SUMMARY:Rochester's Rich History Series\, Frederick Douglass and Ireland lecture
DESCRIPTION:In the Rundel Auditorium of the Rundel Library Building is a Rochester's Rich History Series lecture titled Frederick Douglass and Ireland by Tim Madigan. \nIn 1845 Frederick Douglass was invited by leaders of the worldwide abolitionist movement to come to Ireland\, where he spent months visiting such cities as Dublin\, Cork\, Waterford\, and Belfast and befriending orator and political leader Daniel O'connell. During his time in Ireland\, Douglass came to feel for the first time that he was truly accepted as a human being. Douglass remains a powerful figure for reconciliation in modern-day Ireland and Northern Ireland\, with plaques commemorating him in Cork and Waterford\, murals honoring him in Belfast\, and a statue of him in Dublin. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2016-Feb-15]

SUMMARY:Chi-Raq screening (2016-Feb-20 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Chi-Raq (Spike Lee\, U.S. 2015\, 127 min.) as part of the Black History Month Film Series 2016. \nBeautiful Lysistrata (Teyonah Parris) is in love with aspiring Rapper Demtrius "Chi-Raq" Dupree (Nick Cannon)\, but she is disturbed by the bloody war between his Spartan gang and the rival Trojans\, led by Cyclops (Wesley Snipes). After Trojans set fire to her apartment while she's in bed with Chi-Raq\, Lysistrata moves in with her neighbor Miss Helen (Angela Bassett)\, a book-loving Peace activist who lost her daughter years before to a stray bullet. Shaken by an unexpected death and desperate to do something to stop the escalating bloodshed\, Lysistrata persuades Spartan and Trojan women to swear off sex with their men until the fighting stops. To draw more attention to their cause\, she leads the women in a bold occupation of a local armory\, inspiring women across the city—and eventually the world—to join the boycott. As the ultimate battle of the sexes rages on\, the city's fate hangs in the balance in this searing satire of gun violence in America. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Feb-17]

SUMMARY:The Designated Mourner by Wallace Shawn theatrical performance (2016-Feb-20 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of The Designated Mourner by Wallace Shawn. \n"The designated mourner. I am the designated mourner. I have to tell you that a very special little world has died\, and I am the designated mourner"\, Jack says to start this show. Jack and Judy and Howard tell the stories of the lives of Jack and Judy and Howard\, and the unnamed country in which they try to live. The tales cover decades. Jack and Judy and Howard change (and stay the same)\, and the country changes (and stays the same). It is a country of unstable stability\, of precarious lives\, and the narratives reflect this. SUMMARY:Films from the Early Avant-Garde
DESCRIPTION:VSW will screen Films from the Early Avant-Garde (projected from 16mm film) including Rhythmus 21 (Hans Richter\, Germany 1923\, 3 min.)\, Symphonie Diagonale (Viking Eggeling\, Germany 1924\, 5 min.)\, Entr'acte (René Clair\, France 1924\, 22 min.)\, Anemic Cinema (Marcel Duchamp\, Man Ray\, France 1926\, 7 min.)\, Un Chien Andalou (Luis Buñuel\, France 1929\, 16 min.)\, and Le sang d'un poète (The Blood of a Poet\, Jean Cocteau\, France 1932\, 55 min.) \nThe VSW Film Series will present a screening of seminal avant garde films from the 1920's and 1930's. This program includes historically significant films by European artists working between world wars\, who were struggling against the restrictions of classical art to re-define the role of the artist in modern society. Dada and Surrealist artists in particular began using the "new" form of cinema to experiment visually and sonically\, and in doing so pushed filmmaking far beyond traditional narrative boundaries\, cutting a new edge in artistic discourse. The titles in this program present a selection of influential films made by artists working at the front lines of cinema. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-Feb-15]

