SUMMARY:Our Own Worst Enemy\, Courtney Yasmineh musical performances
DESCRIPTION:Our Own Worst Enemy: \nCountry tunes from tinny Am radio percolating around in his skull appears to be the genesis of Our Own Worst Enemy. For hyperbole purposes\, we'll call it Rochester's new country super group\, debuting Saturday at Abilene Bar and Lounge\, although neither of its two co-founders is really considered a part of the country scene here. \n Courtney Yasmineh: \nAll she has ever wanted is to stand and sing for people. Her bells and whistles are her scorching lyrics and searing vocal delivery. Her vibe is older than old school and as fresh as the new world for women of all ages\, shapes\, colors. Rock Gospel. Take the medicine she administers and free your soul. Eight studio albums of original true to the heart songs that bypass all falseness\, all pretense. On electric or acoustic guitar\, with a full band or solo\, this powerful woman will rule the day. Her backstory is mythic\, escaping from an insane family situation in Chicago to the Northwoods of Minnesota where she obsessed at seventeen over the recordings of Bob Dylan in a deserted cabin\, all alone. A second escape from an early marriage to her lead guitarist. Many songs written\, sung in coffee shops and working class bars for years. One more grand escape\, leaving the man in her life who said she was too old to have a career in music and that she was making a fool of herself to try. Many albums recorded\, three children raised. With a promise on her lips and a dream in her eye since she wrote and performed her first song at a big church in Chicago when she was ten years old\, she's making good on her dream\, a dream that encompasses fifty years of the Great American Songbook\, a dream that gives hope and inspiration to all who yearn for personal freedom. Currently touring internationally\, releasing new recordings\, and writing a series of novels based on her own struggle and redemption. \n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2019-Oct-14]

SUMMARY:The Wizard of Oz screening (2019-Oct-20 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming\, U.S. 1939\, 102 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Canon series. \nIf ever a film was meant to be seen on the big screen\, this is it. Now a cultural icon\, this adaptation of L. Frank Baum's novel was one of the first films to be named to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Judy Garland gives an endearing performance as the young Dorothy Gale\, who is swept away by a tornado to the Land of Oz. A triumph of costumes\, makeup\, and set design\, and featuring Harold Arlen's Oscar-winning song "Over the Rainbow\," this film captures the fear\, imagination\, and wonder of childhood in fantastic Technicolor. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-14]

SUMMARY:Firefighters Under Occupation screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Firefighters Under Occupation (Ciaran Gibbons\, Palestine / Israel 2017\, 70 min.) followed by a discussion with filmmaker Ciaran Gibbons\, and film subject Jim Malone as part of the Witness Palestine series. \nIn 2015\, Welsh filmmaker and firefighter Ciaran Gibbons traveled to Palestine and discussed the challenges of fighting fires in Nablus\, Ramallah\, Hebron\, and Jerusalem. His film documents the lives and work of the Palestinian firefighters who work in the occupied West Bank. An inherently dangerous job in any country\, those tasked with firefighting in Palestine face two challenges: fire and the Israeli Occupation Forces. \nThis film documents humanitarian support given to Palestinian firefighters by The Fire Brigade Union of the U.K. as well as facilitation of training in Scotland. It presents the upsurge of violence in the country through interviews and meetings with Palestinian firefighters and their families\, and offers their perspectives on occupation\, struggle\, fear and hope\, celebrating their bravery and dedication. \n\n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Oct-14]

SUMMARY:Spirits of the Past Theatrical Tours (2019-Oct-20 @ 5 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:This year's theme is vampires. The village is overrun with vampires of all types and from every corner of the world. Each scene depicts a different folklore story or a dramatic retelling of a real event! Vampire hunts\, the dark arts\, an insane asylum and more await you at this year's Spirits of the Past! \nThis special evening program is different from a typical visit to the museum. Using the Historic Village as its canvas\, costumed tour guides will lead guests by candlelight through the darker recesses of the village. You'll experience original tales adapted from historical accounts and folklore\, and re-discover eerie literary classics that held Western New York in suspense some 150 years ago. This year the Museum is overrun with vampires of all types as depicted in eight theatrical vignettes. \n\n [source: Genesee Country Village and Museum website\, 2019-Oct-14]

