SUMMARY:The Long Voyage Home screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Long Voyage Home (John Ford\, U.S. 1940\, 103 min.\, 35mm). \n"The powers and fascinations of director John Ford and playwright Eugene O'Neill are happily met in this 1940 feature dramatizing the lives of men who serve as crew members aboard commercial freighters. Like O'Neill\, Ford nursed a lifelong obsession with sailing and the sea\, and had spent his early years in Portland\, Maine\, amid the maritime culture that this picture describes. Adapted and updated by screenwriter Dudley Nichols (Ford's frequent collaborator) from four of O'Neill's early plays set aboard the fictional 'SS Glencairn\,' the film recounts the experiences of the ship's crew while transporting ammunition from the West Indies to England during World War II." — Shannon Kelley\, UCLA \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Nov-30]

SUMMARY:¡Qué Locura! (Such Craziness!) (2015-Dec-4 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of ¡Qué Locura! (Such Craziness!) as part of the Puerto Rican Festival Inc. \nAn original and very funny play about Latino families and their issues. Play is written in English with some Spanish words and expressions throughout the dialogue. "Such Craziness!" ("¡Qué Locura!") is a peek into a family's life that presents a full spectrum of emotions as the characters confront their hopes for tolerance\, empathy\, compassion and mostly\, love. We Are Family And Family First is the simple but meaningful message at the core of this entertaining yet thought-provoking play. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Nov-30]

SUMMARY:The Big Broadcast screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Big Broadcast (Frank Tuttle\, U.S. 1932\, 80 min.\, 35mm). \n"In the late 1920s\, the talkies introduced a wave of all-star revues\, such as MGM's The Hollywood Revue of 1929 and Warner Bros.'s The Show of Shows (1929)\, which were inspired by the boisterous spirit of vaudeville. Paramount used this variety format as a vehicle to showcase a dazzling array of radio personalities—15 total—whose stardom was built on coast-to-coast radio programs\, record sales\, and nightclub shows. Radio was in its golden age\, and Hollywood had found ways to capitalize on its popularity. The Big Broadcast stars Bing Crosby in his first major role in a feature. The crooner had made his screen debut in Universal's King of Jazz (1930) as part of the Rhythm Boys trio. Crosby later signed with Mack Sennett\, starring in a string of successful musical comedy shorts. In The Big Broadcast\, Crosby portrays a radio heartthrob whose perennial tardiness—caused by Sharon Lynn's vampy Mona Lowe (a play on the tune 'moanin' Low')—leads a sponsor to pull the plug on the Wadx station." — Jennifer Rhee\, UCLA \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Nov-30]

They are obsessed with the planet's television programs and don't want to do much of anything. SUMMARY:Demonstration Against Racism\, Islamophobia\, and War
DESCRIPTION:Don't let the Paris attacks be used as a pretext for war and racism! Right wing politicians and their supporters\, both nationally and locally\, are whipping up a racist\, Islamophobic\, anti-immigrant hysteria. They are trying to use the tragic killings in Paris as a way to spread fear and prejudice\, and to justify violations of human rights and civil liberties for all of us. They are trying to involve the U.S. In a wider war in Syria. They would like to distract the people of the U.S from the problems of police brutality\, racism\, and growing economic inequality here at home. Let us stand together in solidarity with students and youth\, and the Black Lives Matter movement\, against institutionalized racism and police violence in our communities. We are in solidarity with immigrants and refugees from Syria\, Iraq\, Afghanistan\, and occupied Palestine; from every place ravaged by war and poverty. Say No to Criminalizing Migrants! Say No to War in Syria! \n [source: Rochester Indymedia website\, 2015-Nov-30]

SUMMARY:¡Qué Locura! (Such Craziness!) (2015-Dec-5 @ 7 p.m.)

SUMMARY:Kill Bill: Vol. I screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Kill Bill: Vol. I (Quentin Tarantino\, U.S. 2003\, 111 min.\, 35mm). \nBy the time Quentin Tarantino approached Kill Bill: Vol 1\, he had tackled and mastered the gangster and Blaxploitation genres. The Kill Bill saga combines the samurai\, kung fu\, and yakuza genres to construct a hyper-stylized modern take\, which refreshingly exchanges the tired samurai role for a fierce female assassin in a sleek yellow leather jumpsuit. Reuniting Tarantino with Uma Thurman\, who also collaborated on the story\, the film stars Thurman as the Bride\, who\, having fled life as an assassin\, is pregnant and set to marry when she is viciously attacked and sent into a coma. She wakes four years later to the realization that the only possible opportunity for a normal life has been stolen from her. She pledges to take revenge on her former colleagues and their leader\, Bill. In typical Tarantino fashion\, Kill Bill is packed to the brim with cinematic references and wild\, over-the-top violence. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Nov-30]

DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ziegfeld Follies (Vincente Minnelli\, Lemuel Ayers\, Roy Del Ruth\, Robert Lewis\, Merrill Pye\, George Sidney\, and Charles Walters\, U.S. 1946\, 110 min.\, 35mm). \nWilliam Powell\, once again as Florenz Ziegfeld\, looks down from the heavens and orchestrates a grand Technicolor musical-comedy review in the tradition of his glorious stage shows. The magnificent assemblage of MGM contract performers includes Judy Garland\, Lucille Ball\, Lena Horne\, Red Skelton\, Esther Williams\, and best of all\, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly in their only on-screen pairing until That's Entertainment in 1974. \n[source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Nov-30]
