SUMMARY:Monty Python and the Holy Grail screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Terry Gilliam\, Terry Jones\, U.K. 1975\, 91 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Monty Python at 50 series. \nIn 1975\, British comedy troupe Monty Python created what must surely be regarded as one of the funniest and strangest movies ever made. The mere mention of its title can send large groups of people into paroxysms of laughter and endless quoting of dialogue. Its relentless gallows humor and surreal imagery managed to spoof just about everything in existence\, including history\, mythology\, gender\, class\, and even movies themselves. But perhaps the best and only way to describe it would be to quote the tagline from the movie's release poster: "And now! At last! Another film completely different from some of the other films which aren't quite the same as this one is." \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jun-3]

SUMMARY:The Americanization of Emily screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Americanization of Emily (Arthur Hiller\, U.S. 1964\, 115 min.\, 35mm) as part of the D-Day series. \nThis controversial wartime black comedy finds James Garner as a "dog robber" assigned to the U.S. Navy in the weeks leading up to D-Day. His job is to keep his ranking officers supplied with women and luxury goods. When a questionably motivated admiral\, obsessed with how the army and air force are overshadowing the navy in the war\, decides that the first man killed on Omaha Beach must be a sailor\, he assigns Garner to film the event and bring back the proof. The script by Paddy Chayefsky (Marty\, Network) skewers the business of war\, leading both Garner and co-star Julie Andrews to note it as the best film they were involved in. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jun-10]

SUMMARY:Sprinter screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Sprinter (Storm Saulter\, U.S. / Jamacia 2018\, 114 min.) followed by a Panel Discussion with Dr. Joel L. Frater\, and Karen Bailey Turner as part of the The Black Cinema Series. \nSprinter tells the story of Akeem Sharp (Dale Elliott)\, who is set to be Jamaica's next big track-and-field sensation. Akeem hopes a rise in the track and field world will take him to the U.S. to reunite him with his mother (Lorrain Toussaint\, Orange is the New Black)\, who has supported the family while living as an illegal resident for over a decade. But Akeem's rising star is weighed down by turmoil at home: a volatile father\, and an unruly older brother who insinuates himself into Akeem's career as a means of escaping — or perhaps enhancing — his scam artist hustle. Not only does Akeem have to prove to himself and everyone that he can succeed\, but also overcome the struggles that may ultimately bring him down. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2019-Jun-10]

SUMMARY:Se rokh (3 Faces) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Se rokh (3 Faces\, Jafar Panahi\, Iran 2018\, 100 min.\, DCP\, Persian and Azerbaijani w/subtitles). \n3 Faces is Jafar Panahi's fourth completed feature since he was officially banned from filmmaking by the Iranian government in 2010—and it is one of his very best. He begins with a smartphone video shot by a young woman (Marziyeh Rezaei) who announces to the camera that her parents have forbidden her from realizing her dream of acting and then\, by all appearances\, takes her own life. The recipient of the video\, Behnaz Jafari (as herself) asks Panahi (as himself) to drive her to the woman's tiny village near the Turkish border to investigate. From there\, 3 Faces builds in narrative\, thematic\, and visual intricacy to put forth a grand expression of community and solidarity under the eye of oppression. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jun-10]

SUMMARY:William Russell Wallace\, Declan Ryan musical performances
DESCRIPTION:William Russell Wallace spent a decade on the road with several bands before taking a break to get his MFA in Fiction from the University of Montana. His new record\, Dirty Soul\, is a raw collection of songs about redemption in the face of self-destruction and addiction. His fiction can be found in Yemassee (winner of the 2018 Yemassee Prize in Fiction)\, Breakwater Review (runner-up in the 2019 Fiction Contest)\, Carve\, and elsewhere. He currently lives in Idyllwild\, CA\, and is touring in a trio that can \nTo the Rochester music scene\, Declan Ryan is a fifteen-year recidivist. After a wild youth that included barnstorming DIY tours\, the infamous Instant Album series\, and a stint building violins in Spain\, he's settled into his wheelhouse as a craftsman and storyteller. DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will present a special Curator's Choice screening Sátántangó (Satantango\, Béla Tarr\, Hungary 1994\, 432 min.\, 35mm\, Hungarian w/subtitles)\, and La Flamme (Ron Dyens\, France 2001\, 2 min.\, 35mm). \nAt the end of his 22 years of (non-consecutive) tenure at the museum\, Senior Curator Paolo Cherchi Usai has achieved a long-cherished dream: showing one of the longest cinematic masterpieces ever made\, alongside one of the shortest\, La Flamme\, in one program. Satantango is ranked among the fifty greatest films of all time (2012 Sight and Sound critics' poll). Susan Sontag wrote that she would be "glad to see it every year for the rest of [her] life." SUMMARY:Doug MacLeod musical performance (2019-Jun-15 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Doug MacLeod\, a prolific singer\, songwriter\, engaging storyteller\, and masterful guitarist was born in the blues and is rooted in the American tradition. MacLeod is a perennial Blues Music Award nominee and multiple Blues Music Award winner. He recently won the 2016 Blues Music Award for Acoustic Artist Of The Year and the Blues Blast Music Award for Male Artist Of The Year. \nHe is a traveling artist who writes and sings original songs that are based on his own life and experiences. He learned from the old masters\, lived the music\, and carries forward a valuable tradition. MacLeod is known for his superb songwriting\, guitar wizardry\, warm soulful vocals\, wit and unforgettable live performances. At the heart of a Doug MacLeod performance is his knack for storytelling\, bringing characters-from the faceless to the legendary-to strikingly real life. \nAs a youth Doug overcame abuse and a crippling stutter by turning to music. After picking up a guitar\, and singing — he found his voice. While he developed his rich\, soulful singing style MacLeod also worked out a unique\, unorthodox and powerfully rhythmic acoustic guitar style. The rage of a turbulent youth was eventually channeled through the guitar. Doug uses a relentless right hand to pound out an insistent\, churning beat to complement his intricate bottleneck and finger-style technique. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2019-Jun-10]