SUMMARY:A Star Is Born\, Hold Me While I'm Naked screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Hold Me While I'm Naked (George Kuchar\, U.S. 1966\, 15 min\, 16mm) followed by A Star is Born (George Cukor\, U.S. 1954\, 154 min.\, 35mm). On the former: \n"This film could cheer an arthritic gorilla\, and audiences\, apparently sensitized by its blithely accurate representation of feelings few among them can have escaped\, rise from their general stupor to cheer it back." — James Stoller (The Village Voice) \n On the latter: \nJudy Garland offers her finest performance as a resplendent ingenue and aspiring actress who marries a hard-drinking leading man (James Mason). As her career takes off\, his plummets to the ground. Filled with songs of joy and yearning penned by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin\, the movie is the most brilliant of all of George Cukor's films about theater and show business. Amid the glamour\, Cukor's piercing comments on Hollywood hit their targets with the bang of Judy's high notes. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Feb-15]

SUMMARY:Daguerreotypes screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Daguerreotypes (Agnès Varda\, France 1976\, 80 min.\, DCP\, French w/subtitles). \nDaguerreotypes is a stunningly intimate portrait of the shopkeepers and small shops of the rue Daguerre\, a picturesque Parisian street\, where Varda has lived and worked for more than fifty years. The title\, Daguerreotypes\, references both the name of her street and early photographic portraits\, which she evokes in poetically documenting her neighbors. Through this intimate and local lens\, Varda reveals a larger world in the process of transformation\, creating a portrait of a city and ways of life that no longer exist. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Feb-15]

SUMMARY:The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution screening (2016-Feb-22 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (Stanley Nelson\, U.S. 2015\, 113 min.) as part of the Black History Month Film Series 2016\, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Nate Brown\, Jr. \nChange was coming to America and the fault lines could no longer be ignored— cities were burning\, Vietnam was exploding\, and disputes raged over equality and civil rights. A new revolutionary culture was emerging and it sought to drastically transform the system. The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense would\, for a short time\, put itself at the vanguard of that change. The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party\, its significance to the broader American culture\, its cultural and political awakening for black people\, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source\, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police\, FBI informants\, journalists\, white supporters and detractors\, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it. Featuring Kathleen Cleaver\, Jamal Joseph\, and many others\, The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution is an essential history and a vibrant chronicle of this pivotal movement that birthed a new revolutionary culture in America. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Feb-17]

SUMMARY:The Women\, A Reason to Live screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Reason to Live (George Kuchar\, U.S. 1976\, 30 min.\, 16mm) followed by The Women (George Cukor\, U.S. 1933\, 127 min.\, 35mm). On the former: \n"This film is about depression\, although it's not that depressing. I suppose it has a message of faith and hope in it . . . it does for me. . . . But then again my interest may not match yours. It was shot in San Francisco and in Central Oklahoma with a cast of one man and four women. Crushing emotions are indulged in against a massive meteorological background that brings inspiration and terror to the characters involved." — George Kuchar \n On the latter: \nMary Haines's (Norma Shearer) spiteful friends can't contain their glee when her husband has an affair with scheming shop girl Crystal Allen (Joan Crawford). But a hasty Reno divorce fueled by gossip only makes matters worse. Can Mary forget her pride and forgive her man? Crawford is at her sharp-tongued best in this drama adapted from the Clare Booth Luce play. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Feb-15]

SUMMARY:Sans toit ni loi (Vagabond) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sans toit ni loi (Vagabond\, Agnès Varda\, France 1985\, 105 min.\, 35mm\, French and Arabic w/subtitles). \nFound in a ditch\, having frozen to death\, Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire) is resurrected through the memories of the people she encountered in the weeks beforehand\, mostly portrayed by non-actors. Narrative and documentary elements are woven together to construct an incomplete portrait of the enigmatic young vagabond. With height\, weight\, and eye color recorded\, significant moments remain undocumented or unknown and we are left without a hint as to her inner thoughts and feelings. Wandering across the cold\, bleak countryside and relying on the kindness of strangers\, Mona is unable to make any genuine connections. Existing only in the consciousness of others\, she becomes what each person requires of her. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Feb-15]
