SUMMARY:I\, Daniel Blake screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen I\, Daniel Blake (Ken Loach\, U.K. / France / Belgium 2016\, 100 min.\, DCP) as part of the Labor Film Series. \nWinner of the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival\, Ken Loach's latest film is a gripping human tale about the impact one man can make. Daniel Blake (Dave Johns)\, a gruff but goodhearted widowed woodworker\, lives by his own common-sense moral code. But after a heart attack leaves him unable to work and the state welfare system fails him\, the stubbornly self-reliant Daniel must stand up and fight for his dignity. He leads a one-man crusade for compassion that will transform not only his life\, but also the lives of a struggling single mother (Hayley Squires) and her two children. I\, Daniel Blake is a moving\, much-needed reminder of the power of empathy from one of the world's greatest living filmmakers. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Sep-17]

SUMMARY:Looking for Frederick Douglass: Resources in Libraries\, Museums\, and Archives
DESCRIPTION:Frederick Douglass was a highly visible public figure\, a popular orator\, and a prolific writer and memoirist; he has also been called "the 19th century's most photographed American." Two hundred years after his birth\, however\, locating and bringing together dispersed documentary records of Douglass's life can be a challenge. While the circumstances of his life and legacy certainly play a role\, this elusiveness may have as much to do with the variety of institutions that hold such materials and the differing standards and practices among libraries\, museums\, and archives. The Eastman Museum will host a conversation about these challenges. The panelists are Jessica Lacher-Feldman\, assistant dean\, Special Collections and Preservation\, University of Rochester; Jennifer Morris\, archivist\, Anacostia Community Museum\, Washington\, Dc; and Heather Shannon\, associate curator\, Department of Photography\, George Eastman Museum. Ken Fox\, head of library and archives\, Eastman Museum\, will moderate. Join us as we set out to find Frederick Douglass. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Sep-17]

SUMMARY:Gentleman's Agreement screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Gentleman's Agreement (Elia Kazan\, U.S. 1947\, 118 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Reinventing Hollywood series. \nGregory Peck stars as Philip Green\, a journalist transplanted from California to New York assigned a series for his new magazine on the subject of anti-Semitism. He struggles with how to approach the topic until he decides to pass himself off as Jewish. While very few people know about the ruse (the 1940s technique of "restricted knowledge")\, Philip goes about his everyday life\, including career and romance\, while suffering prejudices and ultimately discovering that the issue is much larger than a magazine article. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Sep-17]

SUMMARY:The Human Comedy screening (2018-Sep-24 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Human Comedy (Clarence Brown\, U.S. 1943\, 117 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Senior Matinee series. \nMultiple protagonists tell the home-front story of the small town of Ithaca\, California. Homer MacAuley (Mickey Rooney) takes a night job as a telegraph messenger to help his mother make ends meet while his older brother is off to war. This puts Homer in contact with many others in the town\, including his brother and sister (Van Johnson\, Donna Reed)\, the young lovers Tom and Diana (James Craig\, Marsha Hunt)\, and wire chief Willie Grogan (Frank Morgan). Life in all its possibilities plays out against this backdrop of the average American town. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Sep-17]

SUMMARY:Americans United Informal Chat
DESCRIPTION:Some weeks ago\, we had invited local members and friends of Americans United for Separation of Church and State to an informal chat session to discuss issues related to church-state separation. This event drew a small group and a lively and vigorous discussion ensued. The current situation regarding Supreme Court nominations has raised serious questions about the way in which Jefferson's "wall of separation"" is under threat\,and we look forward to learning how local folks are seeing and reacting to this development. So\, another such informal chat session has been scheduled for Monday September 24\, 2018 at the Starbucks Coffee Shop at the Barnes and Nobles Bookstore in Pittsford Plaza and I am writing to invite you to join us there. Members of the Board of the Rochester Americans United Chapter are interested to hear what matters are of concern to our friends and neighbors\, and to gather ideas for future Chapter programming. \n [source: Americans United e-mail\, 2018-Sep-15]

SUMMARY:Die Stadt ohne Juden (The City Without Jews) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Die Stadt ohne Juden (The City Without Jews\, H. K. Breslauer\, Austria 1924\, 80 min.\, DCP) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nLost for more than ninety years\, the original version of this title was found at a Parisian flea market in 2015. Meticulously restored by the Austrian Film Archive\, and thanks to the largest crowdfunding campaign in Austria's history\, the film can once again see the light of day. Based on the dystopian 1922 novel by Hugo Bettauer\, the story contemplates a city that has identified its Jewish population as the root of its problems and expels them from its borders. Although the (non-Jewish) citizens are initially happy with this act\, the city falters and the decision is reversed. Prophetic in its content and in its imagery\, the film presaged nationalist anti-Semitism and made the argument that exclusion of a defined group of citizens weakens the community. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Sep-17]
