manipulated presence of the artist's skin\, voice\, and person throughout the exhibition map an interface in which representation and refusal are utilized and fleshed out. Perry will be present for the opening\, and will be joined by Squeaky Wheel Executive Director Maiko Tanaka for a public conversation. A newly commissioned essay by art and art history scholar and critic Soyoung Yoon accompanies the exhibition. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2017-Jan-16]

SUMMARY:Ich war neunzehn (I Was Nineteen) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ich war neunzehn (I Was Nineteen\, Konrad Wolf\, East Germany 1968\, 115 min.\, DCP\, German w/subtitles) as part of the New DEFA Restoration series. \nIn 1968\, the East German film studio DEFA produced two feature films about the 1945 liberation of Germany by Soviet troops. Both films tell autobiographical stories but while director Heiner Carow's film that we will show Friday\, January 27\, was banned during post-production\, director Konrad Wolf's I Was Nineteen became one of the studio's most celebrated films. Wolf tells the story of young Gregor\, who returns to Germany as a Red Army soldier after having fled his native country with his family as a child. The studio endorsed the close ties between Germans and Soviets in the figure of Gregor\, but the film actually paints a complicated picture of a young man struggling for his identity. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jan-16]

SUMMARY:The Trump Card by Mike Daisey read by J. R. Teeter (2017-Jan-20 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Bread and Water Theatre will host a reading by J. R. Teeter of Mike Daisey's The Trump Card. \nAuthor and monologist Mike Daisey takes on the reigning world heavyweight of self-mythologizing\, the short fingered vulgarian who captured the nation's heart through bullying\, charm\, one-syllable explosions\, and occasionally telling the brutal truth: Donald J. Trump. Daisey tells Trump's story from his earliest days\, tracking him as he makes himself into a new American archetype as the first rich man famous exclusively for being rich. Instead of dismissing Trump as a simple con artist and huckster\, Daisey breaks down what makes Trump Tick and in doing so illuminates the state of our American Dream and how we've sold out. \n [source: Bread and Water Theatre e-mail\, 2017-Jan-2]

SUMMARY:Writing With Photographs\, Gail Hosking
DESCRIPTION:Gail Hosking will present a workshop titled \nWriting With Photographs \n in the Kate Gleason Auditorium in the Bausch and Lomb Library Building. \nBring a few photographs to work with as we learn how to study them for information we can use in our writing. We will learn the art of observation using the French philosopher Roland Barthes terms "the punctum" and "the stadium." From there we will unfold what needs to be written and begin to shape some of the photographs' secret truths. Gathering these threads of history\, we will find our material. Instructor Gail Hosking is the author of the memoir Snake's Daughter: the Roads in and out of War and the poetry chapbook The Tug. Her work has been anthologized several times. She holds an MFA from Bennington College and taught for many years at RIT. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2017-Jan-16]

SUMMARY:People's Solidarity Rally
DESCRIPTION:As witnessed by the recent election\, there has been a profound deepening of the divisions in our country. Etched in history\, these divisions cleave us from one another across the lines of racial\, ethnic\, religious\, and sexual identity. Through this rally\, we seek to address these divisions and stand together in the face of injustice. The work of this march is not only to stand together in solidarity for the protection of our rights\, our safety\, our families and our environment — but it is also to build relationships and mend the divides between our communities. The goal of the rally is to publicly voice opposition to the hate and division that have surfaced across the nation since the presidential election; stand in solidarity with marginalized groups; and support those participating in the Women's March in Washington\, D.C. and in similar rallies across the nation. We're part of a greater\, national message that\, combined with all the other rallies happening on and around Inauguration Day\, shows people both inside the U.S. and across the world\, that the United States of America is a place where diversity is not just valued\, but is recognized as an integral part of what makes our country great. \n [source: Facebook\, 2017-Jan-16]

SUMMARY:Focus 45 lecture\, Todd Gustavson\, The Kodak DCS: 25 Years of Digital Photography
DESCRIPTION:The George Eastman Museum will host a Focus 45 lecture with Todd Gustavson discussing The Kodak DCS: 25 Years of Digital Photography. \nIn the early 1990s\, digital photography emerged from the Kodak laboratories as a high-end consumer product\, the Kodak Digital Camera System (DCS). Partnering with the Associated Press in 1994\, Eastman Kodak Company helped to make the digital single-reflex (DSLR) camera the industry standard\, and a decade later\, DSLR camera sales eclipsed those of their film counterparts. Todd Gustavson\, curator of the technology collection\, will discuss this milestone achievement in image-making technology. Select DCS cameras are on view in the History of Photography Gallery. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jan-16]
