SUMMARY:Rochester's Rich History: Rochester's Forgotten Architects
DESCRIPTION:Cynthia Howk will present a Rochester's Rich History on Rochester's Forgotten Architects in the Rundel Auditorium on the 3rd floor of the Rundel Memorial Building. \nJoin Cynthia Howk of the Landmark Society as she introduces us to several important Rochester architects and their works. While the general public usually knows of Frank Lloyd Wright and might have heard of Claude Bragdon or\, more recently\, James Johnson (Mushroom House\, Liberty Pole) — the majority of the talented designers who created Rochester's built environment over the past two centuries are almost totally unknown. These include the family dynasty of Andrew Jackson Warner and son\, J. Foster Warner\, architect/inventor/politician/philanthropist James Goold Cutler\, designer/artist/architect Harvey Ellis\, prolific father/son architects Otis and Harwood Dryer\, Mit's first woman graduate from their architecture school\, Anne Graham Rockfellow\, as well as several dozen others (both individuals and architectural firms). \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2017-Apr-10]

SUMMARY:Sacred screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Sacred (Thomas Lennon\, U.S. / Japan / France / Canada / Spain / India / Netherlands / Philippines / Russia / Poland / China / Israel / Egypt / Pakistan / Ukraine / Peru / Lebanon / Nepal / Kenya / Haiti / Saudi Arabia / Ethiopia / Myanmar / Madagascar / Sierra Leone / Botswana 2016\, 87 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nShot by more than 40 filmmaking teams around the world\, the film immerses the viewer in the daily use of faith and spiritual practice. At a time when religious hatreds dominate the world's headlines\, this film explores faith as primary human experience: how people turn to ritual and prayer to navigate the milestones and crises of private life. The film's director commissioned or sourced footage from top independent filmmakers from more than 25 countries — and a wide range of religious traditions — each team contributing a single scene. The film\, sweeping in its global reach\, yet intensely intimate\, is a tour de force that unifies these scenes into a single work\, told without narration\, without experts and\, for long stretches\, without words at all. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Apr-7]

SUMMARY:Cool Hand Luke screening (2017-Apr-16 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Cool Hand Luke (Stuart Rosenberg\, U.S. 1967\, 126 min.\, 35mm) as part of the 12 Postcards from Prison series. \nIn this film about prison life and undying spirit\, Paul Newman is Luke\, a loner sent to a chain-gang camp for "cutting heads off parking meters." For his fellow chain-gangers\, Luke offers inspiration\, whether it's digging ditches all night long or eating 50 eggs to win a bet with Oscar winner George Kennedy. First-time feature director Rosenberg's exciting staging and Conrad Hall's superb color photography make a traditional subject—life on a Southern chain gang—seem fresh\, and Newman gives one of his best "loner" roles as the title convict. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-10]

Matthew Broderick stars as a pickpocket who escapes the dungeons of the villainous Bishop of Aquila (John Wood) only to serve as a go-between of sorts to a pair of spellbound shapeshifters (Rutger Hauer\, Michelle Pfeiffer) doomed never to cross paths in human form. The film works beautifully in spite of the fact that the perfectly matched lovers never appear together on screen—or do they? \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Apr-10]

SUMMARY:On Film program: Immigration and Displacement\, "Nobel Nok Dah"\, "People\, Years\, Life\, Uomini\, anni\, vita" screenings
DESCRIPTION:UofR's On Film group will present Immigration and Displacement in the Hubbell Auditorium on the UofR Campus featuring screenings of Nobel Nok Dah (Emily Hong\, Miasarah Lai\, and Mariangela Mihai\, 2016\, 23 min.\, video)\, and People\, Years\, Life\, Uomini\, anni\, vita (Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi\, 1990\, 70 min.\, 16mm) with Nobel Nok Dah co-director Mariangela Mihai in attendance for a Q&A. \nUtilizing salvaged archival footage and first-person testimony\, these works reorient movement and proximity in transforming their visual and aural documents to access the living memories of historical experience. By resurrecting immigration stories from the distant and recent past of humanity and freedom of movement under threat\, the urgent cinematic works in this program redefine our understandings of displacement in times of ongoing crisis. \n [source: On Film website\, 2017-Apr-17]