SUMMARY:Africantic by UNIVERSES theatrical performance
DESCRIPTION:Geva will host a performance of Africantic by UNIVERSES as part of The Festival of New Theatre. \nAn audiovisual immersive theatrical experience by UNIVERSES\, one of the nation's premiere theatre ensembles. Africantic identifies\, maps\, deconstructs and reconstructs the musical DNA chains that bind us. From the complexities of spiritual ancestral rhythms and chant\, across the middle passage into the Americas (where African deities entangle\, to this day\, in a delicate and vicious dance with Catholic Saints)\, from work songs and field hollers all the way to today's music\, Africantic explores the importance of music and the social movements that have shaped us. SUMMARY:That 1 Guy musical performance (2019-Oct-20 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Babeville will host beat-charged\, experimental extravaganza\, one-man-band <!– 2010-Mar-7: Castaways (Ithaca)-excellent performance with an unclassifiable sound that's related to jam bands\, hip-hop\, rock\, synth-pop\, and novelty acts\, also 2003-Apr-17 Bug Jar-He plays a "magic pipe" which is a custom-built instrument made of drain pipe. It's got a high-note string on one side and a bass string on another. It also has mini drum pads hooked into his sequencer for various effects. His music is a beat-charged experimental extravaganza. I decided that there must be dozens of reasons to see a show: \n\nlike to see Dr. Seuss creations brought to life (according to him\, "apocalyptic Seuss.") \nlove duct tape \nwant to see how to do the one-man-band thing right \nyou've got a thing for the user interfaces on Kai's Power Tools and want to see it built in real-life \nlove of the Rube Goldberg machine \nlike the look of plumbing in a demolished building \nlike to say\, "I saw That 1 Guy and his magic pipe." \n\n –>That1Guy. \nWith an extensive and amazing track record of unique and imaginative performances featuring his curious instrument and copious amounts of originality\, Mike Silverman\, a/k/a That1Guy\, has set himself apart as a true one-of-a-kind talent that rivals any other artist currently in the entertainment industry. Averaging 150-200 shows a year all over North America and Canada\, he has been a consistent favorite at such festivals as: Wakarusa\, Electric Forest\, Big Day out\, All Good Music Festival\, Bella\, High Sierra Music Festival\, Summer Meltdown\, Montreal Jazz Festival\, and many more. He was also the 'tap Water Award' winner at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for best musical act. His legendary collaboration and multiple tours with Buckethead performing as The Frankenstein Brothers has further cemented his virtuoso story as a creative visionary. \n [source: Babeville website\, 2019-Oct-14]

SUMMARY:Soufra screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Soufra (Thomas A. Morgan\, U.S. / Lebanon 2017\, 73 min.) followed by a Videoconference Discussion with director Thomas Morgan as part of the Witness Palestine series. \nWe hope you'll agree that this film has quite a different flavor. From the director's statement\, "Delicious food\, an inspiring entrepreneur\, a true underdog pursuing a seemingly impossible goal\, and learning to drive for the first time at age 42? These\, I believe\, are the ingredients of a great story." Soufra focuses on Mariam Shaar\, whose family took refuge in Lebanon from 1948 Palestine. Job opportunities for refugees are sparse; she decided to start a food-truck business in Beirut. She founded the titular company; "Soufra" means a big fancy table\, she said. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Oct-14]

SUMMARY:Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool screening (2019-Oct-22 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool (Stanley Nelson\, U.S. 2019\, 115 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nMiles Davis: Horn player\, bandleader\, innovator. Elegant\, intellectual\, vain. Callous\, conflicted\, controversial. Magnificent\, mercurial. Genius. The very embodiment of cool. The man with a sound so beautiful it could break your heart. \nThe central theme of Miles Davis's life was his restless determination to break boundaries and live life on his own terms. It made him a star—it also made him incredibly difficult to live with\, for the people who loved him most. Again and again\, in music and in life\, Miles broke with convention—and when he thought his work came to represent a new convention\, he changed it again. Miles's bold disregard for tradition\, his clarity of vision\, his relentless drive\, and constant thirst for new experiences made him an inspiring collaborator to fellow musicians and a cultural icon to generations of listeners. It made him an innovator in music—from bebop to "cool jazz\," modern quintets\, orchestral music\, jazz fusion\, rock 'n' roll\, and even hip-hop. \n\n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Silent Documentaries Program screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will host a Silent Documentaries Program with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli featuring \n\nLas Hurdes (Luis Buñuel\, Spain 1933\, 30 min.)\nÀ propos de Nice (Boris Kaufman\, Jean Vigo\, France 1930\, 25 min.)\nBerliner Stilleben (László Moholy-Nagy\, Germany 1926\, 9 min.)\nManhatta (Charles Sheeler\, Paul Strand\, U.S. 1921\, 11 min.)\n\nWhile the earliest films were simple shots of real life as it happened\, bringing images of faraway places and actions to the masses\, the term "documentary" was not coined until 1926. Early forms of this new genre often used staged or re-created action to propel the narrative and reflect the director's vision. This program explores the elusive nature of documentary films in the silent period\, including a surrealist look at a remote region of Spain\, an atypical travelogue of the southern coast of France\, and two city symphonies\, one of Berlin and one of New York City. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-14]
