SUMMARY:I Origins screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen I Origins (Mike Cahill\, U.S. 2014\, 106 min.) followed by a discussion with Dr. Steven E. Feldon as part of the Science on Screen series. \nI Origins\, the second feature film from writer and director Mike Cahill\, tells the story of Dr. Ian Gray (Michael Pitt)\, a molecular biologist studying the evolution of the eye. As his research continues years later with his lab partner Karen (Brit Marling)\, they make a stunning scientific discovery that has far reaching implications and complicates both his scientific and spiritual beliefs. Traveling half way around the world\, he risks everything he has ever known to validate his theory. SUMMARY:Hamlet screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Hamlet (Svend Gade and Heinz Schall\, Germany 1921\, 104 min.\, 35mm\, w/ English intertitles) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nMany silent filmmakers turned to Shakespeare for source material\, transforming the Bard's verbal poetry and drama into visual equivalents\, but none more unusually than this project spearheaded by the legendary Danish actress Asta Nielsen. Nielsen\, who takes the title role in this production\, brings more than one kind of ambiguity into her portrayal of the "melancholy Dane\," which also gains weight from being shot at some of the actual settings (such as Elsinore Castle) called for in the play. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-2]

SUMMARY:Madonna: Truth or Dare screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Madonna: Truth or Dare (Alek Keshishian\, U.S. 1991\, 120 min.\, 35mm). \nGorgeously photographed in both color and black and white\, Alek Keshishian's monumental behind-the-scenes revelation follows the pop icon on her controversial and wildly successful 1990 Blond Ambition concert tour. Madonna navigates her various personas—Queen of Pop\, businesswoman\, and mother hen—in this film\, which also provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of her backup dancers. Celebrity cameos abound\, the most extraordinary of which is Madonna's then boyfriend Warren Beatty who\, bemused by the spectacle\, teases\, "what point is there existing if it's off camera." A constant attraction for controversy\, Madonna eludes arrest in Toronto for lewd sexual conduct and participates in pre-concert prayer circles\, even while her tour is widely criticized for juxtaposing sex and Catholic iconography. The highest grossing documentary of its time treats with deference an unrelenting performance both on and off stage. Amid a celebratory spectacle\, which seems to denote chaos\, what emerges is Madonna's strict discipline\, culminating in one of the greatest concert tours ever captured on film. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-2]

SUMMARY:Artist's Talk: Penny Wolin\, "Descendants of light : American photographers of Jewish ancestry\, 1853-2015"
DESCRIPTION:Penny Wolin will discuss her book Descendants of light : American photographers of Jewish ancestry\, 1853-2015 in the Dryden Theatre at the George Eastman Museum. \nPhotographer and author Penny Wolin spent eight years traveling throughout the United States photographing and interviewing more than seventy American Jewish photographers. The Eastman Museum is proud to welcome Wolin to discuss this work\, which is the subject of her new book\, Descendants of Light: American Photographers of Jewish Ancestry. Wolin photographed each artist and interviewed them about possible connections between Jewish ancestry and the practice of photography. She then re-photographed their heirloom ancestral photographs dating as far back as the mid-1850s. Wolin's audiovisual conversation will feature excerpts from her interviews and full-screen photographs. Within these multilayered materials\, Wolin gives voice and vision to the photographers' views on the nature of the photographic medium and its intersection with American Jewish culture. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:Loosen The Bible Belt Tour
DESCRIPTION:Kristen Becker\, and Pastor Jay Bakker will perform at Babeville. \nComedian Kristen Becker (Founder\, Dykes of Hazard Comedy) and Pastor Jay Bakker ( Founder\, Revolution Church\, Host of This is Radiocast Podcast) are teaming up in the name of equality. Becker\, an outspoken lesbian comedian\, stumbled across a copy of the documentary "One Punk Under God" which features Pastor Bakker and his church\, Revolution Ministries. Becker was enthralled with Pastor Bakker's personal revelation that the LGBTQ community was unfairly being shut out of the Evangelical church. Seeing his genuine interest in doing what was right and knowing a large percentage of the southern friends were being raised Evangelical\, but then shut out of their own churches\, Becker reached out to Bakker. A few Twitter messages and emails later\, "Loosen the Bible Belt" was born. This spring\, the duo are kicking off a 15-city tour in Buffalo at Asbury Hall. \n [source: Babeville website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:Moonraker screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Moonraker (Lewis Gilbert\, U.K./France/U.S. 1979\, 126 min.\, 35mm). \nIn 1977\, James Bond and The Spy Who Loved Me were outdone at the box office by a newcomer to the multiplex: Star Wars. Eon Productions gleaned a lesson from this\, and just as how Live and Let Die was influenced by '70s blaxploitation flicks\, Moonraker would incorporate elements of the now-popular space adventure genre. For better or worse\, this concept was paired with a bizarre sense of humor and a level of camp that makes Diamonds Are Forever look modest by comparison. This film marks the final appearance of both veteran actor Bernard Lee as M and Richard Kiel's giant metal-toothed henchman\, Jaws. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]
