SUMMARY:Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool screening (2019-Oct-26 @ 3 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool (Stanley Nelson\, U.S. 2019\, 115 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nMiles Davis: Horn player\, bandleader\, innovator. Elegant\, intellectual\, vain. Callous\, conflicted\, controversial. Magnificent\, mercurial. Genius. The very embodiment of cool. The man with a sound so beautiful it could break your heart. \nThe central theme of Miles Davis's life was his restless determination to break boundaries and live life on his own terms. It made him a star—it also made him incredibly difficult to live with\, for the people who loved him most. Again and again\, in music and in life\, Miles broke with convention—and when he thought his work came to represent a new convention\, he changed it again. Miles's bold disregard for tradition\, his clarity of vision\, his relentless drive\, and constant thirst for new experiences made him an inspiring collaborator to fellow musicians and a cultural icon to generations of listeners. It made him an innovator in music—from bebop to "cool jazz\," modern quintets\, orchestral music\, jazz fusion\, rock 'n' roll\, and even hip-hop. \n\n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Michelle Wolf comic performance (2019-Oct-26 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Michelle Wolf has quickly become one of the most influential voices in the comedy landscape with the Village Voice calling her "the voice comedy needs right now" and The Daily Beast declaring\, "Michelle Wolf is the future of stand-up comedy." In 2017 Wolf debuted her first hour-long stand-up special\, "Michelle Wolf: Nice Lady"\, on HBO for which she received rave reviews and a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special. \nAs with her HBO special\, Wolf steers clear of politics in her current show; instead focusing on social commentary\, race and gender issues which she tackles through her unique comedic voice and her uncanny ability to find humor in the most unpredictable ways; often leading to boundaries being pushed to hilarious results. \n\n [source: Comedy @ the Carlson website\, 2019-Oct-21]

SUMMARY:En guerre (At War) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen En guerre (At War\, Stéphane Brizé\, France 2018\, 113 min.\, DCP\, French w/subtitles) followed by a discussion with local UAW leader Dan Maloney as part of the Labor Film Series. \nUnlike labor films that depict class struggles on the shop floor or the picket line\, At War shows the struggle waged at the bargaining table. At issue is management's decision to close an auto parts plant despite wage concessions made by the workers to keep it open. "I have lived this nightmare of greed and race-to-the-bottom economic destruction of communities in the auto industry. I give At War two thumbs up" (Dan Maloney\, Rochester UAW President). A stunning performance by Vincent Lindon (The Measure of a Man) anchors the film. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-21]

SUMMARY:Mike Doughty musical performance (2019-Oct-26 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Mike Doughty will perform his band Soul Coughing's album Ruby Vroom as part of the 25 Year Anniversary Tour at Flour City Station. \nMike Doughty\, the singer\, songwriter\, producer\, author and founder of seminal 90's band Soul Coughing will be playing their debut LP Ruby Vroom in full across the U.S. in 2019. Doughty will be joined by a full band on these special dates. While they will be performing Ruby Vroom in its entirety\, in the original sequence\, what the audience experiences will be different each night. "When I was looking for something to do between album cycles I decided to tour Irresistible Bliss in full" explains Doughty. "It was incredibly fun forcing myself to work within that structure. The decisions you make when putting together a set list are different from the ones you make when sequencing a record. This is like performing a single\, hour-long piece of music." Rather than an exact replication of the studio recording\, Doughty plans to use a variety of cues and hand signals to adjust the performance in real time. "Live we turn into a musical super- organism. We're basically doing a real-time remix of the record at each show" tells Doughty. "It won't not be a note-for-note performance. I'm very proud of the record we made; it's the sonic embodiment of lower Manhattan in the early 1990's. Yet there's a whole other version of this record that lives in my head. I'm extremely excited to see how it evolves night after night." \n [source: Flour City Station website\, 2019-Oct-21]

SUMMARY:The Great Book Robbery screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The Great Book Robbery (Gish Amit\, Rona Sela\, Netherlands 2012\, 57 min.) followed by a videoconference with producer Benny Brunner as part of the Witness Palestine series. \nThis film describes the looting of 70\,000 Palestinian books by the newly created State of Israel in 1948. When Palestinians were expelled from their homes\, part of Palestinian culture was also destroyed: furniture\, musical instruments\, carpets\, and also valuable books. \nSome books were saved and arrived at the National Library and the Hebrew University\, labeled "AP" for Abandoned Property. \nThe film interweaves various story lines into a structure that is both dramatically compelling and emotionally unsettling. The interviews center on eyewitness accounts and cultural critiques that place the book-theft affair in a larger historical-cultural context. In the process\, new light is shed on the Palestinian tragedy of 1948\, and the moralistic-heroic Israeli narrative of the 1948 war is deconstructed. \n\n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Oct-21]

SUMMARY:Gauguin a Tahiti. Il paradiso perduto (Gauguin in Tahiti: Paradise Lost) screening (2019-Oct-27 @ 3 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Gauguin a Tahiti. Il paradiso perduto (Gauguin in Tahiti: Paradise Lost\, Claudio Poli\, Italy 2019\, 88 min.) as part of the Great Art on Screen series. \nIn 1891 Gauguin left Marseille for the Pacific\, marking the beginning of a journey towards the essence of life and art\, and forging his destiny as one of the greatest modern painters who ever lived. \nGauguin in Tahiti: Paradise Lost will take us on the trail of a story that has become myth. Through Tahiti and Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia\, we will experience the landscapes that inspired Gauguin\, in the places where he built houses with bamboo and leaves\, and discovered light and colours which changed his painting forever. \n\n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Oct-21]
